21、Today’s amazing newspaper headline: First family of four to walk to the South Pole wearing Mickey Mouse ears and clown’s shoes.
No, not really. It isn’t true. I invented it. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see it one day soon. In the last decade, I’ve seen headlines saying: “The youngest Briton to climb Qomolangma,” “The first person to cross the Pacific Ocean on a windsurfing board” and “The first people to fly around the world in a hot-air balloon”, Why do they do it? And why should I be interested anyway?
Human beings have already climbed the highest mountains, sailed across the oceans and flown around the world. People have already reached the most remote parts of our planet. There just isn’t anything left to explore nowadays. So, those who feel the need for adventure can only do things that haven’t been done before.
What is so great about climbing Qomolangma these days anyway? People pay thousands of dollars to be taken up the mountain by the local Sherpas, who lead the way and carry the bags. At any one time there are about a thousand people either climbing up or on their way back down. As a result, Qomolangma is covered with rubbish and the Sherpas have to make special trips up the mountain to pick it up. The climbers are often inexperienced and when they get into trouble other people have to risk their lives to bring them down to safety. Helicopter crews have been killed trying to reach people stuck on the mountain.
A British man became the first person to walk alone from Canada to the geographic North Pole. The problem was that he went in the spring, when the ice begins to melt and break up. So he got stuck on an isolated piece of ice and a plane had to be sent in to rescue him. It’s very difficult to land a plane on breaking ice and the people who risked their lives to do it weren’t very happy.
What do you think? Are these explorers heroes or a danger to other people? Examples of courage and determination which should inspire the rest of us? Or a waste of time, energy and money?

24、Living and dealing with kids can be a difficult job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even more complex.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important. With any relationship, you need to let other people know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart (疏远). When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking lo them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns of others. It means that you can't just come home from school, go up lo your room and ignore everyone. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication, even if it’s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.
This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t. She was late getting home. Her parents were mad al first, not giving Sophie a chance to explain why she was late. Later, they kept calm and listened to her. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.

A.Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to her.

C.Sophic did well in explaining her being late.
D.Sophie is very polite to her parents.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, a man and a young teenage boy checked in to a hotel and were kindly shown to their room. The two staff members noted the quiet manner of the guests, and the pale appearance of the boy, who didn’t look quite well. Later, the man and the boy ate dinner in the hotel restaurant. The staff again noticed that the two guests were very quiet and barely talked to each other, and that the boy seemed disinterested in his food. After eating, the boy went directly to his room and the man went to reception and asked to see the manager. The receptionist asked if there was a problem with the service or the room, and offered to fix things, but the man said that there was no problem of that kind, and repeated his request in a kind manner. The manager was called and duly appeared. The man asked to speak in private and was taken into the manager’s office.
The man explained that he was spending the night in the hotel with his 14-year-old son, who was diagnosed with cancer and thus was seriously ill, probably terminally so. He had gone through various treatments which were supposed to make him feel better. And he did, but his mood changed forever. He was not as happy as before and usually felt down. The boy was soon to receive chemotherapy (化疗), which would cause him to lose his hair. The father knew this was going to end badly for his son. In order to lift the boy's spirits, they had come to the hotel to have a break together, enjoying some father- and-son moments. The father continued that the boy needed to shave his head that night, which would probably give him unwanted attention. He would like his son to be strong, rather than feel that the illness was beating him. In the meantime, he also wanted to protect. his son’s dignity (尊严) and let him feel normal just as everyone else.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
