21、Recently, we were given the opportunity to review a book written by a young author. When we received it, I noted how beautifully done it was. While often the case---we see beautifully written and illustrated books all the time---but how often do they come from a 10-year-old? Sewing a Friendship, written by a creative and talented young girl named Natalie Tinti, is such a book.
Developing friendships is an area that Natalie Tinti has researched in her own life. In her book, Sewing a Friendship, she tells what great things can happen if kids take a step toward friendship.
Tinti’s characters in Sewing a Friendship have colorful and creative personalities. Jonsy Jipsy loves singing and belly dance. Sokron Blossom lives in a neat and tidy world and loves to read fashion magazines. Meeka likes brain games and Nina is happy with her life and the music it brings her.
All but one of the characters seems happy with their lives. One of the girls, Kiki Shaver, was sad to live in a small home with her aunt and uncle. She had no friend and didn’t know how to make them. When four girls invites her into the circle of their friendship, it’s no wonder that Kiki is hesitant and uneasy.
The story continues as the four girls invite and accept a “ not so likeable” girl into their circle to win a fashion show. The girls feel a strong bond of friendship after the show. Kiki then understands that taking a step towards friendship is better than being alone. All the girls learn that by having the courage to include others, you can “ sew a friendship”.
Today, it seems that almost every news headline begins with a child’s suicide---or murder---because of being bullied(欺侮),not having friends or family to discuss issues with and feelings of low self –respect. What’s causing these senseless terrible events? If more kids would invite the outcasts(被驱逐者) into their circle of friends, lives would be saved as well as pointed in another direction.
Natalie Tinti finds her voice in Sewing a Friendship ---and shows a talent that’s rare for such a young girl. Recommended reading for all young adult fans.

22、How can people speak their mind without saying anything? This is a question that scientists have aimed to answer for a long time.Researchers recently brought an upgraded device that can translate users’ brain waves into daily speech.
Previously, the team led by Edward Chang at the University of California, San Francisco, developed an Al-based system that can identify up to 50 commonly used words based on the participant’s brain waves. The participant was a paralyzed(瘫痪的)man who had been implanted with 16 electrodes(电极)under his skull.
According to their paper published in November, the team upgraded the system which can now translate thoughts into complete sentences on a computer screen.
Their tests showed that the device could decode silently spoken letters from a 1,152-word vocabulary at a speed of about 29 characters per minute. The accuracy was up to 94 percent. “It shows strong promise for restoring communication by tapping into the brain’s natural speech machinery,”Chang said to the university’s news website.
However, this method can still be problematic since users still need to undergo surgery. Scientists at the University of Texas, US, have tried to translate people’s thoughts without even touching their heads, reported Live Science.
The new technique is called fMRI,or functional magnetic resonance imaging(功能性磁共振成像). It’s a safer way of “reading”brain activity. Active brain cells have more oxygen. By tracking these cells, scientists can translate brain activity.
The team asked participants to listen to16 hours of radio shows while scanning their brains. Then they used a computer algorithm(算法)to create a story based on the fMRI recording. It matched the radio shows pretty well.
Also, the algorithm could basically explain the story of a silent movie that the participants watched. The team aims to develop this technology so that it can be used in brain-computer interfaces(脑机接口)designed for people who cannot speak or type.
【1】What do we know about the device mentioned in Para 2?
A.It was implanted into a man’s heart.
B.It can help restore patients’ lost memory.
C.It was developed through cooperation.
D.It can identify about 50 rarely used words.
【2】How does fMRI“read”people’s minds?
A.By tracking their active brain cells.
B.By putting electrodes into their brains.
C.By recording their reaction to radio shows.
D.By matching their brain activity with their habits.
【3】Why is fMRI chosen compared to the first device mentioned in the story?
A.It’s cheaper.
B.It’s more accurate.
C.It’s smaller in size.
D.It’s safer.
【4】What can be concluded about fMRI from the last two paragraphs?
A.It can only read what participants hear.
B.It can be used in brain-computer interfaces.
C.It can read every detail of participants’ minds.
D.It cannot work out what people imagine in their heads.
23、At 26, Jane Goodall had no college education or science training. But since childhood, she had been dreaming of working closely with animals in Africa. “All through my childhood people said you can’t go to Africa. You’re a girl.” Goodall said. “But my mother used to say, if you really want to, there’s nothing you can’t do.”
In 1957, the 26-year-old Goodall went to Kenya to work as a secretary. She also arranged to meet the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who was so impressed by her enthusiasm that he hired her as his assistant. She went with him on many trips to the African jungle and in 1960 Leakey sent Goodall to live among chimpanzees in a remote animal preserve, recording the animals’ behavior and interactions.
