21、From July to October every year, about a quarter of the world’s blue whales feed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. But the whales currently face a major threat in their favorite feeding area. Ships carrying cargo (货物)sail in the same area at the same time. All too often, the whales’ paths and the ships’ travel lines overlap (重叠),and a ship will hit a whale.
According to a new study, these ship strikes have become a serious threat to the overall population of the world’s blue whales. Only about 10,000 of the creatures still exist worldwide. Blue whales are the largest known animals ever to live on Earth. Even so, if hit by a container ship, a blue whale will likely die from its injuries.
In 2007 alone, large ships killed five blue whales in the waters off San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that because there are so few whales already, losing three to five from the California whale population every year is a significant loss. “The estimated population of blue whales in this part of the Pacific is 2,500”, says Sean Hastings, a NOAA analyst. “So every whale counts toward this species moving off the endangered-species list.”
Now, marine scientists must figure out how to protect the whales from the giant container ships. One very simple program is already under way in the Santa Barbara Channel, a waterway that separates mainland California from the nearby Channel Islands.
The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has asked large container ships passing through the area to voluntarily slow down. Sailing slower will allow the ships’ crew (船员)more time to change course before hitting a whale.
Several of the world’s largest shipping lines are set to participate in the new program. For every ship that passes through the Santa Barbara Channel at or below the reduced speed of 12 knots (海里 / 小时),the company that owns the ship will be paid $2,500.
【1】From Paragraph 1, we can know that_____.
A. people intend to illegally hunt blue whales for money
B. large ships often carrying goods may pollute the sea
C. there is fewer fish in blue whales’ favorite feeding area
D. the container ships may hit the blue whales frequently
【2】Why is the death of several whales regarded as significant loss to the world's blue whales?
A. Because other blue whales will be scared away.
B. Because the number of the blue whales is so small.
C. Because blue whales are the largest animals in the world.
D. Because many blue whales get killed throughout the year.
【3】According to Sean Hastings,it’s inferred that .
A. the blue whales are still on the endangered-species list.
B. the number of the blue whales is decreasing sharply.
C. most of the world’s blue whales live in the Pacific Ocean.

23、Time is running out for the 30-second TV commercial
The 30-second television commercial was once a cultural icon. Unfortunately, it has lost that status. TV commercials are destined for history museums, along with cassette players and dial-up telephones.
TV commercials had their golden era in the 1960s. People had lots of time, particularly after work. There were no emails, text messages or social networks to follow. TV was limited to a handful of stations that only broadcast during certain times of the day.
Commercials were part of the TV experience. They offered a window into the new world of packaged goods, automobiles and airline travel. Thanks to TV commercials, people could learn about these products without having to get up from the sofa.
That’s not the case anymore. For today’s internet-enabled consumers, TV commercials are probably the least efficient way to learn about a product. They are 30 seconds of sell (推销), while all we really want to do is sit back and watch our show.
Time-shifting — the ability to fast forward and rewind (倒回) — has made it possible for us to make watching TV just one more scheduled activity in our already packed diaries. It’s not that we don’t want to hear from brands. It’s just that we don’t want to hear from them during the time we have set aside to watch TV. A study last year showed that 84 percent of respondents wanted to fast forward through the ads they watched. More than 60 percent of them, meanwhile, downloaded shows so that they could skip commercials.
Hence the concept of “interruptive advertising.” People don’t want to be interrupted by advertising. They only want to engage with it when they are in consumer mode and thus in the proper mood for a brand’s message.
So, are TV commercials dead already? What sort of brand message is appropriate today? The answer isn’t yet clear, but pre-roll (片前的) ads may be part of the solution. People are less likely to consider such ads annoying since they start to roll before the viewer has a chance to engage with the show. It might be followed up by a page on the show’s website, with links that allow the viewer to connect more deeply with the brand.
【1】According to the author, television commercials are outdated because ______.
①people’s attention is taken by many things
②there are alternative ways of promoting products
③there are all kinds of information on the internet
④time-shifting has made it possible for us to skip TV commercials

D.People will feel annoyed when they watch interruptive television ads.
【3】According to the article, people’s attitude towards pre-roll ads is more ______.
A.Critical B.supportive
C.casual D.conservative
24、At Englands University of Plymouth, Professor Eduardo Miranda has been programming pairs of robots to compose music. Miranda's robots have simple “ vocal cords”(声带)and are programmed to sing and to listen to each other. The robots' unique warbling sounds (颤音) do not perfectly match the human voice, but each machine is exactly sharing music with the other in a new and unique way.
Each robot is equipped with speakers, software that mimics the human voice, a mouth that opens as it “sings,” a microphone for ears, and a camera for eyes. The robots also move. Miranda hopes that by studying his robot vocalists, he can discover something about how and why humans create, perform, and listen to music.
When the robots sing, first one robot makes six random sounds. Its partner responds with more sounds. The first robot analyzes the sounds to see if their sequences (序列)) are similar. If they are, it nods its head and commits the sounds to memory, and the second robot notices and “memorizes” the musical sequence, too. If the first robot thinks the sounds are too different, it shakes its head and both robots ignore the sounds. Then the process continues.
Miranda set up an experiment in which he left the two robots alone in his study for two weeks. When he returned, his little warblers had, by imitating each other, not only shared notes but combined them. The product of their cooperation was far from symphonic, but the robots had begun to combine the notes into their own self-developed “songs”.
With the help of his warbling robots, one of Miranda's goals is to create music that no human would ever compose. Miranda believes the robots are ideal for this purpose because they would not be influenced by any existing musical styles or rules.
【1】Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “mimics” in Paragraph 2?
A.Substitutes.
B.Interrupts.

A.Sing as well as humans do.
B.Create new styles of music.
C.Memorize a variety of music.
D.Promote traditional musical forms.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Future robots.
B.Special songs.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was cast as Hamlet in a traveling production of Hamlet in 2016. I was very nervous —Hamlet has an awful lot of lines. I was 24 at the time, and having a leading role was a big deal.
We performed the show for six weeks in a Dublin theatre. Then we moved to Cork, the second largest city in Ireland. Time was tight, and that meant we didn’t get to finish our rehearsal(排练) before the opening night. It was going to be a full house: about 750 people.
The show went smoothly until the fifth act, when it was time to perform the swordfight between Laertes and Hamlet. We weren’t using prop swords(道具剑). Instead, they were solid steel. The stage in Cork was smaller than we were used to, and the actor playing Laertes and I got too close. We were exhausted —we had been talking nonstop for two and a half hours on the stage.
In the fight, Laertes is carrying a poison-tipped sword designed to kill Hamlet. But as the actor playing Lacrtes made the gesture, his sword stabbed(刺伤)my face. I felt a pain in my brain and fell to the floor. All the actors rushed on the stage. The audience thought it was part of the play, and as the curtains went down, they gave us a round of applause.
I was taken to hospital in an ambulance. I couldn’t speak clearly and had no balance, but the doctors said, “You seem fine. You’re probably in shock. ” I went home and was sick all night. My parents took me back to hospital the next day, as my speech and balance were still not right.
