21、We never knew what Walter was, but we called him an idiot (白痴). We called him that without knowing if he really was as foolish and as stupid as an idiot.

______________. She was interested in people no one else loved. When Grandmother learned about Walter, she told my mother she wanted Walter to bring the food to the house. Mother, of course, was strongly against it. She did not trust Walter. But Grandmother simply said, “Oh poor, you are 42 years old, Sarah.” And then she telephoned the people at the food store and told them to let Walter bring the food.

The first time, Walter came to the house, he told Grandmother he was going to get a girl. Grandmother told him how nice it would be. She said the trouble with young man today is that they do not know how to win a girl’s heart. “You must be honest”, she said. Walter just stood there and listened. Grandmother then told him how her husband won her heart.

Walter and Grandmother became close friends. Every time he came with food, she had a talk ready for him.

Later, she began to read books to Walter. The first book was called “How to dress when you go out with a girl?” The next book told how a young man should act when he meets the girl’s parents.

As time passed, Walter listened harder than before. He never took his eyes off Grandmother as she read. When she smiled, he smiled too. When she was serious, Walter became serious. She read about the problems of early friendship. “How to become better friends and how to decide your girl is the right one to marry.”

Grandmother was almost finished reading one day, when Walter stopped her.

“Mrs. Gorman, I have a girl, a girl like you always talking.”

“Isn’t that wonderful, tell me about her, is she nice?”

“I like her very much.”

“Well, she must be. What’s her name?”

“I forgot. I told her my name was Walter.”

“Would you be kind to her as a gentleman?”

“All the time, I told her the nice thing.”

“I am proud of you, Walter, is she pretty?”

Walter did not answer.

“She must be nice,” Grandmother said. “I hope you comb your hair and wear a coat when you see her. And you must promise me that you will always be a gentleman.”

After that, Grandmother read “How to Choose the Right Wedding Ring and How to be prepared for Marriage?” She seemed to be in a hurry as if Walter might get married before she had finished his education. The next book she read to Walter was “How to love your wife?” Soon after Grandmother finished reading it, she died.

The morning after she died, Mom telephoned the food store and told them not to send Walter any more.

Then one day, I saw him. He looked different. He was wearing a suit, the coat was old, and the trousers had been worn many times. He wore a white shirt and a tie. I waited until he walked up to me, and I walked along with him. “Hello, Walter, do you remember me?” He turned quickly toward me, then smiled as he recognized my face.

We walked a few steps in silence. Suddenly, I had the old feeling that Grandmother was still alive and Walter was still coming to the house. Without thinking, I asked “How is your girl, Walter?” Suddenly, he pulled me close to him and shouted “She is still alive! She is still alive!” His cry was loud and real. He pushed me away from him and I fell to the ground. He ran down the street. As I got off, I could still hear him crying until his voice was lost among the sounds of playing boys.

22、One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. Rubbish of all kinds is piling up in landfill and polluting our rivers and oceans. A more recent addition to the list of things we chuck away is e-waste— electronic items that are broken and not recycled. Now solutions are being found to give this stuff a new life.

Many millions of tonnes of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are discarded each year, partly because it’s cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them. A UN report claims the 50 million tonnes of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tonnes by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world.

However, there’s a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many found around the world. One of its volunteers, Francesco Calo, said that “This project allows you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault. ”

As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another idea is e-waste mining. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting these materials from electronic gadgets. It’s thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional mining. With phones typically containing as many as 60 elements, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.

These projects make total sense — collections of e-waste for recycling are “stagnating or even decreasing” according to Ruediger Kuehr, director of the United Nations University. And in countries where there is no legislation, much of it just gets dumped. However, the European Union, for example, is trying to tackle the problem by insisting manufacturers have to make appliances longer-lasting and will have to supply spare parts for machines for up to 10 years.

24、Since his students began using Quizlet, English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning App, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has word sets for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.

Thorne teachers at Columbia University in New York City. Thanks to learning Apps, Jeff Strack, another English teacher, has also notice improvement in his students’ ability to remember information. He teaches at Hostos Community College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile Apps to their classes.

Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use Apps, language learners communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.

Thorne believes that Apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabulary words into Quizlet for others to use. He says some Apps also make it easy for students to know their language strengths and weaknesses.

The biggest improvement Strack has seen in his students is that they are much more active in whole-class or small-group discussions. “Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it’s a game, quiz or practice activity.” he says.

Many existing learning Apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other Apps: QR Codes, Socrative and Evernote.
