二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Since I was born and brought up in a rural town, I have a great interest in nature. Using the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there. So after I finished the study, I went to Yellowknife in the Northwest. I clearly remember the sixth night in Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p. m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.

The northern lights were flickering (闪烁)in the sky! I was amazed and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.

Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that my hands and feet were numb with cold. Actually, the time of my being able to be out was limited. I had to bring her camera back to the house in one hour at the most, for the camera was going to be broken because of the cold temperature.

As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they gradually come down to the south. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.

The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger northern lights flicker in the sky. That’s because they occur from the collision(碰撞)between atmospheric gases and solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, leading to the best northern lights.

【1】Why did the author forget to take pictures?

A.It was freezing cold outside.

B.He was shocked by the wonderful sights.

C.The lights were flickering in the sky.

D.He lost all his feeling in his hands and feet.

【2】What can we infer from the passage?

【3】When is the best time to see the northern lights?

A.They appear in the north part of the sky.

B.They rise in the east and set in the west.

C.They are between the north and south.

D.They come down to the south part of the sky.

【4】Why is it hard for the author to take good pictures?

A.The lights stay in the middle for a very short time.

B.The lights of the sun affect the northern lights.

C.The lights are caused by the collisions of gases.

D.The colours of the lights are determined by the height.

Children who read for pleasure at the age of 10 have far higher vocabulary scores by the age of 42.

Researchers at the Institute of Education(IOE)have found that the most crazy childhood readers score far higher on vocabulary tests 30 years later. The new study suggests that children who read for pleasure carry the intellectual(智力的)benefits with them far into adulthood.

“The long-term influence of reading for pleasure on vocabulary that we have identified may be because the frequent childhood readers continued to read throughout their twenties and thirties,”says lead author Professor Alice Sullivan at the IOE.Researchers followed 9,400 British people from the age of 10 up to 42.Their vocabulary was tested using a simple quiz which asked participants to match up words to the most similar meaning.

Those who had regularly read for pleasure at 10 scored 67 percent at the age of 42,while infrequent childhood readers scored only 51 percent.

The IOE study also found that what people chose to read as adults mattered as much as how often they read. The greatest improvements between ages 16 and 42 were made by readers of ‘elegant’ fictions such as Booker Prize winning novels. And they found that readers of quality newspapers, including online versions, made more progress in vocabulary throughout their lives than those who read tabloids.

In addition, generally speaking, the adult readers who especially read broadsheets(宽幅印刷品)scored 76 percent on the assessment compared to 57 percent amongst those who didn’t.

【1】Why did frequent childhood readers have higher vocabulary scores?

A.Because they are born intelligent.

B.Because they formed the consistent reading habit.

C.Because they were crazy about pleasure.

D.Because they had a comfortable childhood.

【2】What may not affect the adult readers’ vocabulary scores?

A.The contents of reading.

B.The design of the page.

C.Versions online or not.

D.The frequency of reading.

【3】What does the underlined word“tabloids”mean in the text?

A.Newspapers of low quality.

B.Newspapers of high quality.

C.Elegant fictions.

D.Large vocabulary.

【4】What does the text mainly tell us?

A.Intelligence has a great influence on vocabulary.

B.Reading materials matter much for children.

C.Broadsheet newspapers are best for boosting vocabulary.

D.Children who read for pleasure have larger vocabulary when they grow up.

24、A new United Nations scientific report says that human-caused climate change is greatly reducing land quality worldwide. It warns that the way humans use land is causing the earth's atmosphere to warm faster and could harm food production. The effects of climate change are already making food more costly and less nutritious (有营养的) and are worsening food shortages (缺乏).

The scientists write that if humans change the way they eat, grow food and manage forests, it could help slow world temperature rises.

About 30 percent of the earth's surface is land. But the report says that the land is warming two times faster than the planet as a whole. While heat-trapping (吸热的) gases are causing problems in the atmosphere, land has been less talked about as a part of climate change.

“The change could be worse,” the report says. Agriculture and forestry together account for about 23 percent of the heat-trapping gases that are warming the earth. That does not include energy costs, food transportation and packaging. With those activities added, the amount grows to 37 percent.

But land can absorb heat trapping gases out of the air. From 2009 to 2018, for example, agriculture and forestry each year put 5.2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air. But the land pulled 11.2 billion metric tons out of it. Carbon dioxide is a main heat trapping gas.

Scientists have long believed that one of the few good things about higher levels of carbon dioxide is that plants grow well in such conditions. But many studies show that the high levels of carbon dioxide can reduce protein (蛋白质) and nutrients in many crops.

The report also suggests ways that carbon emissions could be reduced further. This could be done if humans reduce the amount of red meat they eat and instead eat more fruit, vegetables and seeds. That would also make people healthier.

【1】What has not been paid much attention to in the study of climate change?

A.Greenhouse gases.

B.Land.

C.The earth's surface.

D.People's lifestyles.

【2】How does the land function in global warming?

A.It takes in a lot of carbon dioxide.

B.It produces grains less nutritious.

C.It causes the majority of heat-trapping gases.

D.It sends off more carbon dioxide than it removes.

【3】What is suggested to fight against global warning?

A.Growing plants to absorb carbon dioxide.

B.Planting high quality crops.

C.Limiting red meat intake.

D.Producing enough food.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Humans should live a healthy life.

B.Global warming is more and more serious.

C.There will be a food shortage in the future.

D.Climate change affects land quality and food production.
