二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Halloween is a holiday full of tricks and treats and all things frightening and fun. But what happens when you trade your sweets for a scare? The result is always healthier than candy.

Being frightened can be good for you. Think about your favorite scary books or movies. You are scared but you just can't resist reading or watching them. Being frightened makes your brain flood with healthy chemical substances that excite your mood and release feelings of great excitement.

When you are frightened, your body also produces a chemical called oxytocin, which helps people bond with one another. So, if you're at a haunted(闹鬼的) house with some pals, that experience can help solidify your friendship. "Watch people walking out of a haunted house, and you'll see lots of smiles and high fives." says Dr.Marge Kerr, a sociologist who studies fear.

There is also some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations. Things like a presentation in front of your class or performing in a school play can make us fearful and anxious. But these experiences help build a sort of endurance to fear that makes us more confident. "You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you're better able to work through it during these situations."Kerr explains.

Though some haunting may be healthy, it's important to remember that people experience fear in different ways. What may be fun for one person could be too scary for another. And Kerr notes that kids younger than six or seven can't separate reality and make-believe, so seeing something frightening could have lasting, negative effects.

1Why does the author mention"Halloween"in Paragraph 1?

A.To make a suggestion. B.To introduce a topic.

C.To offer an instruction. D.To present a report.

2How is the text developed?

A.By analyzing reasons. B.By providing statistics.

C.By making comparisons. D.By giving examples.

3What can we learn from the text?

A.We'll feel worried if we're scared.

B.Being frightened helps people stay closer.

C.Fearfulness controls our confidence.

D.Being scared can be good for everyone.

23、   The first time I went to a playground in Berlin, I was surprised. All the German parents were huddled together, drinking coffee, not paying attention to their children who were hanging off a wooden dragon 20 feet above a sand pit. Contrary to stereotypes(模式化观念)most German parents I’ve met are the opposite of strict.1. Those parents at the park weren’t ignoring their children; they were trusting them. Here are a few surprising things Berlin ’s parents do:

Don't push reading. Berlin ’s kindergartens don’t emphasize academics. In fact, teachers and other parents discouraged me from teaching my children to read.2. But even in first grade, academics aren’t pushed very hard. Our grade school provides a half-day of instruction interrupted by two outdoor breaks.

3  A note came home from school along with my excited second grader. They were doing a project on fire. Would I let her light candles and perform experiments with. matches? Together we lit candles and burned things, safely. It was brilliant.

Let children go almost everywhere alone. Most grade school kids walk without their parents to school and around their neighborhoods. Some even take the subway alone.4of course, but they usually focus on traffic.not abductions(绑架).

Take the kids outside every day. According to a German saying, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”The value of outside time is promoted in the schools.5No matter how cold and grey it gets, and in Berlin it gets pretty cold, parents still bundle their kids up and take them to the park, or send them out on their own.

A.Encourage kids to play with fire

B.Inspire children to go out for leisure

C.German parents are concerned about safety

D.It's also obvious on Berlin ' s numerous playgrounds

E.Kindergarten was a time for play and social learning

F.They place a high value on independence and responsibility

G.I was told it was something special that the kids learn together when they start grade school

24、   Nature is the best laboratory for learning about nature. For ten years, every student at Wadsworth Middle School has been looking forward to his or her turn to attend a three-day science camp. 1 Science camp is important to the students, and we must raise the money necessary to save it.

Without science camp, students will miss out on a unique learning experience. In science class, they learn to identify rocks by picking them up out of a box. 2 Science camp also lets students experiment with different forms of energy. For example, students get to build miniature (微型的) steam engines that are powered by campfires. They also make solar panels that heat camp water. These experiences would be tough to create in a classroom.

Science camp is for everybody, and it won’t be saved unless everybody helps raise money for it. To get started, Principal Jeffries and the student council could set up a “science camp fund (资金)” at a local bank. Every year, science camp costs $3,000. 3

Some people say it’s too much work to save science camp, but the fact is that if we all help out, we can reach our goal easily. 4 For example, we could hold a talent auction (拍卖). By washing cars, babysitting, or using other talents, students can meet the goal. We could also hold a bake sale. Students could even ask local businesses to sponsor them.

5 If we all work together, we’ll easily raise the money to save it.

A.Students can raise money in many ways.

B.Now it might be canceled because of budget cuts.

C.They investigate the world through hands-on science.

D.Science camp is perfect for creative and curious ones.

E.Science camp is a great tradition that deserves to be saved.

F.That sounds expensive, but if every student raises just $10, the fund would be filled.

G.At science camp, they learn to identify rocks by finding them in mountain sides or river beds.
