二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In this world, in many cases, a lot of same things can be united together. Also, many opposite things cannot be united by many people. But there is always a chance to unite two different things in one work. The following passage will tell you more about the possibility of combining painting and poetry.

Perhaps, it is not a new idea that a great work can be created by combining paintings and poems. In this case, we can unite both things in two ways. The first way is to make the poem as the main inspiration for the painting. It is also possible to write a poem after looking at a painting.

What about the next idea to combine painting and poetry? Well, we can combine both of them on a canvas. You can paint an oil painting on it and then write down the poem on that canvas. I do not know whether this kind of idea has been used for years. But this is quite a great new idea for me. It will make more people love painting and poetry at the same time. You will not need to read the poem on plain white cloth anymore.

A poem is a good way to represent a story or a thought. It is usually not too long and not easy to be understood literally (照字面意义). It is a series of words arranged in stanza (诗节) and lines with rhyme, which are quite changeable. Therefore, combining it with another type of art (such as painting) would be very good. You can get the message of the poem through the colors on the canvas. All you need to do is to use your creativity to make a painting with the right color and with great words on it.

1The underlined word “canvas” in Paragraph 3 probably means ____.

A. a wall of a building   B. a piece of paper

C. cloth for painting   D. the screen of a computer

2What can be inferred from the passage about painting and poetry?

A. Painting and poetry are so alike that they can be united.

B. Poetry can inspire us to paint and the opposite is also true.

C. Painting and poetry have been recently combined together.

D. The author created the idea of combining painting and poetry.

3According to the passage, a poem usually has all of the following features EXCEPT ________.

A. not being too long   B. being representative

C. having deep meanings   D. having fixed forms

22、   Although small business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, little attention has been paid to the need of young people, and even less to the children living on the street or in difficult condition.

Over the past nine years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children and develop opportunities for street children to earn income.

The S.K.I. Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Street children who took part in it were given bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages. A similar program was taken up in Bangalore, India. The Shoe Shine Collective was a program with the Y.W.C.A. in the Dominican Republic. The children in this project were lent money to buy shoe shine boxes. They were also given a safe place to store their equipment, and facilities for individual savings plans. The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a program with the Red Cross Society and the Y.W.C.A. Street youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit.

During the program, The S.K.I. and partner organizations have drawn lessons from the past: First of all, being a businessman is not for everyone, nor for every street child. And it is important for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills. Secondly, small loans are provided firstly for buying fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shine kits and basic building materials for a market stall. As the children gain experience, they can be given more loan amounts. And all S.K.L. programs have charged interest on the loans. Generally the rates have been lower than bank rates. Most importantly, it is believed that credit must be given with other types of support that help the young develop key life skills as well as productive businesses.

1How does S.K.I. help the street children?

A.By giving the street children chances to go to school.

B.By encouraging the public to give money to street children.

C.By creating chances for street children to make money.

D.By drawing the attention of governments to help street children.

2Street youths can be lent money to buy shoe shine boxes in _______.

A.The Dominican Republic B.Zambia

C.India D.Sudan

3The underlined word “assets” in the last paragraph probably can be replaced by _______.

A.clothing B.vehicle C.equipment D.belongings

4From the last paragraph we know _______.

A.each child can only enjoy one kind of loan

B.not all loans should be linked to training programs

C.any child can apply for the business training and loan

D.the children have to pay back slightly more money than they borrow

23、   NEW YORK—President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend immigration to the Unit States for 60 days to stop those applying for permanent residency from taking American job has drawn criticism from immigration supporters who brand it a “distraction” amid the coronavirus pandemic(流行病).

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” the president tweeted Monday night. Trump said he signed the executive order Wednesday. “This would ensure that unemployed Americans of all backgrounds will be first in line for jobs as our economy opens,” Trump said at Wednesday night’s coronavirus news briefing.

The president had initially wanted to suspend all immigration to the US to stop the spread of OVID-19 and “protect American jobs”, as 22 million have filed(申请) for unemployment. But on Tuesday he said his executive order would affect only some family members of US citizens seeking green cards (permanent residency IDs) and foreign workers who want to move to America.” It would be wrong and unjust for Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced with new immigrant labor flow in from abroad.” Trump said at the briefing.

The executive order won’t bar(禁止) immigrants already living in America seeking green cards, or the 85,000 workers a year given H-1B visas nor seasonal farm workers. It also will not stop people using temporary visas for work or travel.

“The Trump administration is again seeking to distract Americans from their own failures to secure testing, provide basic protections for all workers, and create a healthcare system that works for us all,” Bitta Mostofi, commissioner of the New York Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, told China Daily. He also said, “Among the l million essential workers in New York City working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic—delivery worker, EMS staff, drivers, healthcare personnel, and more—half are immigrant.”

Former US secretary of state John Kerry told CNN that the immigration order was “a sideshow, an effort to divert people’s attention”.

At least 6 million US healthcare workers were born abroad, including 29 percent of all doctors, 38 percent of home health aides(助力) and 23 percent of retail store pharmacists(药剂师), according to the Migration Policy Institute.

1Why did Trump sign the executive order according to Para. 2?

A.To improve the welfare of American people.

B.To reduce employment pressure in America.

C.To promote America’s economic development.

D.To avoid American population rising so quickly.

2What can we infer from Bitta Mostofi’s words in Para. 5?

A.Immigration to America should be limited to give local Americans more job chances.

B.The Trump administration is trying its best to secure testing to deal with the virus.

C.Immigrants play an important role in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic.

D.The Trump administration has created an effective healthcare system.

3What does the underlined words “divert people’s attention” in Para. 6 mean?

A.Ignore people’s attention

B.Control people’s attention

C.Focus on people’s attention

D.Take people’s attention away.

4Which of the following can serve as the best title for the news report?

A.US immigration suspension draws criticism.

B.US stops those applying for permanent residency.

C.US takes measures to stop spread of COVID-19.

D.US healthcare workers who were born abroad.

24、   This is the moment a cleaner at a British university burst into tears after students raised $ 2,063 to send him to Jamaica on vacation to see family.

Herman Gordon, who has worked at Bristol University for more than a decade, is described as “one of the most loved” members of its cleaning staff. 四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.

We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens. while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks , the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
