二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Animals can be reproduced by technology now; researchers can clone them. A clone is an exact copy of another animal or plant. Scientists have cloned a sheep which they have named Dolly. Researchers took genes from a ewe (母羊) and used them to create a copy (Dolly) of the ewe.

Why are scientists doing this research? One reason is to get information about genes so they can improve our health. They also want to learn how better farm animals can be produced. Cloning is a controversial issue for people. Some people think it is good because this research can help us, but other people think cloning is unacceptable. Some people think it might be possible to save endangered animals by cloning them. Tigers, elephants, and other endangered animals might be saved in this way.

In China, pandas are endangered because they are hunted and they are losing their habitat, so some Chinese scientists want to try to clone pandas to save them from extinction.

I don’t really like the idea of cloning animals, but I don’t think I want panda to become extinct. If the best way to save them is to make cloned pandas, they must be cloned.

I want to live with a lot of animals and nature. I don’t want animals to die out, especially pandas. I think humans must think more about protecting animals and nature. Maybe cloning is the way to save all endangered animals.

A. It is like other ordinary sheep we often see.

B. It is a bit like the ewe.

C. It is exactly like the ewe researchers took genes from.

D. They combine advantages of some animals to make a better one.

3By studying cloning, scientists can____.

A. make copies of many famous people in the world.

B. start a new industry where many more people may find jobs.

C. find ways to feed the whole world.

D. improve our health and produce fine animals.

4From the passage we can learn that____.

A. people are all for the technology of cloning.

B. only scientists are interested in cloning.

C. people don’t hold the same opinion about cloning.

D. all the people think cloning unacceptable.

22、When you need a job very much, you may end up taking one for which you are over qualified. Although you were initially grateful just to have the work, you now feel bored and depressed. Is there any way to change that?

Start by changing your opinion, says Caitlin Kelly, the author of Malled, a book based on her experience as a sales clerk after losing her job in journalism. “Don’t focus on what you’re not getting but what you are getting,” she says. “Be patient and work attentively with a wide range of people. It doesn’t matter what the job is –there are always things you can learn and skills you can develop.”

Hilary Pearl, the founder of a coaching firm, says, “Tell yourself the current situation isn’t the end of your career. Don’t overdramatize(过分夸大)the negative aspects but try to view the situation more philosophically: life has a series of stages, and this is one of them. Don’t forget to study even in the worst stage.”

Consider that because you’re overqualified, you may be able to learn or do things on the job that might not have been possible in a more demanding position, says Sarah Hathorn, the chief executive of Illustra Consulting. “You could spend your extra time in learning different aspects of the business and teaching others in the organization,” she says.

Is it possible to make your work more challenging, even if your job responsibilities aren’t likely to change?

Of course, you may seek tasks and responsibilities that force you to learn something new or to work harder. “You may be operating on autopilot(习惯性地)right now, but chances are that people above you are stressed,” Sarah Hathorn says. “take things off your boss’s plate and let him know which projects or tasks you want to learn more about.”

Always express your request positively, saying that you love new challenges, rather than complaining that you’re bored and underused, says Ethun, the president of the Park Avenue Group. In your down time, educate yourself about the company and its industry. “Read corporate information, analyst reports and related news articles,” she says. “If your boss accepts your suggestions, it will make you a more valuable employee.”

1According to Caitlin Kelly, ______.

A. one should be willing to do some small things

B. being a salesman is not as important as being a journalist

C. performing your regular duties well is important

D. doing a simple job well will bring you a sense of success

B. the present job doesn’t matter to us in a long run

C. one should be satisfied with his present situation

D. one should look forward instead of complaining about the present situation

23、William Cary said he has learned to appreciate small victories with his 17-year-old son Ben, who has autism and doesn’t speak, so he choked up while describing how proud he was when Ben buttoned his pants for the very first time after going to the bathroom. But one victory that Ben achieved long ago was surfing. Since the age of six, he has been participating in Surfers Healing surf camps for children with autism.

The annual event returned recently to Tourmaline Surf Park in California. More than 150 children took turns riding the waves with 15 professional surfers as well as a small group of volunteers. Ben could hardly wait to get in the water with surfer Graham. Within minutes of hitting the sand, Ben mounted a long board (冲浪板) and Graham gently pushed him out into the thigh-high surf. Graham, who has an 11-year-old son with autism, said he’s seen firsthand how children immediately transform when they’re rolling in the ocean waves.

Surfers Healing was started 20 years ago by surfer Izzy Paskowitz and his wife, Danielle. One day while in Hawaii, their son Isaiah had a meltdown (情绪失控) on the beach and Izzy tried to distract the boy by tossing him into the waves. Suddenly, the boy’s anger was replaced by smiles and wonder, and Surfers Healing was born. Each year, the foundation hosts 25 camps around the world serving more than 5,000 autistic children, ranging in age from 3 to 25. About half of the group participating recently was new to the sport.

Paskowitz said the ocean has a healing power on people with autism. The rhythm of the waves calms them, and the sounds, sights, textures and temperatures create such a sensory overload (负荷) that it forces the mind to focus. Many of the children arriving at the beach initially covered their ears from the crash of the waves, but gradually these sensitivities disappeared. One teen camper who traveled with her mom from Arizona wouldn’t get out of the car for more than an hour. Finally, she was coaxed (哄骗) to take a brief ten-minute ride in the knee-high waves on a body board. As she returned to shore, a volunteer awarded her a small trophy for participation.

1What was most probably the reason why Cary choked up?

A. He was proud that his son was a good surfer.

B. He achieved a small victory.

C. He took pride in his autistic son learning to take care of himself.

D. He was too surprised to see his autistic son button his own pants.

2Which of the following statements is true?

A. Ben has suffered from autism since he was six.

B. Around 150 people took part in the recent surfing event in Tourmaline Surf Park.

C. Autistic people usually range in age from 3 to 25.

D. Surfing is so stimulating to our senses that it forces autistic children to focus.

3How did Surfers Healing come into being?

A. It was initiated 20 years ago by a foundation.

B. A boy went crazy on the beach of Hawaii two decades ago.

C. Surfer Izzy Paskowitz and his wife realized the healing effects of surfing 20 years ago.

D. Surfer Izzy Paskowitz’s son was cured of autism by surfing two decades ago.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A. From Chaos to Peace   B. Surfing Washes Away Autism Symptoms

C. The Surfers’ Club   D. Transforming Powers of Surfing

24、A tiny Alaska village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.

More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat(栖息地) of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.

Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight (困境)of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.

The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011, said Jennifer Reed, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. "Today we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year," Reed said. Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife-viewing tours, said been offering polar bear tours since 2004. Most of his clients(客户) are from China and Europe, as well as from the lower 48 U. S. states. Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.
