21、So called “never-marrieds” are one of the fastest-growing groups in America, according to the US Census Bureau. More than 40 percent of the adult population are singles, and 10 percent of all adults will never marry, according to the recent statistics. In less than 30 years, the number of people who have never walked down the aisle(通道) has more than doubled, as the average age of marriage has reached a historic high: 25 years for women, and 27 years for men.
Why is America becoming more and more a nation of singles? “People are being more demanding. It’s a soul mate(配偶) or nothing, when a generation ago, less than half the people said something similar to that,” relationship expert Laura Berman told Good Morning America.
A recent Rutgers University study found 94 percent of people between the age of 20 and 29 agreed to the statement: “When you marry, you want your partner to be your soul mate, first and foremost(最重要的).”
In addition to that, modern women are able to support themselves, and do not need men for their money, Berman said. Some are buying homes for themselves. “They need a man for improving their lives, but not for creating them.” she said. Gillian Thomas, a 33-year-old lawyer in Philadelphia, is part of the growing group. Attractive and successful, she has simply not found the right person to marry, and sees no reason to settle for less. “I feel internal(内部的) pressure to find a soul mate and I think we all do,” Thomas says. “I don’t think it’s just women. I think that in this sort of post-feminist(后女权主义) generation we all feel like we can have it all.”
Singles often depend on a “family” of friends, who do everything from helping to paint each other’s apartments to taking vacations together, said freelance(自由职业) writer Ethan Watters, a single 37-year-old.
He has maned these groups “urban tribes”, and is writing a book on the subject. But only the name is new.
The comfort of these “urban tribes” may delay marriage, but they don’t rule marriage out. Indeed, there may be some good news for those who wait, Watters says. As the average age of marriage has risen, statistics say that divorce rates have leveled off. Could the urban tribes be on to something?

22、I was in Chicago for a job training when I knew a nearby theatre was releasing a film about saving dogs. I love animals and this fundraising event sounded right up my alley. However, none of my co-workers could squeeze time for me. I got cold feet for anxiety about navigating the streets by myself at night alone.
But in my hotel room I felt restless and bored. The theatre was only about five blocks away from the hotel. How could I stray? Hence, I decided to brave it. I gathered my room key and set off.
I managed to find the street of the theatre but when I turned the corner I stopped in shock. The street in front of the theatre was full of bikers-lots of very big, tough-looking bikers.
Now I was a woman all alone at night. There were many large men, all wearing insignia suggesting they were in some sort of club or gang. Warning bells began to sound and my heart jumped in my throat. Was I at the right theatre? Had I misread the date of the event?
I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theatre where there was, presumably, a crowd of people. I scurried into the theatre. As I sat there, heart racing, waiting for the film to start, I muttered a prayer to contain my anxieties. A local blues-rock band was the opening act and their performance drew my attention. Enthusiasm for the band’s performance soon took away all my worries from my mind and I began to relax.
After the band, the film began and I understood the presence of the bikers after a conversation with the staff. Being part of an animal rescue group, they had escorted dogs from New Jersey to Chicago. At that moment, I was struck by the bond that had drawn so many disparate folks to the theatre. Singers, sportsmen, ordinary workers had all been brought together by our shared love of animals. I made new friends. I discovered a new band and supported an important cause. I stayed till the very end and made it to my hotel without any incident, overjoyed that I broke out of the boundary I used to set for myself and ventured into the unknown. To my amazement, the reward was one of the best nights of my life.

23、It's “Baby Day” at the Riverpark seniors’ home in Ottawa—a twice-monthly event Eulah Johnson, 90, never misses. “I really enjoy it. It's a shift from the regular routine,” says the retired nurse.
Today, Johnson sits on a sofa and looks at a laughing child perched on the seat of her walker. After a few moments, the girl skips off to play with the dozen or so other small children and babies mixed with 20 of Johnson's fellow residents.
Some, like 12-month-old Owen, are regular visitors to Ottawa seniors' homes. “We've been doing this since he was three months old,” says his mother, Allison Rodgers, 33.
She loves the social calls, too. “I didn't have grandparents while growing up. It's nice to spend time with older people, and it feels good to know they're betting so much out of it.”
Babies Who Volunteer, the initiative bringing these generations together, is the inspired idea of Jessica Turner, a former educational assistant. The idea came about during a March 2018 visit with her 22-month-old daughter Amelia to a friend's mother, who was living in a long-term-care unit. She was most surprised by the response of her friend's mother; she hadn't spoken in two years, but with Amelia in her lap, she began singing. Turner went home and immediately put out a call on a mums' Facebook group: Would anyone be interested in dropping by seniors' residences with their babies?
A year later, there are now 1,500 volunteers, and the organization visits 39 homes in Ottawa. Everyone benefits from intergenerational programmes, she says. “This playgroup is good for the mothers, too. They're giving something to the community, which provides a sense of purpose and belonging. It can really help someone who is feeling isolated.”
