二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Connie Monroe clicks a button, flicks her wrist and watches as her neighborhood floods. The shorelines are first to go. Then, the baseball fields at Fleming Park. By the time seawater reaches the senior center, it has flooded streets and over a dozen brick homes. Monroe moves her head up and down, side to side, taking in the simulated (仿真的) view. This is what could happen to Turner Station, a historic African American community southeast of Baltimore, as sea levels rise.

Climate change presents many challenges to coastal communities and to those trying to prepare for its impacts, but one of the most basic is also one of the most vexing: How do you show people and convince them of a possible future?

Communicating the realness and immediacy of the climate threat is hugely important to climate researchers and those aiming to lessen its causes. But it’s also the most important to communities faced with coming changes that are already unavoidable. These projects need public support and input. That’s why Monroe and other residents are being directed to sit in metal chairs, put on virtual reality headsets and watch their homes flood.

Turner Station, a community which gets flooded easily, is trying to prepare. It has partnered with the Port of Baltimore, a few nonprofits and a local landscape architecture firm to adopt a range of tools and ways to communicate climate change to the public, because every person is different and every place is different.

The virtual reality program is only the most recent, and perhaps the most effective step. Virtual reality is an immersive experience that can trick the human brain into thinking it’s real. But tricking people is not the goal of the sea level rise simulation being used at Turner Station, says Juiano Calil, one of the program’s developers. ‘‘The goal,” he says, ‘‘is to start a conversation and help folks visualize the impacts of climate change and the solutions, and also discuss the trade-offs between them.”

【1】Who is Monroe?

A.An architect.

B.A climate researcher.

C.A VR program developer.

D.A coastal community citizen.

【2】What does the underlined word ‘‘vexing’’ mean in paragraph 2?

A.Original.

B.Bothersome.

C.Dramatic.

D.Convincing.

【3】Why is VR technology employed here?

A.It can introduce technology to the residents.

B.It can predict the climate change accurately.

C.It can cut down the possibilities of climate change.

D.It can show severe results of climate change.

【4】What is the purpose of the program?

A.To inform the residents of the solutions.

B.To advocate the application of VR.

C.To win the residents’ cooperation.

D.To trick more people to believe.

22、An opinion poll was conducted in the early 1990s to find out the cultural attitudes of residents of five countries in Western Europe (Britain, France, Italy, Spain and Germany). One thousand people, forming a representative sample of the adult population, from each of the five participating countries were interviewed.

The poll assumed that literature, history, science, arts, law, economics and so on would be regarded as significant elements of culture by all participants, but it set out to examine the areas which they considered the most important forms of cultural expression. In addition, the poll required interviewees to indicate in a questionnaire the type of education they considered most appropriate for the modern world, the best channels of knowledge and arts they most valued. 【1】

The results of the poll show interesting differences between the participating nations in terms of which components of culture they regard as most important forms of cultural expression. For the French and Italians, literature comes well at the top of the list. 【2】 History occupies second place for the French, the Italians and Germans but is given very low priority by the British. For the Spanish these four areas are more or less equal, with mathematics having a slight edge.

It seems that members of each country in the survey have a common definition of culture but that definition varies from country to country. 【3】 The French and Italians are literary peoples, the British scientific and the Germans practical and hard-working.

France has the distinction, according to the results of the poll, of being the country which provokes most interest from its British. Italian and German neighbors. 【4】 The French also placed Italy first. Italy occupies second place for both the British and the Germans. It would seem, then, that the “literary” nations of France and Italy are more culturally exciting than the scientific British or the practical Germans!

A.In contrast, mathematics is given priority by the British and economics,/politics by the   Germans.

B.There are clear differences in the views of various European nations.

C.The interviewees were also asked which European country they found most attractive from a cultural point of view.

D.Spanish interviewees indicated more interest in Italy than in France.

E.The residents of the five countries of the survey share the view that books are the best way of broadening knowledge.

F.The variations tend to support the national stereotypes we have of one another.

23、   Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.

“I think it’s a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie-Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “It’s hard with kids. You can’t control what they see and that’s one of the things that worries me as a parent.”

There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones. McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success. McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but they're not allowed to use social media. Ms. Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨),” but now they’re seeing the positives (优势). “They come to school and they’re not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.

“It’s been wonderful as for students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen,” Ms. Binnion said. She also leads by example and doesn’t use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if we’ve done it.”

Not everyone agrees with the bans. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr. Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it’s important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in. “A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2020 state-of-play.”

1Why did Madeleine welcome the ban?

A.Teachers find it hard to control kids.

B.Kids behave badly nowadays.

C.School is for studying.

D.Her kids depend too much on phones.

2What can we learn about the ban in McKinnon Secondary School?

A.Students can now see the good of the ban.

B.Some teachers were against it at first.

C.Students can use their phones at lunch breaks.

D.Teachers have stopped using phones at school as well.

3What does Dr. Joanne Orlando think of banning phones in schools?

A.It will disconnect parents and kids.

B.It will cause kids to communicate less.

C.It will make education go back 60 years.

D.It will prevent kids being tech-minded.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Charlie was a rich boy who had more toys than you could imagine. His family had a lot of money, and whenever he liked something, they would buy it for him. In reality, then, he had no idea what things cost, and wouldn’t bother to take care of what he had. Nor did he realize how difficult it was for other children to get toys like the ones he had.

A time came, though, when he was so used to all his toys that he began to want something different. One of his uncles found a fine horse and he gave it to Charlie, as something unusual. Charlie was very excited at having a horse. He learned to ride, and was constantly on his horse, going here and there. However, he treated the horse just as badly as he treated all his other toys, and it soon started looking sick. For the first time in his life Charlie became truly worried. He loved the horse, and the fact that his family had offered to buy him a new one meant nothing to him.

One day, while in the countryside, he saw a little girl with a horse. The girl looked very poor, but the horse seemed happy and looked great. Wondering how she had managed this, Charlie secretly followed them, watching everything they did. First he followed them through the forest, where he saw that she never used the stick and never hit the horse. This was the opposite of what Charlie had done to his horse. Then they came to the stable (马厩), and as soon as they arrived the girl fed and watered the horse. Then she carefully cleaned it. Charlie was surprised. He’d never done any of those things for his horse. He saw that the girl spent a lot of time giving care and attention to her horse, and that she did it all on her own. This had never entered Charlie’s mind; he had always been too busy playing and having fun to look after the horse.

Paragraph 1:

Charlie wanted to change and become like the girl.

Paragraph 2:

As a result, Charlie gave up constantly asking for new toys.
