21、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.

Seeking feedback not always sufficient for stimulating creativity

It is widely believed that seeking feedback from colleagues, managers, friends and family enhances employees' creativity. But is this always the case? No, a positive effect depends on the work environment. This is the conclusion of new joint research study led by UvA work and organizational psychologist Roy Sijbom.

1For example, managers are encouraged to engage customers in order to confirm whether their business model is workable and scholars attend conferences to obtain feedback on their research results. A definite assumption is that individuals who have obtained feedback will also actually (be able to) use it.

“The idea is simple: seeking feedback from different sources - also known as feedback source variety -- benefits one's creativity since it leads to a greater diversity of viewpoints”, says Sijbom. “And the more diverse the viewpoints, the more it benefits one's creativity because by combining all the different viewpoints new perspectives will emerge that in turn will result in more creativity. 2

The researchers examined how specific characteristics of the immediate work environment influence the relationship between feedback source variety and creative performance. 3 One is the recognized rate of change of performance standards. The other is the extent to which employees feel they have sufficient time to develop creative ideas at work (experienced creative time pressure). “We discovered a growing relationship between the search for input from a variety of feedback sources and creativity, but only when performance standards within an organization are changing and when a relatively low creative time pressure is experienced”, says Sijbom.

Sijbom offers several recommendations: “4In a more concrete sense, organizations can, for example, consider using feedback workshops in which employees are encouraged to reflect on diverse feedback and equipped with techniques and strategies on how to absorb feedback in their daily work. In addition, managers should not only stimulate their employees to actively cultivate relationships with potential feedback sources within and outside the organization, but also provide sufficient time to process the feedback obtained from these relationships.”

A. They thus focused on two elements that are typical for contemporary work environments.

B. The researchers used online questionnaires to obtain data.

C. The notion that obtaining external feedback about one's ideas is essential for increasing creativity is deeply rooted in society.

D. The most important is that when an organization stimulates feedback seeking, it needs to ensure that the work environment is excellent enough to use the benefits of feedback.

E. The question, however, is whether these beneficial effects always occur.

F.  The creative achievements were assessed by their direct managers.

22、   The production and distribution of food accounts for around a third of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions (排放). But as a consumer? It’s difficult to measure the climate impact of what you eat.

A Dublin-based startup called Evocco could soon make it much easier. It lets users track and improve the climate impact of your food purchases. Users simply photograph their grocery receipts using the Evocco app, which identifies the food products by reading the printed text and using machine learning. It then calculates the carbon footprint based on the store’s location and by checking the type, weight and origin o£ a food against a database. The database is maintained by Eaternity, a life cycle assessment company based in Switzerland. If the receipt doesn’t contain enough data on a product, it will give an estimate based on similar products and reference points.

The app is available for free on iOS and Android devices, which has been downloaded more than 1,000 times since its launch at the end of last year. As well as the personal shopping app — which Evocco hopes to launch in the United States by the end of this year — the company is developing a digital tool to sell to food storekeepers, e-commerce platforms and delivery apps that will track the climate impact of a product’s journey through the supply chain. The aim is to help storekeepers provide climate impact information directly to consumers, and more importantly, to give Evocco access to product data to improve its app.

The Evocco app is not the only app looking to reach this climate-conscious market. There’s Capture, which estimates monthly CO2 emissions by asking users a series of questions on diet, transport and other factors, as well as Yayzy and My Carbon Action, which link to a user’s bank account, calculating their footprint from trade.

【1】What is the Evocco app designed to do?

A.Confirm the origin of food products.

B.Work out the climate effect of food.

C.Collect varieties of grocery receipts.

D.Monitor customers’ shopping practices.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The product.

B.The receipt.

C.Evocco.

D.Eaternity.

【3】What do we know about the company Evocco from Paragraph 3?

A.It profits a great deal from its app.

B.It has launched its app in America.

C.It is trying to get its app improved.

D.It prefers to sell its app to storekeepers.

【4】What does the last paragraph imply?

A.The Evocco app is still far from satisfactory.

B.Smart tools make tracking carbon footprint easier.

C.Present digital markets should be strictly restricted.

D.Environmental awareness boosts food industry rapidly.

23、   Only a few people in Toronto have the luck to live within walking distance from their workplace. For the rest of us, commuting (长途上下班) is a rather unpleasant daily necessity.

