二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、How do people traditionally manufacture (制造) things? They usually start with a sheet of metal, wood or other material and cut, drill () and shave it to create a desired shape. Sometimes, they use a mold (模具) made of metal or sand, pour liquid plastic or metal into it and let it cool to create a solid part.

Now, a completely different method is gaining popularity.

On Oct. 9, 2013, London Science Museum kicked off its new exhibition, 3-D: Printing the Future, with over 600 3-D printed objects on display, including space probes (探测器), toy dolls and even human organs – basically any product you can think of, reported Live Science.

You might find it hard to believe that an object can actually be “printed out” like a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it works. Just as a traditional printer sprays (喷洒) ink onto paper line by line, modern 3-D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.

Instead of ink, the materials the 3-D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin (树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is – from a millimeter to less than the width of a hair – the smoother and finer the object will be. And objects always come out in one piece, sparing you the trouble of putting different parts together afterward.

For example, 10 years ago a desktop 3-D printer might have cost 20,000 (200,000 yuan), while now it costs only about 1,000, according to the BBC. In fact, 3-D printers have been around for some time, but until recently they hadn’t been very popular since few people could afford them. Last year, though, saw a big decrease in the price of 3-D printers.

However, as 3-D printing technology becomes more commonplace, it may trigger certain problems. One of them is piracy (盗版). “Once you can download a coffee maker, or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3-D printer, who will visit a retail (零售的) store again?” an expert on 3-D printing told Forbes News.

Even more frightening, the world’s first 3-D printed gun was successfully fired in the US in May of this year, which means that 3-D printing could potentially give more people access to weapons.

1According to the article, in the future, 3-D printing technology will probably ______.

A. change the way people make products

B. be applied as widely in our daily lives as computers

C. forbid many countries to make purchases of weapons

D. take the place of normal printers and save lots of energy

2What was the big event that happened in the 3-D printing industry last year?

A. Over 600 3-D printed objects were on display in an exhibition.

B. 3-D printing technology came to be used in various fields.

C. The world’s first 3-D printed gun was successfully made.

D. The 3-D printer became more affordable for consumers.

3What is the author’s attitude toward 3-D printing technology?

A. Amused.   B. Objective.

C. Supportive.   D. Negative.

23、Kieran Moise, 18, started growing out his hair in the eighth grade, after losing a friend to brain cancer. He had seen people donate their hair to children who had lost theirs during medical treatment and wanted to do same.

“Kieran has always been known for his hair. It was a big part of his personality and who he was,” said his mother, Kelly Moise. “But he has always been the most compassionate and caring person. Since he was 6 years old, he somehow had the mindset of raising money and giving it to people who need it, and that never changed.”

In May, Moise graduated from high school with an impressive 19-inch Afro (非洲发式). But with him set to enter the U.S. Air Force Academy, it was finally time for the big cut.

To maximize his impact, Moise organized a live event at a local brewery in Huntsville and an online fundraising campaign called “Kieran’s Curls for Cancer”, where he aimed to raise $1,000 per inch cut.

On May 29, nearly 100 people attended the event, where they watched Moise get his hair braided and snipped off. His hair was donated to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization in Michigan that makes free wigs for kids and young adults facing medically related hair loss.

By the end of the day, the event raised $20,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has continued to raise money online. As of Saturday, it was more than $39,000.

“Charitable giving comes in many forms, from direct acts of kindness to impactful public statements that motivate others to come together to support a cause,” Richard C. Shadyac Jr., President and CEO for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, told CNN, “Kieran’s simple act of kindness exemplifies (例证) the power of younger generations and is something to celebrate, a selfless decision that will make a direct impact on the lives of the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and children everywhere for years to come.”

24、   When a typical kid hums (哼唱) a tune, it’s usually something like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” not Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D Minor.

So when Nygel Witherspoon began to hum the very difficult concerto (协奏曲), his family guessed that he should have music lessons. He was, however, just 3 years old.

“He was calm, with an ability to focus,” recalled David Holmes, Witherspoon’s cello (大提琴) teacher from age 3 to 16.

Witherspoon is a familiar name in his hometown. He has inherited his talent from both sides of his family, including his aunt, the late jazz vocalist Shirley Witherspoon.

The 17-year-old doesn’t see himself as competitive. “I think it’s more important for students to have a supportive environment than a competitive one,” he said. “It’s great to have a support system, where you can be yourself and improve right along with others doing the same thing.”

Witherspoon’s love of music blossomed as he attended viola (中提琴) lessons with older siblings (兄弟姐妹). Their teacher, David France, noticed that the little boy was a sponge (海绵).

“He’d absorb everything they did,” France said. Witherspoon was given a box violin, but he wanted to play “the big one” ― the cello. He loved its size and tone. That’s when he was matched with his teacher Holmes.

Witherspoon’s drive is inspired by the connection music provides. He recalled that he and his siblings performed as a chamber trio (室内乐三重奏) at their grandmother’s nursing home. The positive reaction from residents gave him motivation.

“It’s so important, whether it’s hip-hop or classical,” he said. “Music is the universal language. It connects all of us.”

His mother runs an in-home day care where lucky children can hear Witherspoon’s concertos as background music.

Witherspoon finds the noisy environment helpful in terms of learning to focus and play with distractions. As he practices in the kitchen sometimes children toddle (蹒跚学步) up to listen.

Despite years of performing, Witherspoon said he still gets nervous sometimes.

“But once I’m on stage, I connect with my instrument and try to tell a story with my music.”

1How was Witherspoon different from other kids when he was 3?

A.He began to teach himself music.

B.He was able to hum very difficult tunes.

C.He had already made up his mind to learn violin.

D.He could already play the songs to which he’d listened.

2What does Witherspoon think is important for music learners?

A.Practicing hard.

B.Being very competitive.

C.Being in a supportive environment.

D.Having a good teacher from an early age.

3What is France’s impression of Witherspoon?

A.He is a fast learner. B.He is a creative player.

C.He works very hard. D.He is open-minded.

4What is the main purpose of Paragraphs 8 and 9?

A.To compare Witherspoon’s performance with his siblings’.

B.To show that motivation plays a big role in music studies.

C.To stress how music connects people.

D.To show how studying music helped Witherspoon overcome difficulties.
