二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers’ market. Nine people were killed. More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. Apparently, he was just old and confused.

This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts, or worse.

In our teenage years, we all heard “driving is not a right; it’s a privilege.” That is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia(痴呆) are very serious concerns. Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults’ driving ability. By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old, his or her driving privilege should be examined.

Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety. Another option is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours. Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there are laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn’t some prescription drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily.

The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all. Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it’s dangerous for the rest of us.

【1】The first paragraph is written in order to show_________.

A. the harm of driving at an old age

B. the importance of traffic safety

C. traffic accidents are on the rise

D. many elderly drivers are careless

【2】The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving __________.

A. over eighty-five

B. between sunset and dawn

C. with the help of voice warning systems

D. under the influence of prescription drugs

【3】The underlined word “unsettling” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.

A. disappointing B. worrying

C. touching     D. interesting

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. How to keep old people safe on the road?

B. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws?

C. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers?

D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person?

22、   Have you ever been in a situation where your name is spelled incorrectly on a Starbucks cup even after you spell out every single letter to the barista(咖啡师) What would you feel when a room freezes into a sudden silence as soon as you start talking — living with a foreign accent is difficult

Recently a gentleman in his 40s noticed my accent, and asked me where I was from. Then he inquired about what I majored in and how long I’d been in the US to learn English. After a polite exchange, he said sympathetically that he couldn’t imagine how hard it was for me to deal with reading long English texts. Furthermore, he seemed genuinely puzzled to the fact that I learned to speak English “so well” in an African country. Usually I would have shown my defensive self, pointing out his ignorance and telling him how sad I felt that his education had failed him. But I didn’t.

Sometimes these everyday experiences can drive me crazy. I even think of trying to actively “sound American” as a way to escape the stereotypes(模式化观念) that people have. But if I practiced an American accent enough, would people actually focus on what I say rather than how I say it?

Actually, to speak in our accent itself is to tell a story of identity. My housemates and I come from seven different countries: Jamaica, USA, Gambia, Yemen, China, Ecuador and SA. None of us speak native-like English, but we understand each other perfectly and get along harmoniously. If we all sounded the same, I think that would be boring. Together, we make up a cocktail of beautifully crafted accents with seasoned experiences. None of us owes anyone an explanation about why we don’t sound like how you expect us to.

Accepting that people sound different and embracing them for that reason is important. We are a generation of different languages, dialects, and accents. The world is more and more diverse with various cultures, and if that means making extra efforts to understand someone’s accent and learning how to spell their name, that’s just how it’s going to be.

Deal with it.

1What purpose do the two questions serve in the first paragraph?

A. To introduce the topic of the passage. B. To share some unpleasant experiences.

C. To show it’s hard to live with an accent. D. To express disappointment at the service.

2What does the author probably do?

A. An English teacher. B. An international student.

C. A Starbuck waiter. D. A university professor.

3How did the author probably feel after talking with the gentleman?

A. Ashamed. B. Amazed. C. Amused. D. Annoyed.

4Which of the following might the author most likely agree with?

A. Efforts should be made to get rid of accents.

B. We should speak the way we are expected to.

C. Acceptance of accents is needed in the society.

D. Education contributes to native-like English.

23、Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV.

【1】He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more. he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down a street after someone he wants to talk to.

【2】 He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty of stupid crimes.

Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over. 【3】Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks, little effort is spent on searching.

A third big difference between the drama detective and the real one is the unpleasant pressures: First, as members of a police force, they always have to behave absolutely in accordance with the law. 【4】They can hardly ever do both. Most of the time some of them have to break the rules in small ways.

If the detective has to deceive (欺骗)the world, the world often deceives him. 【5】 And this separation the detective feels between himself and the rest of the world is deepened by the simple-mindedness-as he sees it-of citizens, social workers, doctors, law-makers, and judges, who, instead of eliminating crime, punish the criminals less severely in the hope that this will make them reform.

A.He can't get any evidence from the witnesses.

B.In real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem.

C.Little of his time is spent in chatting.

D.Sometimes he can chat with others to relax himself.

E.Second, as expensive public servants, they have to get results.

F.The first difference is that a policeman's real life revolves round criminal law.

G.Hardly anyone he meets tells him the truth.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jennie Grant lay on a cot (小床)   near the window. She had been lying in that same place for many weeks. One of her legs was shorter than the other, and the doctor had fastened a heavy weight to it in order to make it grow. But she must be still all the time.

Every morning before her father went to work, he moved her cot close to the window so she could look out. There was not much to see, for the buildings were high. But she loved to watch the swallows against the sky, and there was a flock of doves that often alighted (飞落) on the roof across the way. Still she became very tired with nothing to do and no one to play with.

One day Mrs. Brightly came to see if she could help her. On the way home, she was busy thinking about Jennie. Suddenly she said to herself, “I know what I’ll do. There are my two little sisters who have plenty of money and hardly ever think of anyone but themselves, and there are some other little neighbors. We will have a little ‘Sunshine Band’ and make her happy, and the children will enjoy doing something for someone who needs help. They will find that ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

She wrote notes to the girls, asking them to come to her house Monday afternoon. Then she told them the plan. They decided to fill a pretty basket to stand by Jennie’s bed, and took it to her on her birthday. Everything was to be put in packages, so her pleasure would last a long time, and everything was to be something for Jennie to do. Week after week they met and worked on the articles for the basket. They enjoyed it so much that they could hardly wait for Jennie’s birthday to come.

One bright morning when Jennie opened her eyes, she remembered it was her birthday.
