21、Thirteen-year-old Sean Nichols plays basketball, rides horses, and competes in Taekwondo. That surprises some people because Sean uses a wheelchair.
“If someone has a physical disability, they can still do things that other kids can,” Sean explains. “They either have to do it in a different way, or it’s just a bit harder.” He’s been sharing that message with kids and adults in his community since he was three.
When Sean was a baby, his family learned that he has a spinal condition that makes walking difficult. As he started school each year, he and his mom would talk with his class to help the kids understand why Sean uses a wheelchair. He now talks with kids in younger grades and answers their questions himself.
He also speaks at a nearby university each year and works with people who are studying physical therapy. He helps them understand what it’s like to live with a disability and learn how to treat kids with challenges like his. “It’s great helping people who are going to help other kids down the line,” Sean says.
Sean finds lots of ways to increase disability awareness, including through events at school and in Scouts. He and his coaches demonstrate wheelchair basketball, then observers get to try out a chair. They see how much arm strength it takes. “It’s funny to see all the people say, ‘Oh, this is going to be easy’,” Sean says. “Then after, they take back what they said!” If kids want to race, Sean will race them. At times he goes backward—and still wins!
Sean hopes to change how people with disabilities are seen. “My goal is, if a person later sees someone with a disability, they see a person,” he says, “like themselves.”

22、 It’s July. You’re in a boat gliding through calm water off the Finnish coast, on your way to visit a sauna (桑拿), pick berries, and sleep in a tent. At your side is a “happiness guide,” one of a small group of Finns employed by a national tourism agency to teach international visitors something about why the Scandinavian country ranks at the top of a report ranking nations on happiness.
“One of the uniquely Finnish experiences which contributes to our well-being is our special relationship with nature, especially our forests,” says Hetta Huittinen, a spokesperson for Business Finland, which started Rent A Finn, a new contest that will bring travelers to Finland this summer for a free trip with a Finnish guide.
In Finnish law, the public has the right to wander; in natural areas, even on privately owned land, it’s legal for anyone to make temporary use of the land. You’re allowed to go anywhere and pick berries and mushrooms or whatever you find there, or even stay overnight in a tent without asking permission. Most Finns also spend long time outside in the summer as they rent or borrow cottages in the countryside; the law requires a minimum of five weeks of annual leave.
“People actually are both happier and healthier when they see trees, when they’re walking to work,” said John Helliwell, one of the authors of the World Happiness Report, adding that the slow pace of walking and connecting with others also has a benefit. When I first tried to contact someone for this article, he couldn’t talk because he was headed to the sauna.
It might be difficult for visitors to collect much wisdom from a two-or three-day trip, but Business Finland hopes that the winners chosen to travel will learn something by diving into nature with a Finn.

23、 Katherine Rooks remembers when she first learned that a punctuation mark could be so powerful The Denver-based writer had sent her high school-aged son a text message-coming home from school. “I could tell from his response that he was offended all of a sudden. And when he came home, he walked in the door, came over and said, ‘What did you mean by this?’” Rooks was confused how could a simple text message send confusion?
“And so we looked at the text together and I said, ‘Well, I meant, see you later, or something. I don’t remember exactly what it said.’ And he said, ‘But you ended with a period! I thought you were really angry!’” Rooks wasn’t angry, and she explained to her son that periods are how you end a sentence.
But in text messaging—at least for younger adults—periods do more than just end a sentence: they also can set a tone. Gretchen McCulloch, a linguist said that when it comes to text messaging, the period has lost its original purpose because rather than needing a symbol to indicate the end of a sentence, you can simply hit send at the end of your message. That doesn’t mean the period has lost all purposes in text messaging. Now it can be used to indicate the gravity of a situation or a sense of finality.
However, caution is needed, said McCulloch, noting that problems can start to arise when you combine a period with a positive emotion, such as “Sure.” or “Sounds good.” “Now you’ve got positive words and serious punctuation and the clash between them is what creates that sense of passive-aggression,” said McCulloch.
Our language has evolved, and “what we have done with our incredible linguistic genius is finding ways to insert some kind of emotional, interpersonal information into texting,” said Celia Klin, a psychology professor at Binghamton University. “And what we have is things like periods, emoticons and other kinds of punctuation. So people have repurposed the period to mean something else.” And that something else is passive-aggression.
【1】What left Rooks at a loss?
A.Her son’s untimely coming home.
B.Her son’s heavy reliance on text messages.
C.Her son’s inability to adapt to high school life.
D.Her son’s unexpected reaction to the message.

D.It appeared in an improper position.

24、Gestures-such as pointing or waving-go hand in hand with a child's first words, and twins lag (滞后)behind single children in producing and using those gestures, two studies from Georgia State University psychology researchers show.
The lag in gesture among twins may be mostly due to lower parental input, Ozcaliskan said. It's likely that parents caring for twins engage in shorter conversations with their children, including gesturing less, because their attention is divided and their labor is doubled. However, parents of single children used a greater amount and diversity of gestures than parents of twins. Ozcaliskan said she had grown curious about gesture because it had not yet been studied among twins. We have already known that twins are initially at a disadvantage where language is concerned. Most of the time, these lags are within the normal range of differences, and nothing to worry about. Almost all children will catch up to each other by around age three and a half.
“However, there was almost nothing in research on gesturing among twins," Ozcaliskan said. Babies start using pointing around 10 months, a few months before they produce their first words. Gesture helps them convey what they can't yet communicate in speech and prepares the way for children's early words.
Twins sometimes develop their own systems of communication, even their own “twin language," which has also been shown to delay language acquisition. “Perhaps it also delays the use of gestures. Gesture and speech together form a closely integrated system in a child's development, and a child's first gestures often precede their first attempts at speech," Ozcaliskan said.
"Gesture is a very powerful tool," she said. “Pay attention to your child's gestures, and then provide verbal(言语的) descriptions to help their language development, such as naming objects when children point to them."
【1】What mainly causes twins to produce and use fewer gestures?
A.Reduced parental input.
B.Undivided parental attention.
C.Too much “twin language".
D.Slow language development.
【2】The underlined word “precede" in Paragraph 5 probably means _

B.When the child makes a small mistake, parents ignore it.
C.When the child points to a doll, parents pass it to him or her quickly.
D.When the child points to a bottle, parents point to it, saying “bottle".
【4】What can be learned from the study?
A.Twins fall behind single children in early gesturing.
B.Twins are at a disadvantage in language of a lifetime.
C.Enough research has been done on twins' gesturing.