So how do you avoid a traffic jam in Toronto? You can do it in the old way and listen to one of the radio stations that give regular updates about the traffic situation in Toronto's streets. Seeing the big picture of Toronto's traffic and knowing when and where heavy traffic occurs is a must. From my own experience, there are situations where a quick decision can help you make it in time for an event or a meeting. That's why we prepared three short videos showing the overall traffic situation in Toronto from dawn to night. You can click them and watch.

With the help of "Google Maps", where you can watch the live traffic density all over the world and average traffic data based on past conditions, we are able to provide you with traffic maps for a typical (平常的) Friday.

Friday traffic in Toronto is quite fast in the early morning, with only a few hot spots showing up at the major junctions (交叉点) at 7:00 am. The morning traffic jam starts light at 7:30 and the traffic gradually slows down to reach a breaking point at 8:30. The roads are quite free afterwards, only Allen Road is likely to be jammed around lunchtime from 11:30 am to 12:00. It comes as no surprise that Friday afternoon brings heavy traffic as early as 1:30 pm, mainly on the Don Valley Parkway. You won't have a good time getting away from the city from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, as there is a good chance to get caught in a traffic jam. The traffic in Toronto is quite heavy on a Friday night. I hope you will have a nice Friday night in the city and a safe journey home this Friday!

1By saying "commuting is a rather unpleasant daily necessity", the writer refers to the fact that ______ .

A.buses are usually very crowded.

B.people have to travel a long way to work

C.people are often stuck in traffic jams.

D.people usually cannot do anything on the way to work.

2According to Paragraph 2, when you are in a traffic jam, what should you do?

A.Do nothing but to wait patiently.

B.Report your situation to a radio station.

C.Make a quick decision and find another way to go.

D.Relax and enjoy some good radio programmes.

3What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.What the traffic in Toronto is like for a typical Friday.

B.How to avoid heavy traffic on Friday.

C.Why the traffic is terrible on Friday.

D.What "Google Maps" can do for us.

4Where is this passage taken from?

A.A TV programme. B.A radio programme.

C.A travel booklet. D.A website.

24、The expression “the calm before the storm” is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument. British sailors invented the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become still and the winds would drop.

Science has given us the reason. According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid (湿热的) air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm clouds have taken all the energy they can take from the air, the air is pushed out by the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable(稳定的), so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.

The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, probably three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good method is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.

However, due to the complexity(复杂性) of storm system, not all storms take place after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and strong winds.

So, you’d better keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable way to predict the storm.

【1】What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A.How the storm takes its energy.

B.Why a peaceful period happens before some storms.

C.Why storms, tornadoes and hurricanes are different.

D.What danger storms may cause.

【2】If you count 12 seconds between a lightening flash and a thunder clap, how far is probably the storm?

A.Three kilometers away.

B.Four kilometers away.

C.Five kilometers away.

D.Six kilometers away.

【3】What is suggested to predict a coming storm?

A.Rely on your personal experience.

B.Stay at the shelter all the time.

C.Follow the latest forecast.

D.Keep yourself in your area.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Heavy storms don’t usually last long.

B.Weather reports often fail to predict a storm.

C.Storms have a big influence on our life.

D.It is usually, but not always calm before a storm.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was eleven years old standing outside in just my underwear while I watched the house that I grew up in rapidly burn to the ground. A few minutes earlier I had been sound asleep in my nice,   warm bed when a scream woke me up.

My grandmother’s bedroom was just next to mine and my brother’s,   A fire had broken out there and awakened her. Hearing her my older brother had sprung into action. While I stumbled around in the smoke and darkness he ran from room to room quickly waking everyone in the house. The house,   however,   was over 50 years old and made of wood. Before we could do anything the fire consumed it. We all barely made it outside before the flames engulfed every room. I stood there shivering while the fire destroyed my books,   clothes,   and toys. I watched helplessly while my Mom cried and my Dad swore. I wondered what was going to happen to us now that we had lost all of our things. As I looked around,   though,   I realized something for the first time: The things that matter,   aren’t things.

I saw my older brother running across the swinging bridge by our house to get help. I saw my oldest brother who was on crutches from an earlier accident standing unsteadily on one leg. I saw my grandmother and Dad huddled together and my Mom holding our little dog in her arms.

I realized at that moment that we were all alive.

I still think of that fire in the night that helped me to become who I am today.
