21、Local bamboo plantations in Europe have ensured that giant pandas in Belgium and the United Kingdom have been fed with enough fresh bamboo during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to zookeepers.
Every week, there are about 1,000 kilograms of fresh bamboos delivered from a French bamboo plantation called La Bambouseraie to the Belgian zoo of Pairi Daiza where two giant pandas plus their three babies live.
Mathieu Goedefroy, spokesman of the zoo, said “It is very important for us to be assured that we always and at every time are able to provide fresh bamboo of the highest quality for our dear pandas. That's why we decide to buy this growing house.”
Since 1856, when a botanist Eugene Mazel began his first plantings by making species from all the world used to the plantation, La Bamhouseraie has developed into a park growing more than 240 varieties of bamboo now.
Of the 1,000 kilograms of bamboo delivered to the zoo each week, only a small part is eaten by the pandas. The other animals can consume the rest of it so that none is wasted.
The story is similar in the U. K. 's Edinburgh Zoo, where the fresh bamboo has been shipped from the Netherlands. Jo Elliot, the animal collection manager at the zoo, said, “We have made sure that our stores have enough supplies. The pandas need their bamboo. Most of it gets shipped in from the Netherlands, and at the moment that is fine. We are still getting deliveries. ”
In early May, Canada's Calgary Zoo said it would have to send back two giant pandas to China, since fewer flights, as a result of COVID-19, were causing a lack of bamboo for the pandas. An adult giant panda eats about 35 kilograms of bamboo shoots, or kilograms of fresh bamboo and bamboo leaves daily. There was no locally grown bamboo in Calgary, so supplies of bamboo had relied on the shipments from China.
“We have also contacted our workmates from Calgary, Canada,” Goedefroy said. “We'll see if we could be of any help for them with our bamboo supplies. ”

22、Mr. Pagano is watching a video of a polar bear swimming after a seal. The seal escapes! The bear meets another bear. They look at each other and then go separate ways. What makes this video so unusual is that it’s from the point of view of the polar bear. A camera was previously put around the bear’s neck by Mr. Pagano’s research team with the aim to find out what polar bears will need to survive in their changing habitat.
According to scientists, polar bears are endangered because of Earth’s warming climate, which is reducing the ice pack that floats on the Arctic Ocean. The ice pack goes through a yearly cycle. In the fall and winter, the ice pack grows southward, spreading toward North America, Asia, and Europe. By the end of winter, the ice pack lies over shallower waters near land, where seals live. The polar bears hunt along the edge of that ice, eating seals in the spring and early summer before the ice over shallow waters melts. It’s how the bears fatten up for the next winter.
In the past few decades, the ice pack has started to grow later in the fall. As a result, it isn’t as thick and starts to melt and break up earlier in the spring. That gives the bears less sea ice for hunting and forces some of them to swim farther to move between land and ice habitats. Studies show that, in places where the ice has been breaking up earlier for decades, the number of bears is going down, and their overall health is getting worse. Scientists want to know if bears are still finding enough to eat and how far they have to travel, or swim, to find food.
Using the GPS collars, the researchers confirmed that some bears are swimming long distances. Of 52 bears, 20 took a total of 50 long-distance swims, each one a journey of more than 30 miles. Are the long-distance travels harming their chances for survival? If polar bears are going to survive in the warming Arctic, humans may need to act right now. With the work of scientists like Mr. Pagano, silver linings will finally cut open the darkness.

24、The Worlds' Best Bookshops
There's nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oases of literature that travellers can bring you.
Daikanyama T﹣site | Tokyo
It is well worth visiting even if just to admire the building's beautiful, crisscrossed architecture. Once you've had your fill of roaming three floors' worth of bookshelves, there's the bar, the coffee shop, or even the video rental space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer. Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages. I could have stayed hours here.
City Lights | San Francisco
The three﹣storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poetry, fiction, translation, politics, history and the arts. It hosts events and readings, and runs a non﹣profit of the same name that aims to promote diversity of voices and ideas in literature. It's opposite Vesuvio, a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat﹣generation writers and artists.
Shakespeare and Company | Paris
I made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with English﹣language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors ﹣ heartfelt messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself, or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.
Hutatma Chowk | Mumbai
A few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling's connections with the country. I spotted a cheap copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp﹣covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk (Martyrs' Square). The booksellers here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for. To me, those well﹣thumbed (翻旧了的) books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai's readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.
【1】In which bookshop can you buy a drink while visiting?
A.Daikanyama T﹣site.

【3】What do the four bookstores have in common?
A.They are beautifully designed.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. It’s a story of how I found the strength to change myself for better and then how I get rid of my fears to be even better. If anyone is inspired by this, that’s wonderful.
I’d been stuck as this incredibly insecure, under-confident and just scared individual for years and years. Since childhood I’d been stuck like this. Kids I met for the first time looked at me rudely and unkindly. Even my friends—actually, I had very few friends because I just felt too ashamed and frightened to make some, though I was eager to and felt extremely lonely in the depth of my heart—laughed at me and gave me bad nicknames. I felt terrible, but I’d just resigned to a life where I’d be afraid of everything and be this “introvert” (内向的人) or whatever. I thought I would never be able to change, never, for my whole life.
But then it all started changing. Something clicked. I suddenly determined to go on a diet, and lost some weight. It was tough. I felt hungry all the time. I was always tempted by the smell of bread and hamburger, even when I didn’t see them. But the toughest thing was that even if I had just had my meals, I felt hunger mentally. However, I held on. In over a period of 6 months I finally managed to stick to one of my diets. I didn’t know how. But I did make it.
The loss of 90 lbs brought me from overweight straight down to underweight. This isn’t the best part. More importantly and inspiringly, I suddenly found strength in me. I realized I could be totally different. And maybe, I could even be whatever I wanted to be. This taught me that I could change myself.
Then I wondered, perhaps, I could also get rid of those of my fears, just like I succeeded in losing my extra pounds. It might not be easy, but it might not be that difficult.
