21、People generally like to pick out the best-looking fruits and vegetables when shopping for produce(农产品), but Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and faulty produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.
A trial run of the ugly food line, named “Naturally Imperfect”, began with only apples and potatoes to choose from. Consumer demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more imperfect vegetables and fruits like onions and mushrooms.
All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let abnormal produce go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he was right, given how popular the line has become.
“It really went well beyond our expectation,” Branson said. “I think it really spoke to the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some choices.”
Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response(响应) to the first offering of apples and potatoes showed the chance to enlarge the line and offer more choices at a greater price to Canadian families.
“If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won’t look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store”, said Branson. “And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if somebody were to take an apple from Naturally Imperfect, put it right beside a No. 1 apple, close his eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”
【1】Loblaws is different from other supermarkets in that _______.

D.The fruits grown by ourselves are more nutritious than those in the store.
22、 Sharpshooters refer to those who are skilled at firing a gun and accurately hitting what they are aiming at. However, some fish are also called amazing sharpshooters. People wonder how they hit their targets without using tools? By spitting! The fish shoot so accurately that they rarely miss their target.
These amazing fish are archerfish (印度射水鱼).There are several different types of archerfish living in Southeast Asia. They spit at their dinner to catch it. To catch dinner, a fish first sets itself in a certain place, for example just below the surface of the water. It puts the tip of its mouth so it barely breaks through the water. Then, the fish waits for an unsuspecting insect to land on a leaf or branch hanging over the water.
When an unsuspecting, or unknowing insect lands, the fish attacks. The fish squeezes its gill (腮)covers very rapidly, which forces water into the fish's mouth. In the roof of its mouth the fish has a groove (槽)• The fish forms the small groove and its tongue into a narrow tube by pressing its tongue up against its groove. The water forced into the fish's mouth is forcefully pushed out of the fish's moulh through the tube. Archerfish have been known to send a stream up to 5 meters (16 feet). However, archerfish can only shoot insects up to 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) away due to their limited accuracy.
When the unsuspecting insect is hit with a sudden stream of water, it is knocked into or falls into the water. Once in the water, the insect becomes dinner. Archerfish learn how to spit when they are young. They get more accurate with practice. Adult archerfish rarely miss.
Within a meter, archerfish will often spring out of the water and grab an insect in their mouths.

23、I’d say I fight with my parents a lot. Throughout high school, it often seemed like everything was a fight. I was always jealous (羡慕的) of some of my friends who didn’t seem to be dealing with those problems at home like I was, but I’ve come to see over the years that no one’s situation is perfect.
Part of the reason I work all week during break, in addition to the money, of course, is to be out of the house to avoid continuing fighting. At work, I eat lunch with my friend Krysta every day, but the best days are when our favorite workmate, Lucy, is on her lunch break at the same time as us. Her funny way of storytelling always has us laughing happily, and although she is almost old enough to be our mom, she feels more like a best friend.
A few weeks ago, however, there was a change in our lunch conversation, and the story she told had us in real tears (眼泪) instead of our usual tears of laughter. A more serious topic had come up, and she sat us down to explain the importance of forgiveness (宽恕), especially when it comes to our parents. Telling stories of her troubled relationship with her mother and growing up homeless at times, she changed my whole outlook on life and my feelings towards my parents. She reminded (提醒) us that no matter how much resentment (怨恨) we’re feeling in a moment of anger, we have to be thankful for the support they provide and learn to forgive everything else.
This week I’ve spent my break at home, having very small fights and lots of quality time together with my parents. Sometimes you need a reminder to make you realize how important it is to let go of past resentment and work to repair broken relationships. My workmate’s moving stories not only brought me to tears in the break room at work that day but served as that wake-up call as well.
【1】Why was the author jealous of some of her friends?
A.They didn’t have to work all week.

24、When I was growing up, I had an old neighbour named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any other doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.
When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: “No pain, no gain”. He hardly watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty five years ago. They were all tall and strong.
I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity(逆境) seemed to benefit Doctor Gibbs' trees in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to meet with hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is pray for deep roots, so when the rain falls and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was an ordinary but unforgettable Saturday, and everything was nice and peaceful. The wind, soft but a little cool, clicked through tree branches and stirred the bushes. I was walking along the river, which is rushing and sparkling between green banks, and enjoying some hot chocolate with the sun shining down on me on this nice spring day. I was in the mood to do something nice for a stranger and started to look around for an opportunity to do a random act of kindness.
Two minutes later I was approached from across the pathway by a complete stranger. I wasn’t sure why he was approaching me, when from out of nowhere he started talking to me really rudely. I could tell he was probably drunk or high or who-knows-what, so I just stayed calm and kept walking ahead. There were hundreds of people sitting on benches nearby and walking along the South Bank with me, so I wasn’t really worried.
However, as I tried to walk along, he kept saying offensive things to me and trying to get my attention. I tried to change my course and he kept following me, coming closer each time, and just wouldn’t leave me alone. At one point, he literally cornered me near the rail next to the river at which point I got really scared and didn’t know what to do. Although there were people everywhere, I got worried that the bystander effect might kick in and nobody would do anything about what they were seeing. I was praying that one of the many people sitting on benches nearby who could hear everything and watched this whole episode unfold would be courageous enough to help me out of this situation. “What should I do? What should I do?” I was nearly sobbing.