For three months Goodall made little progress. But she said, “I never came close to giving up.” Her breakthrough came one day when she saw a male chimpanzee stick a piece of grass into a termite (白蚁) hill, then put the grass in his mouth. Afterward she came to the hill and did the same. Pulling the grass out, she discovered dozens of termites on it. The discovery — that some animals use tools — was unknown to most scientists at the time.
Goodall saw chimpanzees exhibit human-like emotions, such as jealousy and love. But she also discovered they were capable of violent attacks against each other.
Goodall received her Ph.D. in the study of animal behavior at England’s Cambridge University. Now she travels around the globe raising money to preserve wildlife. “I love being in the forest with the chimpanzees,” she said. “I’d much rather be there than traveling around from city to city.”
【1】What was Goodall’s childhood dream?
A. She dreamed of going to college.
B. She dreamed of studying animals in Africa.
C. She dreamed of becoming a famous scientist.
D. She dreamed of traveling all around the world.
【2】What did Goodall’s mother think of her dream?
A. As a girl she should not go to the African jungle.
B. Her dream would remain a dream unless she got the right training.
C. As a girl she should stay away from violent animals.
D. She could make her dream come true if she was determined.
【3】Goodall’s most important discovery is that ________.
A. some animals use tools
B. like humans animals have emotions
C. chimpanzees could attack each other violently
D. termites are chimpanzees’ favorite food
【4】What is Goodall doing now?
A. Studying animal behavior at Cambridge University.
B. Raising funds for the preservation of wildlife.
C. Observing chimpanzees in African jungles.
D. Working hard for a PhD degree.
24、There is nothing quite like enjoying the sights, sounds and culture of a city while tasting a cup of coffee outdoors. But it is not that enjoyable when heat waves sweep the city. An outdoor cooling system produced by Kinonko, an Israeli (以色列的) company, began to be tested in Tel Aviv. The sweltering city is a perfect place to try the new technology.
With global warming heating up the temperature, it will soon be too hot to sit outside in cafes. While outdoor cooling systems have existed for a while, most of them use some sort of water or misting system to cool the air around them, consuming too much water and power. After two years of development, the perfect solution to the problem was found. “We have invented a new generation of air conditioner, ” Kinonko CEO Leizer said.
As Leizer introduced, the energy is from the pressure created between liquid nitrogen (氮) and gas nitrogen. When liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees turns into gas, it produces a very strong pressure and the pressure is used to run a mechanical engine. It is that mechanical engine that slowly releases freezing nitrogen gas to cool down the air around it.
The technology is unique and amazing. Beyond the coolness of the concept, it also has other advantages. The work unit doesn’t need to be power-driven, and doesn’t blow out harmful warm air as it works. As for the potential price, it will probably be no more expensive than any other air conditioner. In addition, the liquid nitrogen container will need to be replaced every seven to ten days, depending on usage. This makes it an affordable option for all sorts of businesses. The cooling system is expected to be on the market in 2024.
【1】What does the underlined word “sweltering” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Warm.
B.Dry.
C.Hot.
D.Freezing.
【2】What problem does the existing outdoor cooling systems have?
A.They are wasteful.
B.They overheat easily.
C.They often break down.
D.They are slow to cool the air.
【3】What does Paragraph 3 mainly explain?
A.What powers the engine.
B.What turns liquid into gas.
C.How the pressure is formed.
D.How the new system works.
【4】What is the purpose of this text?
A.To promote a company.
B.To settle an energy crisis.
C.To introduce a technology.
D.To market a misting system.

Curing diseases will time. Over short periods of five or ten years, it may not seem like we're making a But in the long run, trees planted now will grow, and one day, you or your children wilt see what we can only imagine; a world without diseases. Two Canadian boys, Alder and Greg, both of 13, had their friendship tested on a recent trip to the Rocky Mountains.
On Sunday morning, the two boys decided to climb the mountain near the camp by themselves while their parents prepared lunch at the camp. After two hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the breathtaking view, completely relaxed and feeling like birds.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down. Greg accidentally fell down and twisted his ankle (脚踝). He could move but it hurt. Greg told Alder to leave him and go back to their parents to get help. “But is it safe for you to be alone?” Alder cleaned the dirt from Greg’s hands and tried to help him stand up. “Is it OK?” Alder asked. “A bit troublesome, I guess.” Greg forced a smile. Alder did not want to leave his friend. “What should I do?” he thought to himself. Mountain climbers passed by and Alder was not sure if they would like to be disturbed on the way to their destinations.
