二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、New Year’s resolutions are usually like some of those promises that are meant to be broken. The word “New” in the new year, puts a lot of pressure on starting over and turning a new leaf. But you must remember you cannot just become a different person overnight when the clock strikes twelve. 【1】. Instead of making resolutions that cause you stress, anxiety or more pain, set out this year by making resolutions that will encourage self-care.

To start fresh this New Year’s Day, here are a few tips setting realistic new year’s resolutions in order to avoid the burden of disappointment next year.

Choose a very specific goal

Vague plans like “lose weight”, “exercise more” or “write more” are goals with no teeth. They are vague plans and desires, and are very easy to explain away due to how vague they are. 【2】. Such goals with a certain task weight-age, are much more doable than vague goals.

【3】.

Once you have chosen your goals, make a very detailed plan of how you will reach that goal. Having a plan and a pathway can help you visualize your progress and won’t make you impatient for immediate results. That way you will have already visualized what progress would look like for you in say, 3 months, 5 months, 7 months or every day depending on your goals.

Get yourself a social tribe

In today’s social media world, it is easy to find a group of like-minded individuals interested in sharing your goal. Get yourself a social group like this. However, just as there is a bright side to having a social tribe, the pitfall (隐患) is the pressure. Don’t get consumed by social media and what others are doing. 【4】.

Accept failure and forgive yourself

【5】. Accept this failure; own it and forgive yourself. Being harsh on yourself will only do you more harm so instead learn from what went wrong and instead of quitting the resolution at the end of next year, see it through until you reach your goal.

A.Make a pathway to reach that goal

B.Be patient with your progress

C.Instead, set goals like “exercise 20 minutes every day” or “lose 15 pounds”

D.Despite all your efforts, it is possible that you might fail or slip up

E.Therefore, new year’s resolutions usually end up in failure

F.Change is a difficult process — the key words being “difficult” and “process”

G.Remember you have this group only for support, not for comparison

22、   If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, historic buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL)(世界遗产名录). But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let's look at a few of them.

Robben Island in South Africa

This island was used through the centuries as a prison, hospital and military base. But it's probably most famous as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents 'the triumph of democracy(民主))and freedom over oppression and racism'.

Borders of France and Spain

This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe in the 17th century but that has almost completely disappeared in modern times.

The city of Brasilia, Brazil

Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it 'a landmark in the history of town planning'. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planners and architects.

Simien National Park, Ethiopia

Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. It is one of the highest mountain areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it 'one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world'. It is also important for its wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.

1Which of the following sites was listed on the WHL for its political symbol?

A.Robben Island in South Africa. B.The city of Brasilia, Brazil.

C.Borders of France and Spain. D.Simien National Park, Ethiopia.

2The WHL has listed Borders of France and Spain probably because____.

A.people there still use a type of agriculture that is common in Europe in modern times

B.this is an area of great natural beauty

C.the mountains there have many interesting geological formations

D.it shows us past European society by the type of agriculture

3Which of the following sites is famous for the wonderful plan of buildings?

A.Robben Island in South Africa. B.Borders of France and Spain.

C.The city of Brasilia, Brazil D.Simien National Park, Ethiopia.

4The passage mainly talks about____.

A.the remains of ancient cultures on the WHL

B.some of the less well-known sites on the WHL

C.the household heritage sites on the WHL

D.important places of art and culture

23、   Beijing will provide COVID-19 vaccinations(接种疫苗)for certain groups in nursing homes, including the elderly and caregivers, on a voluntary basis to prevent a renewed outbreak at nursing homes during autumn and winter, the local government said.

Those who will receive the vaccines include nursing home kitchen workers, security guards and cleaners. Beijing Daily reported on Friday.

As to vaccinations, she said they will ask for permission from residents, their family members and workers before giving vaccines.

In late October,Shaoxing,Zhejiang province carried out an emergencyCOVTD-19 vaccine program, allowing the public to ask for injections(注射)in advance, with key groups first. A similar program was also organized in Jiaxing,Ningbo and Yiwu in Zhejiang.

Nationwide, emergency use of home grown COVID-19 vaccines was approved in June and launched in late July. China now has four coronavirus candidate vaccines in the third stage clinical trials(临床试验).

The document from Beijing also said nursing homes should conduct nucleic acid testing(核酸检测) every month among kitchen workers and residents who leave the nursing homes to see a doctor. Tests will cover all people in nursing homes considered at high risk if new infections are reported in the city. Besides, routine disinfections (消毒) should be strengthened in kitchens, storerooms and restrooms, it said. The document also recommended noncontact visits from family members.

24、The healthy adolescent boy or girl likes to do the real things in life,to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumber’s mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics(流体静力学)sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be.A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care.Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is probably why the experts enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way---nor,in my view, the best way.The adolescent wants to do things first for only then does the appreciate the problems involved and want to learn more about them.

They do these things better in primitive life, for there at puberty(青春期) the boy joins his father in making canoes, patching huts, going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship in the actual accomplishments of life.It is not surprising that anthropologists(人类学家) find that the adolescents of primitive communities do not suffer from the same neurotic(神经质的) “difficulties” as those of civilized life. This is not,as some assume, because they are permitted more sexual freedom, but because they are given more natural outlets for their native interests and powers and are allowed to grow up freely into a full life of responsibility in the community.

In the 19th century this was recognized in the apprenticeship system, which allowed the boy to go out with the master carpenter,or ploughman,to engage in the actual work of carpentry or roof-mending,and so to learn his trade. In some agricultural colleges at the present time young men have to do a year’s work on a farm before their theoretical training at college. The great advantage of this system is that it lets the apprentice see the practical problems before he sets to work learning how to solve them, and he can therefore take a more intelligent interest in his theoretical work.

Since more knowledge of more things is now required in order to cope with the adult world, the period of growing-up to independence takes much longer than it did in more primitive community, and the responsibility for such education, which formerly was in the hands of the parents,is now necessarily undertaken by experts at school. But that should not make us lose sight of the basic principle, namely the need and the desire of the adolescent to engage responsibly in the real pursuits of life and then to learn how—to learn through responsibility, not to learn before responsibility.

1According to the author, what is the natural way of education?

A. Doing things while learning.   B. Doing things before learning.

C. Doing things as an apprentice.   D. Learning practical knowledge first.

2The main advantage of the natural way of education, whether in primitive or modern times,is that learners   .

A. can learn the trade through solving problems at work

B. can work with their masters throughout their learning

C. are given opportunities to develop their interest first

D. are given more freedom in doing things and learning

3According to context,“this” in the third paragraph refers to ________.

A. the kind of skills boys learned from their father

B. the difficulties modern adolescents experience

C. the amount of freedom in learning in primitive life

D. the way of learning in primitive communities

4Which of the following sums up the author’s main point?

A. The apprenticeship system was effective in learning.

B. Learning to solve problems is learning through responsibility.

C. Students develop their interest through learning.

D. Students should be given more freedom in learning.
