21、The teacher who did the most to encourage me was , as it happened , my aunt . She was Myrtle C . Manigault , the wife of my mother’s brother Bill . She taught in second grade at all-black Summer School in Camden , New Jersey . During my childhood and youth , Aunt Myrtle encouraged me to develop every aspect of my potential , without regard for what was considered practical or possible for black females . I liked to sing ; she listened to my voice and pronounced it good . I couldn’t dance ; she taught me the basic dancing steps . 22、“The only way to accomplish something is through hard work,” says actor Greg Tarzan Davis. “The first step is to get started.”

In a virtual interview, I asked Davis about his life and career. He grew up in a large family in New Orleans, Louisiana. After earning a degree in elementary education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Davis became a teacher. He always encouraged his young students to follow their dreams.

One day, he decided to take his own advice. Although he enjoyed teaching, he had been enthusiastic about acting. “The first step is always the hardest,” Davis said. “But once you get past it and stay consistent, I promise, you will achieve your goal.”

At the age of 29, Davis had roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. He also starred in Grey’s Anatomy, a TV series about a group of young doctors. For 2022’s Top Gun, the actor learned how to fly a fighter jet in order to play the role of Lieutenant Javy “Coyote” Machado.

Davis sees the connection between acting and teaching. “As an actor, you’re required to dig deep into the depths of your childlike imagination when playing different roles,” he said. “What I learned the most as a teacher was how to be free with my mind and imaginative with my thoughts by simply observing my first-grade students and listening to the big ideas they had, which were so real to them.”

Davis still keeps an eye on the future. He is motivated by a desire to help the next generation follow their dreams. “The people who come after me inspire me,” he said. He wants to show others, especially kids, that anything is possible. He hosted movie screenings in New Orleans as a way to give back to the community that nurtured him as a child.

23、Dolly Parton was one of the six honorees to receive the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy on Thursday night at Gotham Hall in New York. She was celebrated for her extraordinary contributions that make the world a better place.

It is thought that Dolly Parton has been quietly paying for the band uniforms of many Tennessee high schools for years. She used the songwriting payment she earned from Whitney Houston’s version of I Will Always Love You to purchase a shopping center in Nashville to support the surrounding black community in Houston’s honor.

Her “Imagination Library” provides children under age 5 with a free book every month. The library aims to inspire a love for reading through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Currently, Parton sends out about 2 million free books each month. Parton has also donated many books to disaster relief. In 2021, she even raised $700,000 to help residents impacted by the terrible flooding in Middle Tennessee.

In her Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy speech, Parton said she didn’t really have a strategy for her donations. “I just give from my heart. I never know what I’m going to do or why I’m going to do it. I often see a need, and if I can meet it, then I will,” she said.

This year, Parton also carried out the Care More Program at her Dollywood Parks and Resorts, which gives employees a day off to volunteer at a nonprofit of their choice. Parton said, “I hope the program will let people realize that when they help somebody, they help themselves more.” “That’s what we should do as human beings,” she said. “I’ve never quite understood why we have to let religion and politics and other things stand in the way of just being good human beings. I think it’s important just to feel like you’re doing your part and doing something good and right.”

【1】Why did Parton buy a shopping center?

A.To give aid to others.

B.To honor black leaders.

C.To pay for songwriting.

D.To support her music career.

【2】What is the main purpose of “Imagination Library”?

A.To sell children’s books.

Just like my hometown, tropical regions only have two seasons, including the dry season that usually starts from April to September and the wet or rainy season which usually happens from October to March. 四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

Recently, 117 schools in Qujiang District, Zhejiang Province, have included a bow ceremony or “zuoyi(作揖礼)in the teaching content, requiring teachers and students to meet and make a bow with hands folded in front.

Cheng Junning, an officer from Qujiang District First Middle School, said that for thousands of years, the Chinese people have been using “zuoyi” as a general gesture for hello. To a certain extent, it plays a role in carrying forward the traditional culture and has its value.

Dr. Tang Lap Kwong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong said he was “very excited to see this and hope they will insist on it in the future” in an interview with the Chinanews. He said it is a good idea to promote Chinese traditional culture in schools. People have to respect the culture.

However, opinions split online. Not seeing the value of the movement, some netizens argue that promoting the bow ceremony in schools is just formalism. Teachers and students are so familiar with each other that they usually greet or wave when they meet, which is relatively normal. So it is not necessary to make a bow for them.
