二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   One man’s white bread is another man’s green vegetables.

That’s the key from The Personalised Diet, a new book from Israeli authors Eran Segal and Eran Elinav. The authors say it’s time to admit to ourselves that one-size-fits-all diets don’t work, and when it comes to nutrition,it’s about doing what works best for your body, not catching the latest diet fashion.

“For years,we’ve been trying to search for that silver-bullet diet and we’ve been miserably failing,” Segal said. “And that’s because the best diet for each person really has to be tailored to that individual.”

They conducted a personalised nutrition project at Weizmann, where hundreds of volunteers agreed to have their blood sugar tested after meals. One participant in the study, a woman named Ruti, said she was surprised that it was tomatoes -- not ice cream or candies -- that were raising her blood sugar level. Ruti recalled, “I have now significantly reduced my intake of tomato and I’m feeling much more energetic, which still surprises me. I have already lost a couple of pounds, and I have high hopes that I have finally found the answer to my weight struggle, too.”

The Israeli scientists found that some people can consume traditionally unhealthy foods with little or no rise in their blood sugar levels, while others have a stronger response, and therefore shouldn’t eat those foods. It’s those kinds of results that you can only find from a personalised diet.

“What we were surprised to find out was just like any other food, there is no such thing as good bread,” Elinav said. “The response to bread was completely individualised.”

1What is suggested in the first sentence?

A.Everyone has their own tastes.

B.Nutrition serves your body best.

C.People’s response to the same food is different.

D.The latest diet doesn’t fit each person.

2What does “that silver-bullet diet” refer to?

A.A diet that is low in fat.

B.A diet that begins a new diet trend.

C.A diet that works best for everyone.

D.A diet that provides all the nutrition.

3Ruti’s example suggests that to control weight, one needs to   .

A.eat much fewer tomatoes

B.control their blood sugar levels

C.struggle for weight loss constantly

D.eat according to his or her blood sugar level

4Why is Elinav’s opinion on bread mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To advise people not to eat unhealthy food.

B.To stress the need of the personalised diet.

C.To explain the popularity of white bread.

D.To show the importance of good bread.

22、   “I will need to open your neck to remove the tumor,” the surgeon told me on a hot summer day. The words turned into white noise.“So ,an ugly scar across my neck, then?” I asked. The nurse said: “Don’t worry. The closure is like his signature. Just like you want a perfect scar, he wants to give you one. You’ll barely see it.” I found some comfort in that.

I googled “cancer surgery scar”and was presented with neck images: necks with red and purple lines. closed with stitches or glue; necks with multiple scars....It was enough to make me shut my Macbook, as anxiety pulsed through my body. In the mirror, I admired my neck, running my finger across a gold chain I wore. Then a tiny voice said:“Mummy!”

My then fie-year-old son,. Jack, appeared in the mirror behind me. Our reflection was a big reality check. See, my son didn’t know I had cancer and was having surgery. I'm a single mom. Jack lives with me and doesn’t have a relationship with his father. I’m his hero. I'm the homework helper, nurse, chef, taxi driver, and every other variation of parent. I knew I couldn’t lose heart over cancer or some scar on my neck --I’m this kid's life!

So I did the next best thing I could think of: I made an appointment to get my hair done a few days before the first surgery. My goal was simple: golden hair to frame my scar. If I couldn’t hide it, I might as well show it off. I never had any intentions of hiding the scar. I didn’t want my son to think my scar was something to be ashamed of. I'm his role model and I needed to set a good example. Bad things can happen, but it's how you deal with them that matters.

The scar proves I faced my fear and won. If I got through that I can get through all the hardships, land on my feet and live boldly.

1At first, the author felt.______about having a scar across her neck after the surgery?

A.comfortable and relieved. B.thrilled and embarrassed.

C.indifferent and unconcerned. D.anxious and frightened.

2The author was determined to be courageous because_______

A.she was the role model of her son.

B.she thought she could overcome the cancer.

C.her son was tally dependent on her.

D.her son had a bad relationship with his father.

3Why did the author want to get her hair styled?

A.To show her scar bravely. B.To shape beautiful hair.

C.To hide the obvious scar. D.To make her son proud.

4What is the story intended to convey?

A.Parents should set a good example for their children.

B.We should challenge difficulty and face fear bravely.

C.Scars can never be regarded as personal signature.

D.We should never hide our scars or any other pain.

23、   If you know a bottle of water has been recycled from urine (尿液), will you drink it? Chinese astronauts have done so.

China National Space Administration(CNSA)says it uses a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater. The machine will recycle everything from sweat, the water for washing hands, shower water, water used for brushing teeth, and even urine, to make drinking water.

It saves CNSA millions of YMB each year. At present, each CNSA astronaut uses about 4.4 liters of water every day. It costs about 150 million a year to transport water up to space.

The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations because it won’t have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttles or rockets. Besides, it’s important as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to more.

The recycling system was brought up to the space station last August by space shuttles. The three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in CNSA center that worked on the system.

“This is something that has been the stuff of science work,” astronaut Chen Dong said before taking a small mouthful. “The taste is well worth trying.”

Is the water clean? Scientists say the wastewater will go through a very complicated (复杂的) process. For example, different chemicals will be put in the wastewater; the water will be heated to 130C to get rid of bacteria. The recycled water is thousands of times better than the water from a city tap, scientists say.

1What can the water recycled from urine be used for?

A.Drinking.

B.Washing hands.

C.Brushing teeth.

D.Taking a bath.

2Why is a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater needed on space stations?

A.To get astronauts to keep healthy.

B.To help astronauts do experiments.

C.To provide astronauts a basic living condition.

D.To save the cost of transporting water up to space.

3Scientists get rid of bacteria in the wastewater by ________.

A.recycling

B.freezing

C.heating

D.collecting

4What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Water recycled from urine tastes good.

B.How to recycle the wastewater on space.

C.New technology is used in the Chinese space station.

D.CNSA uses a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater for astronaut stations.

24、How Minecraft is Helping Children with Autism (自闭症)

Like many constructions, it started small. But now thousands of children with autism are making friends and learning social skills by playing a version of online building game Minecraft.

Stuart Duncan got the idea through a popular blog he ran about his own experiences with autism as well as bringing up a son with autism. Other parents with autistic children started telling him that their kids were crazy about a game that let them explore a randomly generated wilderness. 【1】

So, in 2013, Duncan, a web developer in Timmins, Canada, set up a server to run a version of Minecraft exclusively for children with autism and their families.

【2】 The community boasts nearly 7000 members, along with a team of admins to help manage its many activities. “Parents see such a benefit for themselves and their children,” says Duncan. “Minecraft strips away the pressures and distractions of the real world.”

The server caught the eye of Kate Ringland at the University of California, Irvine. 【3】 “Autcraft” should be looked upon as not just another online community, but as a tool.

【4】 They may struggle to pick up on social cues or understand another person’s perspective. Duncan thinks Minecraft removes the pressures typical of the real world where people are actually living in. No noise, no unfamiliar environment, no pressure to track others’ facial expressions or worry about eye contact. “With Minecraft, you can really just be yourself,” he says. “The social interactions, the relationships, the communication — everything just boils down to you and your keyboard.”

A.Now, almost three years later, running “Autcraft” is his full-time job.

B.This is a great way for them to play a game they love, but also have a social experience.

C.Everyday social situations can be challenging for autistic children.

D.She has spent 60 hours inside this virtual world, watching how the kids play and chat to one another.

E.“Autcraft” builds from the interests and passions of people with autism rather than trying to redirect or surprise them.

F.However, despite loving the game, many of the children were being bullied by other players.
