二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、What does fear make you do? When I feel afraid, I tend to be more hesitant in following my usual patterns. Perhaps it is a strange-looking person hiding nearby or violent dogs barking at me that causes that emotion. Notice that I am just a normal-sized woman whose view of something as dangerous causes me to change. What could the earth’s largest land mammal (哺乳动物) possibly be afraid of? Many, terrifying things. African elephants have totally altered their behavior patterns just to stay alive.

What, you may ask, could possibly bring a threat to these giants? This question can be answered in one simple word: poachers (偷猎者)! They are killing elephants by the tens of thousands. And what is the reason behind all of this killing? Elephant tusks (象牙). These long teeth grow outside the elephants’ mouths throughout their lives. Both males and females have them and use them for feeding, digging and fighting. But those poachers see their tusks as money in their pockets.

According to CITES, Africa will lose one-fifth of its elephants by 2023 if the continuing killing is not stopped. How are elephants dealing with? As a human, I change my behavior when I become afraid, and now we are learning that elephants do the same.

From 2002 to 2009, poaching (illegal hunting and killing) levels were mild, but from 2010 to 2012, the levels increased so violently that a crisis situation occurred. In an attempt to save elephants, several organizations, including Save the Elephants and the Kenya Wildlife Service, attached GPS collars to elephants. They then tracked the elephants’ movements and analyzed the data. Findings show that elephants have become more active at night in locations where the threat of poaching is greatest.

Elephants began migrating and feeding more during nighttime hours and hiding more during the day. Additionally, they have been fleeing from some areas in large numbers to the safety of national parks and protection. With elephants trying to save themselves, how can we not help? Take a simple approach: Stop poaching by not buying ivory products.

22、Shamarr Allen was taking a rest at home one evening last July when he was shocked by the TV news. There had been a gunshot among a group of children in the 7th Ward of New Orleans only a few miles from Allen's home, and a nine-year-old boy named Bryant suffered from severe injury. Allen was horrified and heartbroken. He thought of his own nine-year-old son.

Originally from the city's poor region, Lower 9th Ward, Allen is one of the most celebrated jazz trumpeter(小号吹奏者) in his city. His band, Shamarr Allen & the Underdawgs, has released three albums, and he often appears on local television and works as a street performer. After seeing the heartbreaking news that morning, it didn't take long for Allen to come up with a possible antidote. He had a few spare trumpets lying around. Maybe he could offer them to kids in exchange for their guns.

Allen named the program My Trumpet is My Weapon---after all, it was something of a personal principle. He met with the New Orleans mayor to figure out how to make children feel safe coming forward with their guns, and the chief of police agreed to take apart everything Allen collected.

“Just to see that they actually want to give up their guns, that’s the cool part about it.” says Allen, who has collected seven guns so far, a small but symbolically important start.

But he doesn’t stop with the exchange of gun for instrument. After the exchanges, Allen connects the children with local musicians who give them free virtual trumpet lessons. He also started a GofundMe page to buy more instruments to give away. So far, he has collected over $45,000. More importantly, he has brought hope for his city and young people looking for a better life.

“I just say, 'Look, I come from where you come from, and I can show you the way that got me out,” says Allen. “and music may not be the way for you, but it will at least open your mind to see what's out there.”

【1】Why did Allen feel shocked and sad?

B.A crowd of children hurt Allen's son.

23、JOHANNESBURG—They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad(蟾蜍) has joined that club of clever survivors.

South Africans are shocked at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town, after jumping into a porcelain(瓷器) candlestick(烛台) that was made there. South African officials reportedly planned to put down the creature, fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.

But the toad got a last-minute pardon. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal shelter, after officials decided to find a way to let the toad live. The two-hour fight was a breeze compared to the trip from China, a long way of many weeks and thousands of kilometers across the Indian Ocean.

Airline spokesman Hein Kaiser said the toad got “first-class treatment”, sitting in a transparent plastic container with escort Brett Glasby, an animal welfare inspector. There was even a ceremony, in which the toad’s boarding pass was handed to Glasby.

“He was the star of the show on the flight,” Kaiser said of the amphibious(两栖的) passenger. “I think every passenger stopped to have a look.”

On landing in Johannesburg, the toad was brought out of its container for a celebrity-style photo shoot. Observers said the brown toad seemed like a cool customer. It belongs to the Asian Toad species, which breeds during the monsoon(季风) season. It is believed to have survived the trip from China by hardening its skin to prevent it from drying out, and also by slowing its breathing and heart rate—methods that help the species survive in times of drought.

“We’ve had snakes in imported timber and scorpions(蝎子) in fruit. We were called because the toad was right inside the candlestick, and we had to break it to get it out” Glasby, the inspector, told The Star, a South African newspaper.

A. An Asian toad gets a new home in South Africa.

B. Asian toads can’t get used to the life in South Africa.

A. Because it escaped all attacks and hunts

B. Because it used to stop its breath in winter

C. Because it formed hard skin to protect itself

D. Because it was lucky to be given a chance

4What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Sometimes animal are transported accidentally

B. No one has seen such a big toad in Africa

24、Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people, choice gives birth to anxiety. Interested in the idea “too many choices are dizzy”. I have been conducting an experiment. 【1】

When presented with a menu in a restaurant, I’ll only consider the first few options on each page. I know, it sounds crazy. 【2】 I used to read the menu a long time instead of sitting back and talking to my dining companion. These days I quickly select the best-sounding dishes and then chat and eat. In doing so, I find myself trying new things. The other night, for example, I ordered a smoked chicken salad. If I had permitted myself to glance further down the list, this would never have happened. But guess what? 【3】 So limiting my choices can sometimes lead me to a wider range of experiences.

【4】 I can now access many films and TV series, yet after ten minutes of looking through apps and menus, I will more often than not find myself watching whatever Channel 4 has scheduled at 9 pm. So before I even turn on the TV, I ask myself: what do I want to watch? I think of a program. Then I just watch it.

This devotion to a simpler set of possibilities came in handy when our summer holiday to America was COVID-canceled. I didn’t go through a million TripAdvisor reviews for the best replacements. I simply went on Airbnb, saw what in England was still available and immediately booked the one I could afford. 【5】 And now I can actually focus on enjoying our holiday.

A.It was delicious.

B.It never proved worth a try.

C.But it’s actually quite liberating.

D.It interprets a lifestyle: less is more.

E.The same applies to home entertainment.
