21、Over a decade ago, when Francesco Galietti had to travel from Rome(罗马)to Milan (米兰)for work, he used to fly the nearly 400—mile distance. Today, he takes the train.
Galietti, CEO of a Rome—based company, is not alone. Over two thirds of people traveling between Rome and Milan now take the train. It takes as little as 2 hours and 49 minutes. And, of course, the train stations are in the city center, so there’s no need to turn up long before your train—the doors close two minutes before departure. “Think about a half—hour drive to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, checking in 90 minutes before flying, an hour in the air and then landing outside Linate Airport of Milan, the closest, and then about 20 minutes’ drive into town—well, I’d prefer not to bother so much,” said Galietti.
Today’s high—speed railway system is a far cry from the railway network of Italy’s past, when trains were slow, outdated and usually late. Now Italy is the only country in the world to have two high—speed train operators. Trenitalia, the state operator, has its Frecce trains running roughly in a T shape from the north to the south across the country. Meanwhile, Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, a private company which runs its Italo trains, covers 54 cities a day. Italy is also home to the world’s first high—speed freight(货运)service.
Besides the above reasons, natural scientists think it “correct” to choose trains. “I feel it a duty—the train is one of the most reliable(可靠的)ways to reduce your carbon footprint,” said Carlo Barbante, the director of the Institute of Polar Sciences in Venice.
These are why Alitalia, Italy’s national airline, was killed. As Alitalia flights took off for the last time on October 14. the two leading competitors—the Frecce and Italo trains—are going from strength to strength.
【1】Why does Galietti choose not to fly to Milan?

22、 OTTAWA—After leaving suddenly almost twenty years ago, fans of one Italian car brand (品牌) have been crying. “Oh, Alfa Romeo, where are you?” But with the arrival of the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C sports car this year, parent Fiat’s sportiest brand is back in business in Canada. The question is: Will anybody care?
Although it hasn’t sold a new car in Canada since 1995, the Alfa Romeo brand is one of the oldest in the car industry. It was founded in 1910. It quickly became well-known for making fast, beautiful and expensive sports cars. An Italian state-holding company took over in the early 1930s, but since 1986, the Alfa brand has been owned by Fiat.
Unfortunately, Alfa Romeo met fresh competition from Japan. By the mid-1990s, Alfa’s lone North American offerings were the Spider roadster (单排座敞篷轿车).
Many Alfa fans will tell you the brand’s success is on the racetracks (赛车场). Dating back to 1913, Alfa Romeo has always had a strong factory presence in racing. But since the late-1980s the Italian automaker has become less involved in car races.
While Alfa Romeo has shot a few videos of its new mid-engine, two-seat 4C on a racetrack. there are no plans for the car maker to get back into racing.
One of the biggest attractions for Toronto Alfa Romeo fan Vytas Svedas is the brand’s racing past. He currently takes part in many races with his father with a 1966 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT, and he thinks if Alfa wants to be taken seriously as it returns to selling cars in Canada, it has to get back on the racetrack.
Of course, not all Alfa fans need a racetrack to enjoy their cars. David Semel is the president of the Alfa Romeo Club of Ottawa. Semel’s current ride is a 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia SS. And, he admits, the main attraction of the Giulia SS is the way the car looks, not how fast it can go.
【1】What do we know about Alfa Romeo?
A. It is quite affordable for the common people.
B. It is a brand of a state-holding company.
C. It has a history of about a century.
D. It entered Canada in 1995.
【2】Why did Alfa Romeo lose its Canadian market?
A. Because the Canadians lost interest in sports cars.
B. Because there were fewer car races held in Canada.
C. Because it faced very strong competition from Japan.
D. Because its quality couldn’t meet the local buyers needs.
【3】What’s Wytas Svedas’s attitude towards Alfa Romeo s not getting back into racing?
A. Understanding. B. Unconcerned.
C. Pleased. D. Disappointed.
【4】According to David Semel, Alfa Romeo ________.
A. will return to racing sooner or later
B. has other advantages besides speed
C. is not necessarily the fastest car
D. is losing lots of its fans
23、Toothpaste (牙膏) tubes with remaining contents have been a headache for many of us. But not, perhaps, for much longer.
