二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、When someone boards a train in London — entering one of the world’s most admired transportation systems — they probably do not have visions of clean beaches and rolling surf of San Diego on the west coast of America. But they would not be wrong if they did, considering that London’s Oyster Card is powered by Cubic, a San Diego-based company with headquarters 5,500 miles down the road.

San Diego is the 17th largest city in America, yet it leads the world in biotechnology, clean technology, defense technology and telecommunications, and it is also the third-most patent-intense region in the world. That is because policymakers, businesses and educators in San Diego are working together to create a creativity ecosystem, including some of the world’s smartest companies, a talented and loyal workforce, top-rate universities and easy access to international markets. San Diego’s world-class universities and research centers foster a talented workforce, and attract top academicians.

Across an ocean and a continent, London is seeing similar economic achievement. The city’s exports represent 25 percent of the U.K.’s national exports — a sum that is valued at about £130 billion — and is particularly strong in service exports, where it accounts for 50 percent of the U.K. total. At the same time, it is maintaining its strength in financial and business services, media, tech and architectural surveying and construction services. London also leads the way in the U.K.’s exports of £100 billion of goods and services to the U.S., its largest single trading partner. In fact, in 2013 London alone exported nearly £4 billion in goods to the U.S. — their largest market behind the European Union.

So while both cities focus on creating success at home, London and San Diego are also focused on creating a strong international market for what they produce. Both have advanced industries that promote rapid innovation and significant job creation. And they are working together — sharing best practices and challenges, and learning where their trade and investment coincide.

23、When people hear the news that David Bennett, recipient of the world’s first pig heart transplant, died on March 9, they might believe that the transplant was at fault. But in fact his transplant surgery represents a great step forward in medical history toward xenotransplantation (异种器官移植) success.

His death came just two months after the operation Jan 7. He was ineligible (不合格的) for the heart transplant list and xenotransplantation was, his only option. The fact that he was able to get two more months of life with the surgery proves its success.

Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for decades, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the transplant waiting list crisis. In the US alone over-100,000 patients are on the transplant list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart or lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has looked to animal organs as a viable (可行的) alternative.

Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century but it has not been widely successful for two main reasons. First, it is incredibly difficult for even human-to-human transplants to be successful due to organ rejection. It is much harder with animal organs. Second, xenotransplantation has been highly restricted due to feat of virus transmissions from primates or pigs. In the late 1990s, some countries placed strict guidelines or outright bans on the use of animal tissue and organs for people.

Aside from Bennett’s gene-edited pig heart, late last year doctors New York University achieved some success in attaching pig kidneys to human blood vessels outside the body in patients on life support. Meanwhile, at the University of Alabama, doctors managed to actually implant (移植) gene-edited pig kidneys into a patient on life support.

Though these recent successes have been short-lived, they show that there may be a way to help more people with gene-edited organs from pigs.

【1】What do we know about the surgery?

A.It was one of the best choices for the patient.

B.It stands for the advances made in xenotransplantation.

C.It was the first successful xenotransplantation in history.

D.Without it, the patient would have lived two months longer.

【2】Why do scientists experiment with xenotransplantation?

A.To help patients recover from organ failure.

B.To find a practical alternative to human organs.

C.To make animal organs more useful to humans.

D.To ease the shortage of human organs for transplant.

【3】What may be the main concern about xenotransplantation?

A.The risk of spreading diseases.

B.The problem of public rejection.

C.The effects on other organs and tissues.

D.The damage to patients’ immune systems.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude toward the prospect of using pig organs for transplants?

A.Positive.

B.Worried.

C.Doubtful.

D.Uncertain.

24、The city of Marquette in Michigan is closing a section of a road to vehicular traffic every night to protect migrating salamanders (蝾螈). From 8 p. m. to 8 a. m. daily until April 15 or until the migration is completed, a section of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park will be closed, the city announced.

“Protecting the blue-spotted salamanders’ migration is vital, as they are an indicator species, informing us about the health of our environment,” said Kathleen Henry, Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) special projects coordinator (协调员) and education specialist. The salamanders spend the cold winter under-ground. Then every spring, they make their way to the water where they lay eggs.

It was in 2018 that Eli Bieri, a former Northern Michigan University student, noticed vehicles were killing hundreds of these migrating salamanders. “We would see thousands and thousands of salamanders crossing the street in just one night,” Bieri told the Detroit Free Press. “It was really amazing — until we see cars pass by and squish salamanders. That really troubled me — it kept me awake at night.” He enlisted the help of the SWP, who reached out to Marquette city officials. Last spring they got the relevant stretch of road within the park temporary closed to evening and overnight vehicular traffic.

In 2019, before the closure, they found 429 salamander carcasses (尸体) in the road. Last year, they counted only 3 carcasses. With that success demonstrated, city officials are doing the same this year. “The goal is to apply our science to wildlife management,” Bieri said. “To be able to see in-person the science applied to successful management practices was very satisfying.”

【1】What’s the significance of protecting the salamanders?

A.Salamanders can offer great financial benefits to the governments.

B.Protecting salamanders can greatly reduce traffic accidents at night.

C.Salamanders are a great sign for our environment’s conditions.

D.Salamanders are main food for other living creatures near the sea.

【2】What does the underlined word “squish” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Avoid.

B.Kill.

C.Feed.

D.Ignore.

【3】Which word can be used to describe the effect of protecting measure?

A.Successful.

B.Concerning.

C.Insufficient.

D.Ridiculous.

【4】What is a suitable title for the text?
