21、 Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits die hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries—in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus—obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

22、Deep beneath the frozen surface of the Arctic swims a whale with a spiral tusk (螺旋角) growing on its head — the narwhal (独角鲸). Biologists have long debated the purpose of male narwhals’ tusks. The tusks, like those of elephants, are actually thin long teeth. And since narwhals are usually below the sea ice, it’s tough to see how they use their tusks.
Zackary Graham, a graduate student in evolutionary biology from Arizona State University, wondered if the tusk was a sign showing the male’s position in the group. Comparing the tusk size to the whale’s overall body size could provide evidence.
“One of the main trends that have been documented in over 100 different animals is disproportionate (不成比例的) growth. We called that hyperallometry,” said Graham. So Graham and his team turned to measurements of the tusks collected from 250 adult male narwhals over 35 years. It turned out the length of the tusks can vary widely even for males the same size, ranging from a foot and a half to more than eight feet.
The top tusks thus appear to be like a billboard that shouts, “Look at me. I’m the biggest.” After all, only the strongest, best-fed individuals can afford to produce such a superb decoration. Of course, tusks can do more than just say, “Hey, how are you doing?”
According to the team, the male’s tusks are sexual signals used to scare off male competitors and attract females. This is because many sexual characteristics are highly sensitive to nutrients and body condition, so only the strongest individuals have the energy to produce the largest ones. “Overall, our evidence supports the assumption that the tusk functions as a symbol of status. However, further evaluations of the narwhal’s ecology are necessary,” Graham said.
【1】Why did Graham conduct the study?
A.To explore the living habits of narwhals.
B.To research the evolution of narwhals.
C.To figure out the male narwhals’ status.
D.To examine the function of narwhals’ tusks.

B.Surprised.
C.Questioning.
D.Humorous.
【4】What does Graham think of the story?

B.It requires more information.
C.It explores all potential factors.
D.It fails to prove his assumption.
23、As night falls on the streets of Shanghai, Mikiko Chen can often be found pacing up and down through the winding narrow streets of the city hunting for discarded items.
“I pick up all sorts of things, chairs, wine boxes, bowls and cups. . . it’s like treasure hunting for me, “she says. The 27-year-old digital marketer is among the first adopters of “stooping” in China, a practice that refers to picking up discarded furniture and other goods on the streets for re-use. She says the concept “stooping” was inspired by New Yorkers who often leave unwanted things on the “stoops” —or doorsteps—leading up to the entrances of buildings.
“The core concept of stooping for me is to make the best use of things,” Ms. Chen says. “It can help you to save money, but it’s not just about lowering consumption.” “It’s wasteful to throw away something that’s still usable; it’s better to share it with others who need it.”
Ms. Chen says she was among the first to use the hashtag (话题标签) #stooping on Xiaohongshu. “I initially started with posting items that people no longer used and wanted to throw away or exchange . . gradually I’m receiving hundreds of messages each day,” she says. Since then, the trend has become increasingly popular.
Ms. Chen says she is “very surprised” the concept has become a hit on social media, as older generations often stigmatize picking up things from the street or using second-hand goods. “People like my mum consider stooping as ‘rubbish picking’ and ‘scavenging’ (拾荒),” she says. “She thinks that people will look down on you for doing this.”
For Nan Zheng, an environmentalist and advocate, stooping is more than the physical act of picking up things from the streets. He created an app called “Grecycle” where people can give away or take unwanted items for free. “I think we can let more people know about the concept of stooping as an interesting and fun thing to do,” Mr. Nan says. “But then, gradually we can let people know this can also be about charity and helping others.”
【1】What can we learn about Mikiko Chen from paragraph 2 and 3?

24、While some Chinese specialists suggest abolishing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), foreign pharmaceutical (制药的) institutions and industries are pursuing them. Of the global herbal (药草的) medicine sales volume, the Chinese mainland accounts for only 2 percent and Japan has the lion’s share of the market, far ahead of other countries. More than 100 countries and regions around the world have set up TCM institutions, with the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea spending millions of dollars in research and developing medicine. The UK-based pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline announced its first TCM medicine research and development program, which targets not just the Chinese market, but the global one as well.
“TCM is a well-built medical science based on thousands of years of clinical practices. It shows great promise treating complicated conditions that the single-target Western medicine has failed to handle,” says Zang Jingwu, senior vice-president and head of GlaxoSmithKline’s R&D in China. “Our focus is to transform TCM from an experience-based practice to evidence-based medicines through innovation,” he says.
Currently, a 10-person team in Shanghai is in charge of the program. However, TCM is different from Western medicine, so great innovation is required to combine the two sciences. In fact, many in Western medicine circles have recognized the importance of TCM, but the problem is how to prove and develop that. TCM is developed through practical experience and improvement of herbs but many people in the West don’t trust that. TCM, particularly herbal products, are largely available in the US and Europe, but questions like how to prove their effectiveness in the context of Western medicine and how to best use them remain unanswered.
Zhang Lingping, director of the international cooperation department of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, welcomed the emerging trend. “Their increasing interest shows Western medicine circles have begun to learn about the time-honored medical science, which originated in China,” she says.

A.She kept her neutral attitude towards it.
B.She conveyed her recognition about it.

A.TCM Is Gaining Global Popularity.

C.TCM Has More Advantages over Western Medicine.
D.TCM’s Effectiveness Is Being Testified.
