21、Teasing Kids About Their Weight May Make Them Gain More

School can be tough on kids who have overweight or obesity. They’ re often cruelly teased and bullied. 【1】, which was confirmed in a study of Pediatric Obesity. The study found that making fun of kids for their weight is linked to increased weight gain well into adulthood—the more teasing that kids and teens experience, the more weight they may gain.

To assess the link between teasing and weight gain, the author surveyed 110 children and young teens who were either overweight themselves or who had two parents with overweight. 【2】.

During the first visit, the kids were asked whether they had been bullied for their size. Among participants with overweight, 62% reported they had been teased at least once, while 21% of straight-size, at-risk participants reported they had been. 【3】. Whether they had overweight at the study’s start or not, those who reported being teased often for their weight gained 33% more body mass, on average, and 91% more fat per year than their peers who weren’t teased.

【4】. “But we can say weight-based teasing was significantly linked with weight gain over time,” she says.

【5】. Teasing can also lead to increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can stimulate appetite, and increase risk for depression and anxiety—both of which contribute to disordered eating. It also may drive kids away from physical activities like sports and gym classes, where they risk getting made fun of for their size.

A.Teasing might have undefined effects

B.Researchers followed about 8.5 years

C.Bullying may have continuous consequences

D.Others showed shame may cause over-eating

22、The dog Pooch Chi Chi managed to open the door and let a fire crew in after his owner collapsed on the kitchen floor.

Responders were searching for another entrance when they heard a “click” as the dog managed to unlock the door to let them in, They found the man, named only as Mr Green, collapsed on the floor in the kitchen as the fire took hold on the hob. Firefighters then swiftly put out the fire and carried out first aid until paramedics(急救医士)arrived.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said “a potential disaster” was averted with help from the dog. They said they were called to the scene after a smoke detector was activated and a Careline alarm was sounded.

Mr Green initially answered the call but operator at Careline lost communication. Within six minutes, the crew was on scene and investigating. They could hear the alarm but were unable to establish contact with the man inside. With curtains drawn, the crew could not see in-side but could hear a dog barking. They tried the front door, but it wouldn’t open. As the crew looked for another entrance, they heard a “click” and the front door opened. The crew went inside to find a man collapsed on the floor in the kitchen when a fire was beginning to take hold on the cooker. It wasn’t until later in the incident that they discovered that Chi Chi had managed to open the front door and let the crew inside.

Ian Bolton, Crew Manager for Home and Partnerships at Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service added: “Having monitored detection in people’s homes means the fire service are only minutes away from providing lifesaving assistance. This is a real success story and highlights the importance of Careline and the fire service. Careline’s system, combined with the speed of our crews getting to the incident, saved Mr Green’s life. 23、Great Activities for Nature Lovers

Hiking

One of the easiest and most accessible ways to get close to nature is by setting out on a good old fashioned hike. Hiking generally doesn’t require any fancy equipment or special skills, just a piece of map and a thirst for adventure. This activity can be as relaxing as you make it.

Backcountry Camping

Why limit yourself to just a day hike when you can have a full weekend or longer adventure? Backcountry Camping involves packing your tent, sleeping gear, food, and water on your back to set up camp in a remote location. If you’re an experienced hiker and camper, this is an excellent way to test your survival skills and explore the wilderness.

Mountain and Road Biking

Unlike long hikes through the woods, biking allows you to cover more ground and travel farther in nature. Mountain biking typically involves riding up and down steep slopes, between trees, and over rocks. If this sounds too intense or your tires aren’t suited for rugged terrain(地形), consider taking a road bike on paved trails through forest preserves or along country roads.

Gardening

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to travel beyond your own backyard to experience the beauty of nature every day. If your personality is less adventurous or your mobility is restricted, consider planting a garden to grow your own vegetables, fruits, herbs, or flowers. There’s something truly satisfying about mixing up a salad with fresh ingredients you grew yourself. One of the best parts about spending time in nature is that it doesn’t have to break your budget and anyone can do it.

【1】What does hiking need for hikers?

A.A world map.

B.A strong desire.

C.Practical skills.

D.Necessary equipment.

【2】Where will you go to show your survival potential in the wild?

24、I am from Argentina, and I started to study Chinese in 2009 out of curiosity about Chinese characters. During the learning process, although I had to wake up early every weekend and take a two-hour bus ride to class, learning Chinese every time was an enjoyable experience for me. Chinese characters not only look very beautiful, but also have deep meanings.

In 2014, I was given an opportunity to study at Jilin University in China and was surprised by everything I saw when I first came to this beautiful country. During my study, I met lots of friends from all over the world, and visited a lot of famous places in China. After I returned to Argentina, I wanted to share my experience of learning Chinese with more Argentine people, letting them know the beauty of China.

Fortunately, my application for a Master’s degree of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) at Jilin University was approved and I came to China for the second time. During my two years of studying for my Master s degree, the joy of learning Chinese became the pleasure of studying Chinese. In 2019, I joined the PhD program of the China Studies Program at Jilin University, trying to achieve my PhD to study Chinese in greater depth.

When the COVID-19 broke out, I created my own bilingual official account online to share my views of life and learning experience. As for me, the joy of studying Chinese became that of spreading Chinese.

Chinese has created unlimited opportunities in my life and opened the door to a new world for me, making my dream come true. I hope you will join me to learn Chinese, to understand Chinese culture, to feel the charm of Chinese language and Chinese culture, and to give yourself a chance to create unlimited possibilities.