In 2012, Kripa Varanasi, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Dave Smith, his PhD student, set up a company called LiquiGlide to produce toothpaste tubes with super-smooth surfaces that promise to deliver every last bit of their contents.
Mibelle Group, a Swiss producer of expensive health-care and beauty products, is the first company to employ the technology to lessen the amount of material left stuck to the insides of containers in its factories when it is time for a clean-up. Now Colgate Palmolive, an American company, has used LiquiGlide's technology for its new toothpaste, called Elixir, which has gone on sale in Europe, though no decision has yet been made about whether it will be applied to other cheaper products.
To produce their slippery containers, Dr. Varanasi and Dr. Smith first carved special patterns and then apply a special liquid to fill the gaps and create super-slippery surfaces on the inner surfaces.
Besides pleasing customers who like to get their money's worth, the new toothpaste tubes can help with recycling. Existing tubes are rarely recycled, not only because they have toothpaste left inside them but also because they are usually made from plastic. Mixed materials of this sort are hard to recycle, and therefore end up being dumped in landfill, or burned.
Despite their latest success with toothpaste, Dr. Varanasi and Dr. Smith have not given up on food products such as yogurt and cheese which usually come in plastic containers. So far, cheaper consumer product makers have not accepted the idea. But the health and beauty industry, where products tend to be more expensive, is interested.
【1】What can be inferred about Elixir?
A.It cannot be held in normal tubes.
B.It is relatively expensive.
C.It will be on sale in China soon.
D.It can effectively beautify kids' teeth.
【2】What does the underlined word “slippery” in paragraph4 mean?
A.Rough.
B.Soft.
C.Smooth.
D.Hard.
【3】Which is LiquiGlide's latest marketing success?
A.Beauty industry.
B.Fast food industry.
C.Bottled water industry.
D.Toothpaste industry.
【4】What should be done to help the tube enter more consumer product markets?
A.Lowering the costs.
B.Improving its recyclability.
C.Increasing quantity.
D.Spending more on advertisements.
24、 Are you one of the millions of people that start shopping for Halloween before school even starts? Insights from a study stated that more than a third of consumers will start buying Halloween products in September or earlier.
According to the survey, the majority of shoppers planned to purchase Halloween items from discount ,specialty, and department stores. Others take inspiration from an online search starting as early as August in some cases. This is good news for stores who get to reap the profits, though.
Roberta Gleicher, a district manager, said as a customer, she finds it annoying that stores put out decorations in August — but as a business consultant (顾问), she recommends they do so. “Stores try to keep customers in there as long as possible because the more time they spend, the more they will shop and buy. Once they, re shopping, they see holiday decorations and get in the holiday spirit,“ Gleicher says. This is true for women, especially, Gleicher noted. Women tend to take their time, look around, and compare price - whereas men buy and get out, she added.
“The store wants the customer to associate buying decorations. They want customers to think, 'Oh yeah, this store has decorations, let's shop there,'” Gleicher says. "And if they do the displays well enough, it will encourage shoppers to make impulse purchases.
Another reason why stores display howling ghouls (食尸鬼) in the summer heat is out of pure competition. Stores don't have a choice because it's almost guaranteed that competitors will get the buck. Once shoppers buy a product, they've bought it — and don't need to go elsewhere, Gleicher said.
“If more competitors keep pushing it earlier and earlier, it could end up starting in July," Gleicher says. "The longer they can extend the season, the better it is for their sales.”
【1】What can we learn from the survey?
A.Some consumers purchase Halloween items early.
B.The majority of customers prefer shopping online.
C.Customers purchase Halloween products only for discount.
D.A few shoppers buy Halloween items from department stores.
【2】Why does Roberta Gleicher recommend stores put out decorations in August?
A.To help customers get relaxed.
B.To compete with other online stores.
C.To attract women to buy more holiday decorations.
D.To get customers in the holiday atmosphere and buy products.
【3】Which of the following will Roberta Gleicher most probably agree with?
A.More competitors extend Halloween from August.
B.Stores display decorations early due to competition.
C.Decorations will encourage men to make impulse purchases.
D.Shoppers definitely won't go elsewhere once they buy a product.
【4】Where is the text most probably taken from?
