二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Even with the most recent advances in medicine, your beloved cat won’t live forever, but will it someday be possible to revive your cat with cloning?

On December 22, 2001, scientists at Texas A & M University announced the birth of CC, the world’s first cloned cat. CC has the same DNA blueprint as her genetic mother, Rainbow. But a closer view in color reveals they don’t actually look identical. Rainbow has a lot of orange in her fur while CC has no orange coloring at all.

So why the difference in appearance? A clone is never actually identical and the most obvious difference is coat color. The orange coat color gene in cats is randomly activated in some clusters (簇) of skin cells. When activated, the skin cells produce orange fur, otherwise they would produce black fur.

But physical appearance was just the start of the differences seen between Rainbow and CC. Personality is where the largest gaps to emerge, since a lot of factors greatly change behavioral development. These influences start in the womb (子宫) with factors as simple as nutrition. Kittens of mothers who lack nutrition delay in crawling, eye opening, climbing and playing. Once the youngsters are born, their environment becomes even more diverse and differences become more obvious. As expected, social contact with the mother during the first four weeks is essential to normal emotional development. Those lacking this contact are unusually fearful of other cats and people. They’re also slow in thinking and show difficulty learning.

The difference in personality between CC and Rainbow were clear. Rainbow was reserved while CC was curious and outgoing. When CC was five, she had three kittens “the natural way”. She died when she was 18 years old, three years longer than the average life span of a cat.

The take home message with CC is that cloning will not revive your pet. Instead, you would be more likely to get something that looked similar to your beloved pet but that acted quite differently, or your clone could even end up looking like a complete stranger.

【1】Why does CC look different from Rainbow?

A.Certain gene of CC was inactivated.

B.CC didn’t get enough nutrition.

C.Their DNA blueprints were different.

D.CC had little social contact with Rainbow.

【2】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The physical differences between CC and Rainbow.

B.The important role nutrition plays in behavioral development.

C.Factors contributing to CC and Rainbow’s different personalities.

D.The importance of social contact to emotional development.

【3】What can we infer about CC from the text?

A.She had a quiet and reserved personality.

B.She has nothing in common with Rainbow.

C.She was cloned for commercial use.

D.She lived a long life.

【4】What’s the author’s opinion on cloning pets according to the text?

A.It is realistic.

B.It’s understandable.

C.It’s unwise.

D.It’s harmful.

22、It can be really hard to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.

At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. Therefore you can work out some words with your knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this did not work well. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter first and at the end of that chapter, highlight the new words and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before using a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can understand merely from the context. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.

If you can find a translation of the books you have read as a child, I would strongly advise reading those if you are a complete beginner. However, if you feel a bit more confident reading in English, I would personally recommend the series of ‘Harry Potter’ books by J. K. Rowling or any of the Roald Dahl children's books.

【1】What makes it hard for the author to learn German?

A.The author had a poor memory.

B.The author had no interest in it.

D.The author couldn't read books fluently.

【2】What did the author think of reading children's books in the target language at first?

A.Interesting.

B.Stupid.

C.Helpful.

D.Boring.

【3】What does the author try to express mainly in Paragraph 3?

A.How to deal with new words while reading.

B.Why it is helpful to read children's book at first.

C.How to choose a proper book to match your level.

D.How to form the habit of reading in the target language.

【4】Why does the author write this text?

A.To give tips on how to learn a new language.

B.To persuade the readers to learn a new language.

C.To stress the importance of reading in language learning.

D.To share the author's stories of learning a new language.

23、Based on a new series of experiments, researchers now believe the slower a person’s tendency to walk, the less able their brain.

Researchers performed gait (步态)-speed analysis on hundreds of middle-aged people, comparing the results with a range of physical and psychological measures. Doctors have long used walking speed to gain a quick and reliable understanding of older people’s cognitive capability (认知能力). Until now, however, no one knew it could mean potential brain health so much earlier in life. The correlation was so obvious that the US scientists now say walking tests could be used to provide an early indication of dementia (痴呆).

The study showed an average difference of 16 IQ points between the slowest and the fastest walkers at the age of 45. This reflected both the participants’ natural walking speed and the pace they achieved when asked to walk as fast as they could.

In the study, slower walkers were shown to have “increasing aging” on a 19-measure range designed by researchers, and their lungs and teeth tended to be in worse shape than the people who walked faster.

The team at Duke University in North Carolina said genetic factors may explain the link between walking speed, brain ability and physiological health, or that better brain health might promote physical activity, leading to better walking speed.

“The thing that’s really striking is that this is in 45-year-old people, not the older patients who are usually assessed with such measures.” said Dr. Rasmussen, who led the research. The 904 New Zealand men and women who were tested at 45 were tracked from the age of three, each experiencing many tests over the years. The long-term data collection enabled researchers to find that little kids with lower IQ scores, language ability, ability to tolerate setbacks, tended to have slower gait speeds by middle age.

The researchers said some of the differences in health and cognition may be the result of lifestyle choices individuals have made. But the study also suggests that there are already signs in early life of who would become the slowest walkers. “We may have a chance here to see who’s going to do better health-wise in later life,” said Dr. Rasmussen.

【1】What does the underlined word “correlation” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Proof.

B.Difference.

C.Problem.

D.Link.

【2】What makes the findings of the study reliable?

A.The collection of long-term data.

B.The difference in walking speed.

A.Those walking faster.
