二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The newly-elected president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro says that his country should withdraw (退出) from the 2015 Paris Agreement, and that Brazil’s rainforest protections are standing in the way of economic success. During the election campaign, he promised to ease protections for areas of the Brazilian Amazon set aside for native people and wildlife. Are Brazil’s rainforests in danger?

The Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, is called “the lungs of the planet.” Each tree takes in and stores carbon dioxide from the air around it. Billions of trees pull up water through their roots and release water vapor into the air, forming tiny drops of water. The Amazon creates 30 to 50 percent of its own rainfall. Carlos Nobre, a climate scientist, says that it is almost impossible to say Just how important the rainforest is to the planet’s living systems.

Some of Bolsonaro’s support comes from business and farming groups. One supporter, Luiz Carlos, noted that farmers “are not invaders, they are producers.” He blamed the past government for supporting rainforest protections at the cost of farmers. “Brazil,” he said, “will be the biggest farming nation on Earth during Bolsonaro’s years.”

Paulo Artaxo, a professor of environmental physics at the University of Sao Paulo, says that if Bolsonaro keeps his campaign promises, then “deforestation of the Amazon will probably increase quickly — and the effects will be felt everywhere on the planet.”

Other scientists warn that if the Amazon and other tropical rainforests lose too many trees, this could affect rainfall in other areas. Without enough trees to support the rainfall, the longer and bigger dry season could turn more than half of the rainforest into a tropical grassland.

22、While international travel is not an option due to the pandemic, Chinese tourists are still traveling within the country. Some people have an option for a more rural experience, though historic and natural wonders are still the priorities.

According to a recent report released by Chinese-owned Trip. com Group, one of the world's largest online travel agencies, rural tourism trips in China had increased year-on-year by more than 300 percent by March 2021.

Zhou Mingqi, founder and general manager of Shanghai Tour Guide Enterprise Management Consulting, said that Chinese people are tired of the hustle and bustle(喧嚣忙碌)of big cities and want to have unique experiences.

"There is a need to experience a different kind of life, like idyllic(田园诗般的)scenery or countryside life, to change a lifestyle on the weekend, " Zhou told CNN.

Wang Shang works for a Beijing-based company that helps organize countryside tours. She said that in one of the hotels she worked for, visitors can experience growing their own food, practice farming and learn about the region's traditional crafts and customs, CNN reported. Deng Yu, a 26-year-old tourist, likes the lifestyle very much. Working in big cities for several years, Deng told CGTN that rural trips help her not only "enjoy the landscape" but also "relieve stress by escaping the bustling city life and getting closer to nature."

Wang believes that experiencing a healthy lifestyle is another reason why city-dwellers travel to rural areas. Most of the visitors from cities are used to buying food in the supermarket. Sometimes they would worry about the food safety. But in rural areas, they can easily get healthy, fresh produce. Wang said that visitors from big cities come to buy flour, noodles, meat, eggs, honey and liquor, among other items.

The trend has also been pushed by Chinese internet influencers such as Li Ziqi, whose beautifully-shot videos of simple life in rural China have gained tens of millions of viewers.

To keep this boom going and attract more visitors, some rural areas are increasing their appeal.

"Nowadays· the rural areas in many places have indeed undergone major changes. Especially after renovating for tourism, it will become much more beautiful than in the past." Zhou told CNN.

24、   In the long dispute over whether dogs are smarter than cats, a recent study published in the journal Learning & Behavior suggests that dogs are no more exceptional than other animals when it comes to smartness and intelligence.

The news is sure to cause the debate among dog owners and scientists who study dog behaviors. The authors reviewed existing studies and data on animal cognition (认知) and found that while dogs are smart and trainable, they are not “super smart”, despite what most dog owners will tell you. Dog research was quite popular in the 1990s and continues to be so. When it came to other animals, though, scientific studies on intelligence were barely involved in, despite evidence to suggest that horses, chimpanzees ( 黑猩猩 ) and cats had tricks of their own. Almost everything a dog claimed to do, other animals could do too.

Researchers set out to test the supposition (假设,猜想). They compared dog cognition with members of three similar groups: meat-eating animals, social hunters and farm animals. Among the animals they studied were wolves, cats, chimpanzees, dolphins, horses and pigeons. What they found was that “dog cognition does not look exceptional”. Dogs can not use tools, unlike dolphins, New Caledonian crows and chimpanzees, which have been observed using plant stems to hunt for termites (白蚁). Homing pigeons are trained to fly home, sometimes crossing hundreds of miles of unfamiliar area. At the same time, farm animals share similar characters with their dog partners. Horses, like dogs, perform complex tasks. And cats? They have more in common with dogs than one might think. Still it is much easier to show intelligence in dogs because they like to be trained. Dogs are not smarter than they are supposed to be, given what they are.

1What opinion does the recent study hold about dogs?

A.They can be trained to do many things.

B.They don’t have any intelligent advantage.

C.They’re lazy compared with chimpanzees.

D.They show exceptional smartness when trained.

2How did the researchers conduct the study?

A.By referring to existing studies and data.

B.By comparing animals’ cognition ability.

C.By questionnaire surveys on dog owners.

D.By observing different animals’ behaviors.

3What do we infer about cats from the last paragraph?

A.Cats can use tools to fish.

B.Cats can go home from far away.

C.Cats can learn to do complex tasks.

D.Cats are more unwilling to be trained.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.Cats are smarter than they were.

B.Dogs aren’t so clever as we think.

C.Any animal is smart and trainable.

D.All animals should be treated equally.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.

Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.

By 1928, I'd been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. "Elzenia," I said. "I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write."

In 1938, one day my boss called me in. "George," he said. "No one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you." But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, "Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise." I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.

A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It's information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I'm 98. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.
