21、 Zoos have been around for centuries — and they’ve changed a lot over the years. In the Middle Ages, wealthy people kept animals in their gardens. Public animal parks appeared in European cities in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Philadelphia Zoo, the first in the United States, opened in 1874.
Until a few decades (十年) ago, most zoos were organized by creatures — monkeys in one area, cats in another, birds somewhere else, just like museum collections. In recent years, zoos have instead begun grouping animals that would normally interact (互相作用) in the wild. Moreover, instead of closing animals behind bars, designers are creating landscapes like the environments in which these creatures would naturally be found. Nearby signs provide information about the animals and their habitats in parts of the world where they normally live.
The Denver Zoo’s new Predator Ridge exhibit, for example, aims to teach visitors about Africa. Eight acres of land provide homes for 14 animal species, including lions, porcupines, cranes, and wild dogs. Plants from the region grow alongside African-like landform. Ten-foot-tall mounds (土墩) give lions a place from which to survey their surroundings, just as they would do in the wild.
Landscape design makes visitors to the Denver Zoo’s Predator Ridge exhibit feel like they’re really in Africa.
Animals in Predator Ridge can’t actually be mixed with one another, for safety reasons. But hidden deep channels and other smart features allow visitors to see all the animals at once. Different species can see each other too.

22、One of the proven benefits of reading is that it helps to build a stronger memory. But does it matter if you read the words on a page or listen to them?
In a 2016 study, one group of readers was asked to listen to an excerpt (摘录) from the audiobook version of Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, while another group read the same excerpt on an e-reader. A third group read and listened at the same time.
All participants were then given a quiz to measure how well they had absorbed the material. It was concluded that participants were able to recall as much from reading as they were from listening.
Reading has been proven to provide a number of benefits to your brain, and make you smarter overall. However, science also tells us that listening to audiobooks can also have very positive effects on the brain. For example, according to a study by the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, our brains are more likely to create meaningful images when we listen to stories, as opposed to reading them in a traditional format. That’s because when we listen instead of reading, our brains are allowed more space for their visual processes to do their things.
In addition, audiobooks can also help boost your comprehension and vocabulary as much as their print and digital versions. Audio versions might even have an extra advantage for those of us learning English as a second language or teaching kids to read, since proper pronunciation will be guaranteed. This benefit can be enhanced by following along with the text while listening to the audio.
There’s no doubt that both reading and listening to books do some great good to your brain and overall well-being. Thankfully, a great read (or listen) is more accessible than you’d think! There are dozens of free and cheap print books, audiobooks, and e-books out there waiting to be discovered!
【1】How was the 2016 study carried out?
A.By giving examples.

【2】Why was a quiz given to all participants?
A.To strengthen their memory.
B.To improve their ability.
C.To test their learning effects.
D.To understand their personalities.
【3】What can we learn about the study in paragraph 4?
A.Listening creates mental pictures.
B.Reading results in a better memory.
C.Reading turns visual processes into reality.
D.Listening improves our imagination.
【4】In terms of language learning, audiobooks ______.
A.ensure greater fluency in learners’ language speaking

23、It has been a hard year for the farmers in Michigan and more attention needs to be paid to their emotional well-being, according to a report written by Jim Zook, director of the Michigan Corn Growers Association.
“Nobody has seen a year that has dealt with so many challenges that we have seen with the weather, the markets, the trade and the politics. All of them together have become a storm,” said Zook.
The farmers have been struggling this year because of volatile (易变的) weather and markets. According to Zook, some corn growers will not be able to go on for another year. He said the Michigan Corn Growers Association was putting together programs to provide emotional support for the farmers. “The biggest thing is that we just want to make sure that the farmers in Michigan will work together through this difficult time,” said Zook.
Zook said planting was delayed in the spring because of the cold and wet weather. “We didn’t get as many acres (英亩) planted as what we had hoped,” said Zook. “And so there were a number of acres that kept idle this year.” Zook said he was hopeful that the snow would melt. If it did, he said the farmers would still be able to harvest the corn. But he said if the snow melted, they then would need low temperatures to freeze the ground so the ground could support the weight of heavy harvesting equipment for the corn.
“The challenge will appear in soybean (大豆) harvest because they are lower to the ground,” said Zook. “And if that snow is up on the bean, they won’t be able to get them.”
【1】Which can best describe the situation of the farmers in Michigan?
A.Optimistic.
B.Familiar.
C.Embarrassing.
D.Challenging.
【2】What should the farmers in Michigan do according to Zook?
A.Help each other.
B.Buy more equipment.
C.Save their expenses.
D.Focus on the weather.
【3】What does the underlined word “idle” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Hopeful.
B.Developing.
C.Free of charge.
D.Not in use.
【4】How did Zook feel about the situation?
