21、 Being lonely in the crowd might seem ridiculous. But according to a recent survey, the situation is all too common. Loneliness and other anxiety problems — worrying about life’s pressures — can even lead to self-murder.
An article in China Daily gave no reason for this other than the usual blame on the post-80s generation. According to a high-level official, young people suffering from discouragement are mostly spoiled (宠坏的) and have not been taught to be independent, responsible and express a “thank-you”. Well, how do you like that? First, I don’t think China’s youth are exactly spoiled. They certainly have more things than their parents did, but a lot of money spent on them is for their education including various extra classes.
Discouragement and anxiety are now the fastest growing challenges in modern society. We sense a lack of close friends who we can talk to honestly and openly. In 1985, a US study found that one in ten people did not have such a friend. In 2006, it was one in four. It’s easy to see the connection between loneliness and discouragement. But what actually causes this increasing loneliness?
Surely, with Internet social networking sites we have more friends than ever. But a new study has shown that the more time teenagers spend in front of computers, the less close they are to friends and family. WeChat or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world.
And then there are those endless online games popular with young Chinese but increasingly there are more interesting choices. For example, new sports such as skateboarding are catching on (流行起来) in bigger cities, as is playing music in a band. These creative hobbies are done in a group and thus friendship can be stronger. Hopefully young people will also be drawn out of the Internet cafes and interactive (互动的) computer games that in fact fail to recreate a real interactive experience.
【1】It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that _________.
A.it’s now more difficult for people to find close friends to have an honest chat with
B.parents focus mostly on children’s education rather than the personality building
C.young people have no idea of expressing appreciation because of being spoiled
D.teenagers will recreate a real interactive experience to strengthen friendships
【2】What does the writer think of the Internet social networking sites?
A.Open but ridiculous.
B.Honest and responsible.
C.Real and fun.
D.Interesting but meaningless.
【3】According to the passage, which of the following can help us avoid being lonely in the crowd?
A.To stay long in Internet cafes.
B.To focus on extra courses.
C.To give up our own hobbies.
D.To play music in a band.
22、 It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
“Any old paper, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet scandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front door struck me. I looked in. the girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Mercy, no!”
I looked at my shabby slipcover (家具套). The girl put her cup back in its sauce carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucer.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They didn’t said “Thank you”. They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof covered over our heads, my man with a good, steady job—these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small scandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a whole, I thought, just in case I should begin to feel how rich I am.
【1】Why did the writer let the children in?:
A.She showed great pity on them. B.She had old papers to sell.
C.She knew them and wanted to make them a cup of coca. D.She wanted to invite them to her Thanksgiving party.
【2】The girl thought the writer was rich perhaps in that _______.
A.she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable.
B.she saw the cups matches the saucers.
C.the writer’s slipcovers were very new.
D.the boy thought so
【3】From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on _____.
A.how much money you have had B.how you feel about your life

A.show her husband that someone had come
B.remind her that she had helped two children
C.show that she was a kind-hearted woman
D.remind her how rich she was
23、I am lucky enough to live in a house that has a walled garden. In fact, this was one of the main features which encouraged us to buy this house. 【1】. Apple, plum, and cherry trees are growing well here. Since we moved in, we have been turning this area into a richer forest garden.
【2】. Walled gardens can be created from the very beginning using recyclable materials. They can also be created in old industrial or agricultural spots, where the roofs of houses are no longer in good repair. In fact, our walled garden was made from an old cattle shelter.
I live in an area where temperatures can fall as low as around -5℃. However, the garden warms more quickly in spring and cools more slowly in autumn. 【3】. Plants benefit from the protected microclimate in the garden all year round. I find I can successfully grow several plants that would not usually grow well outdoors.
Stone walls can provide a quieter space than other gardens centred by fences. We live in the countryside but are near a busy road. Enter this garden, however, and we might be in a different world protected from traffic noise and other outside distractions. 【4】.
Finally, it is also worth considering that when a garden is centred by walls, it provides a range of choices for vertical (垂直的) growing. 【5】. Fruit trees can be trained to grow up the walls to make the most of the space. There are plants to choose from for each wall of a walled garden, each of which offers different conditions.
A.People are likely to live in a warmer place.
B.The stone walls help in temperature regulation.
C.Such kind of places can make excellent walled gardens.
D.Climbers and small plants can find their places along the edges.
E.The stone walls of this garden protects a collection of fruit trees.
F.There may be arguments about where to create walled gardens.
G.This wall can turn the garden into a quiet heaven.
24、 British historian Jacob Bronowski once wrote, “Man masters nature not by force, but by understanding.” This is especially for extreme climber Alex Honnold, who climbed California's El Capitan by himself, without any safety ropes(绳子), in 2017. The New York Times called it“one of the greatest athletic feats(功绩)of any kind, ever.”
Now you can watch him do it. The documentary Free Solo, which hit Chinese mainland cinemas on Sept 6, shows Honnold’s brave journey up the 914-meter high mountain. The film won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in February. In it, Honnold gives us some useful advice:“You’ll always feel fear, but over time you’ll realize the only way to truly manage your fear is to broaden your comfort zone. It means that challenging yourself is important.”
In fact, free climbing requires perseverance, control, and concentration. “I’m not thinking about anything when I’m climbing,” Honnold said, “I’m focused on doing what’s in front of me.” This strong focus on the present is a sort of meditation (冥想) that we can use in our daily routines.
While the documentary seemingly praises extreme athletes for pushing the limits of human potential, some are concerned about Honnold risking his own life. “His deed puts great stress on his loved ones, even when he succeeds,” Climbing Magazine noted.
Free Solo seems to say that with enough courage and dedication, one can achieve any goal. However, the movie may also be viewed as the disturbing story of a climber who went against all better judgment and got away with it.
