21、 You might have heard about identity theft: it’s what can happen when a thief gets enough of someone’s information to commit fraud (诈骗). Why should people care about it? Because recovering a stolen identity can be a time- consuming and expensive process. Imagine that someone pretends to be you: they use your name; they even convince businesses that they’re you and they open a credit card in your name, get a cell phone in your name, or buy things using a credit card that has your name on it.
ID thieves can be creative about getting your information. There are some low-tech ways they get it: sometimes they steal garbage, going through it to find personal information, or they steal mail.
There are high-tech ways, too: ID thieves might put software onto your computer without you knowing it — it can happen when you open an email attachment, click on a pop-up(弹出窗口)advertisement, or download some music files. Some software lets a thief see everything on your computer, and record everything you type on your computer.
Unfortunately, even if you’re really careful with your personal information, thieves can still get it. Sometimes, they hack(入侵)into computer systems at stores or schools, hospitals or businesses. They look for personal information to use or sell to other thieves.
It’s pretty easy for you and your family to make it harder for a thief to steal your identity. You can start with the low-tech defenses: being careful with your mail and garbage. Tear anything that has personal information on it before you throw it away. And be sure to take care with your purse, your wallet, or your backpack.
Practice some routine higher-tech defensive plays, too: protect your computer by installing (安装 ) and turning on an up-to-date firewall along with anti-spyware and anti-virus software. Once you are online, be careful you’re your personal information. Some sites might ask for a credit card number, stop and check if they really need that number. When you get email or pop-ups on your computer, don’t respond automatically. Emails that ask you to reply or click a link could be thieves trying to trick you into giving them your personal information. It’s a technique called “phishing”, because the thieves are fishing for your information. Stop and think before you click.

22、A scientist turned out to be able to see the future by offering each of some four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she dealt with it. Some children reached eagerly for the candy they saw. Some lasted a few minutes before they gave in. But others were determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reached high school, something amazing had happened. A survey found that those who were four-year-olds having enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily upset and inflexible.
Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant (有抵抗力的) soul.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as "characters".
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together and how one’s ability handles stress, for instance, affecting the ability to concentrate and putting intelligence to use. Among the ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now gradually agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues are finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
【1】Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text?
A.To make the readers amused.
B.To prove the scientists’ wisdom.
C.To introduce the topic of the text.
D.To show us how to do an IQ test.

23、Dear Audrey,
You are much older now, and hopefully wiser, although sometimes that’s not the case. You have probably forgotten about me.
I’m 12-year-old you struggling with anxiety, hating online learning, in this terrible Coronavirus(冠状病毒).
I’m writing a letter to you that I hope you read every year on New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve.
I’ve come from 2020 to remind you not to forget. I am sitting on my bed right now, tears still on my face from a fight with my mom (I love her more than anything or anyone, but we’ve spent too much time together), and looking at the light blue masks hanging on the hooks next to the door in my kitchen. In a way, it still feels like March, when this whole crazy thing started. I’m sick of it.
I am begging you to remember. I didn’t get to spend Thanksgiving with my beloved grandparents, when I’d been waiting so long to act normally with them. Now, it looks like I won’t be spending Christmas with them normally either. In America (where I live), the Coronavirus numbers are higher than they’ve ever been. I am hoping and am going to pray for a Christmas miracle, but I have my doubts because I hoped for an Easter miracle and that didn’t happen.
I am struggling and would do anything to get out of 2020 and this Coronavirus, to see my friends and family normally. You are able to do that. You have what I want so badly. So please, I urge you to enjoy your life, your friends, your family, your experiences.
Remember — everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matters in this modern-day world.
Love your life, and be filled with joy this year.
Sincerely,
You, aged 12, Audrey in 2020, the Pandemic Year.

24、During my second year in high school, I got sick and missed a few days. When I returned, I was greeted with two essays due (到期的), three days of math and history homework, plus several tests. The next day at school, I got a rude awakening: I’d totally forgotten to prepare for the test on Romeo and Juliet! Worse still, I had missed the in-class discussion and all the notes. When lunch time came, I went to the English room to face my certain doom (厄运). All I could do was try to guess at the questions I didn’t know.
As it turned out, I didn’t know the majority of the questions. I was just about to give in when my pencil accidentally fell and broke. Standing by the blackboard and sharpening my pencil, I looked down and there in full view lay the answer sheet for the test! What good fortune! I can kiss good-bye to all my worries of failing the test! My heart started beating, and my brain whispered, “Yes! Read over the answers — quickly!” This was quickly followed by another voice, “No! You’ll get caught!” My mind turning back and forth, “Yes! No! Yes! No!” …This went on for ten of the longest seconds in my entire life.
Finally, I decided to finish the test on my own, without cheating! I was satisfied with my decision but pretty certain I had failed the test.
The next day when I walked into the English room, my great joy of having been an honest soul changed into a wave of doom as I saw my test paper lying face down on my desk. I knew what awaited me. I stared at it for a few seconds before I got up the nerve to turn it over.
You can only imagine my shock when I learned that I had passed the test! I have never in my whole life been so happy to see my grade a C-.
My mom says the victories that take the most courage are won within. Now I know exactly what she means. Now not only can my conscience (良心) rest easy, but I don’t have to worry about getting caught and meeting a sad ending like Romeo and Juliet.
