21、For every cup of coffee you made, about two spoons of grounds end up in the waste. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but just think about the millions of coffees consumed around the world every single day, and you’ll see the problem. Sure, some of those coffee grounds are recycled as fertilizer to enrich the soil or beauty products like face masks, but most will be buried into the ground. It was while considering this issue that German product designer Julian Lechner came up with a new way of recycling coffee grounds — turning them into tableware.
“We were always drinking coffee at university,” Lechner remembers. “And that’s how I started to wonder. What happens to all that coffee? It was all just getting thrown away.” He began consulting with his professors about ways of using coffee grounds to create a solid material.
“We tried combining with a lot of different things,” Lechner said, “We even tried sugar. That was close, but basically it was a candy cup. It just kept melting after being used three times.” The whole point was to make it last long, so Lechner and his partners went back to the institute to continue their research. Finally, after many failed experiments, they came up with a mix of coffee grounds and a biopolymer(生物高聚物) that seemed to behave the way Lechner had expected it.
“The moment of knowing the cup would actually stand was super-exciting,” he recalls. “It was wonderful to drink that first coffee out of the cup. It proved to be totally worth the wait.” And his creation has proven commercially successful, which is just the icing on the cake. The coffee cups are now present in ten shops across Europe, and the company can hardly keep up with demand, regularly selling out of its stock online.
Lechner will soon launch a larger line of coffee grounds cups and also work on a travel mug. But those are just short-term plans, as Lechner hopes to one day use recycled coffee grounds to create all sort of useful stuff—like sheets and furniture in cafés and restaurants.

22、Qiu Shi and her colleagues often patrol (巡逻) in the mountains, with only bread and sausages to eat. They are members of the first all-woman patrol team in the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, Heilongjiang Province, which was established in 2019 to help with wildlife protection and provide employment for local women.
Qiu, 36, is the oldest of the six guards. They are in charge of protecting Siberian tigers and other wildlife in the reserve. Each patrol they conduct in the mountains requires tens of thousands of steps. In summer, their clothes are completely wet from sweat. Bai Xue used to have fair skin, but after a few months of patrolling, she developed a tan (棕褐色皮肤). Removing traps set by poachers (偷猎者) is one of their most important tasks. At first, the team wasn’t able to destroy the traps, but it became easier with more practice, although their hands are now callused (长茧) from the heavy work.
The team has collected a great deal of information about the mountain environment in which they operate. “We see human footprints, but also animal tracks which can tell us about the wildlife population in a certain area and their main range of activity.” Qiu said, adding that the most exciting thing about patrolling the mountains is checking the cameras monitoring animals’ movements. Every time seeing an image of a Siberian tiger sleeping or wandering about, they are excited. It’s like finding treasure. And the images collected by the team suggest that the wildlife populations are increasing. The data will be provided to experts to study the migration (迁移) patterns of Siberian tigers and other animals. During patrols, they also rescue injured animals wherever they find them.
The work is hard and the days are long, but they intend to continue, determined to protect the wildlife of this important natural habitat.

23、Pickled sides are Chinese people’s solution to tasteless food. Just a spoonful of sauce or pickled vegetables over rice can make a meal taste a million times better.
During busy work schedules, many young people in China don’t have the luxury of enjoying insightful conversations with friends and family at the dinner table. Instead, they find themselves eating alone.
Chinese youth are kept company during these 20-to-30-minute windows by TV shows or short videos, which they stream on their phone, tablet, or television. On the Internet, such content has been called “digital pickled vegetables”.
Some popular picks include classic Chinese dramas and situation comedies (sitcoms) like Empresses in the Palace and My Own Swordsman. American sitcoms such as Friends and How I Met Your Mother are also favored for their amusing jokes and simple storylines. You don’t need to know anything about either to get a good laugh from a random episode.
Some have questioned the value of such videos, pointing out that some explainers ruin good films and books and that no-brainer mini-series aren’t informational. On the other hand, we see nothing wrong with some harmless fun to accompany a lonely meal after a long day of work. Instead of being accompanied by friends and family during meal my young people in China are kept company by TV shows or short videos.
Can this habit affect your diet? According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more unconsciously. An international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating patterns on four different days. The patterns included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction (分心). After analyzing their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased intake of calories by about 15 percent.
To explore the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to a recording about another person eating and the other listened to a clip that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
【1】Why do many Chinese young people eat alone?
A.They hate to share food with workmates.
B.They fail to have the luxury of dining space.
C.They tend to have busy work timetables.
D.They prefer not to talk with strangers.
【2】What do the underlined words “digital pickled vegetables” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Videos you watch while eating.
B.Sauce you choose while eating.
C.Vegetables you like while eating.

A.The famous actors and actresses.
B.The funny jokes and simple plots.
C.The random episodes and seasons.
D.The delicious food and drinks.
【4】Why do we eat more with “digital pickles”?
A.They increase our feeling of hunger.
B.They make the food more delicious.
C.They draw our attention to the diet.
D.They shift our attention from the meals.
24、Created from natural materials such as mulberry leaves and bamboo, the earliest umbrella in China was used to protect themselves from dangers. Sometime in 1st century BC, first paper umbrellas appeared and they very quickly found their way to the hands of wealthy females who by then accepted the sun-shade umbrella as a necessary part of their fashion accessory (配件) like animals’ skin and fur. Even though carefully produced and delicate umbrellas from paper and silk weighed only few hundred grams, they were capable of protecting their bearers from the rain because of the special process of applying oil on their cover.
Because of their shortage and high cost, umbrellas quickly became a symbol of power in China and surrounding Asian countries. To differentiate themselves from the rest of the population, Chinese royal members carried only red or yellow umbrellas, while the rest used blue ones. As the centuries went on, the cost of Chinese umbrellas went down, which enabled them to be used by general population and even males. Personal use was not the only application for umbrellas, and many creative designs were introduced even as early as 3rd century AD.
Surrounding countries adopted the umbrella into their tradition, often showing beautiful designs and artwork with great pride, especially by royal members in Korea, Burma and Siam. Travelers from the West soon carried Chinese umbrellas to continental Europe which was just exiting Dark Ages and was eager to adopt new fashion from distant lands. Umbrellas soon took over the female nobility (贵族) in Italy, France and England, where they managed to slowly evolve umbrellas into the general accessory that is used by everyone today.
Even though modern plastic umbrellas represent the majority of worldwide sales, traditional Chinese umbrellas are still respected by many. They are always in great demand. Fujian and Hunan Provinces are still making millions of them every year and the most respected Hangzhou-style umbrellas are now known for their quality and beauty.
