22、   According to the Study Abroad Trend Report for 2018, conducted by Chinese education website Eol. cn, the number of Chinese students who study abroad to gain a bachelor’s degree or below is rising, and the current group of Chinese overseas students is younger than those in the past years.

Du Xiying, a Beijing-based study-abroad agent, has first-hand experience working with this younger crop of students. “When I started this job some 10 years ago, almost all cases were filed by college graduates trying to apply for a master's degree in the US, UK, Australia and Canada,” said Du. “Now quite a number of my clients are high school graduates, and my company even transferred some experienced consultants to cover the increasing need of college-bound Chinese students.” However, in the eyes of Du, most of them are not ready to put themselves in a completely different context at such a young age. Although there are no statistics available, according to Du’s observations, college-bound high school graduates from China fall into two groups. There is a group of students from well-off families, with good grades and excellent command of English, and there is another group who did not do very well in their college entrance exams, so they seek to study abroad as a solution to their troubles. “In recent years, with the financial ability of Chinese families growing with the country's development, buying into college is very common,” said Du.

Complaints come from both destination schools in the US and parents of students. Going abroad at a young age needs a great deal of discipline(自律),and college students don't usually live at home-stays so they are free from management. A considerable quantity of students have ended with being dismissed(开除).

As to the dismissal issue, Du said it’s inevitable due to the large number of students crowding abroach.  It’s just not easy to ensure quality. But she does think both students and parents should be responsible for their own investment of both time and money. “The worst case is that a family throws out 1 million yuan for their child to come home with nothing, not even fluent English, said Du.

1What change is mentioned in paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?

A.The age of Chinese students studying abroad is getting younger.

B.More Chinese students studying abroad are getting a master’s degree.

C.Excellent students prefer studying abroad to taking college entrance exams.

D.Chinese students’ grades are improving due to professional consultants’ help.

2Which opinion does Du probably agree with?

A.Most young students are qualified to study abroad.

B.Buying into schools could be a good solution to students’ problems.

C.Destination schools should be responsible for the management of students.

D.Parents and students should be cautious about the decision to study abroad.

3Why do some students fail in their oversea study?

A.They are not financially supported.

B.They are rejected by destination schools.

C.They can't live up to their parents’ expectations.

D.They can't live and study abroad independently.

4What does the underlined word “inevitable” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Can’t be avoided. B.Can’t be ignored.

C.Can’t be realized. D.Can’t be predicted.

23、   At university, when I told people I was studying for a history degree, the response was almost always the same, “You want to be a teacher?” No, a journalist. “Oh. But you’re not majoring in communications?”

In the days when a university education was a privilege, perhaps there wasn’t the assumption that a degree had to be a springboard directly into a career. Those days are long gone. Today, a degree is all but a necessity for the job market, one that more than halves your chances of being unemployed. Still, that alone is no guarantee of a job—and yet we’re paying more and more for one.

Given those costs, most of us want to maximize that investment — and that can lead to a plug-and-play type of approach to higher education. Want to be a journalist? Study journalism, we’re told. A lawyer? Pursue pre-law. Not totally sure? Go into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer and Maths) — you can become an engineer or an IT expert. And no matter what you do, forget the humanities, such as history, philosophy and languages.

It’s true that the humanities come with a higher risk of unemployment, but the risk is slighter than you would imagine. For young people in the U.S. , the unemployment rate of those with humanities degrees is four percent, just a little more than that of engineering degree holders. Lower salaries may not be caused by the degree itself either. The gender pay gap persists in the humanities, whose graduates are more likely to be female. Is it any wonder then that language teachers tend to make less than engineers?

According to LinkedIn’s research on the most sought-after job skills by employers for 2019, the ability to communicate and get along with people, to understand what’s on other people’s minds, and to do full-strength critical analysis were all valued and appreciated. It goes without saying that you can be an excellent communicator and critical thinker without a humanities degree. And any good university education, not just one in English or psychology, should sharpen these abilities further. But few courses of study are quite as heavy on reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking as the humanities — whether that’s by debating other students in a seminar, writing a thesis paper or analyzing poetry.

The whole question of whether a student should choose STEM versus the humanities might be misguided to begin with. The headlines most of us see don’t help. Whatever a student pursues in university, it must be something that they are not only good at, but interested in. Even if it means pursuing a “useless” degree — like one in humanities.

【1】Why are people paying more and more for a degree?

A.Because people need a degree to further their career.

B.Because university education is considered a privilege.

D.Because their interest can be developed in university.

A.a tip for choosing a major

B.the importance of higher education

C.a problem that exists among STEM graduates

D.the reason why people overlook the humanities

【3】According to the author, what is the benefit of majoring in humanities?

A.A comparatively high salary after graduation.

B.Better chances of getting rid of gender prejudice.

D.More exposure to the training of language and thinking.

【4】What is the author's attitude towards the pursuit of humanities?

A.Doubtful.

B.Optimistic.

C.Objective.

D.Concerned.

24、   “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.

“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, "losing the ability to understand the emotions(情感) of other people is one of the costs."

Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures and videos of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a fiveday nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.

Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn't show much improvement.

The study is not perfect in some sense, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us. “Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real communication.” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the university of San Francisco.

Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 216 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising. Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑)(59%)and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带)(53%)!

So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called "Generation Helpless".

2Scientists think the results of Greenfield's experiment .

A.are far from perfect B.are quite surprising

D.Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.

4What is the best title for the text?
