二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、It’s an overcast day in Windsor, with the weather threatening to change the location for an exclusive sit-down between legendary ethologist Dr. Jane Goodall and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Here is а conversation from one of Vogue’s past issues in which the two discuss her life-long study of chimpanzees, the environment and our responsibility to it.

Prince Harry: Jane, you have extreme empathy for all animals, especially primates, and have connected with them in a way that few other people have. What did your study of chimpanzees teach you?

Dr. Jane Goodall: From studying chimps and seeing all their similarities to our own species, it has become obvious to me that we have inherited some of our ancestors’ more aggressive tendencies. When you look around the world, they’re everywhere. We can all easily get angry. But with our brain, we mostly control these tendencies to anger. So how is it possible that the most intellectual creature that’s ever walked on the planet, that’s sent a rocket to Mars from which a little robot is slowly moved about in order to take photos, has continued to willfully destroy its only home? There seems to be a disconnect between our clever brain and the heart, love and compassion which we all universally share for one another.

Prince Harry: You’ve been known first and foremost as a world-famous primatologist, but moved on at some point to focus on people and the human issues around conservation. When did that shift happen and why?

Dr. Jane Goodall: It happened in 1986. I helped to organize a conference to bring scientists together to learn about comparative chimp behavior in different environments. I went as a scientist and left as a spokesperson for the environment and animals. It came to a head when I flew over Gombe State, Nigeria. It had been part of the forest belt in the 1960s, but by the 1990s it was a tiny island surrounded by completely bare hills. The locals were struggling to survive. That’s when it hit me: If we don’t help these people, we can’t even begin to try to save the chimps.

Prince Harry: How do you remain hopeful?

Dr. Jane Goodall: First of all, youth. Second, the amazing human intellect. Our intellect really can help us live in greater harmony and leave lighter ecological footprints. Next comes the resilience of nature. There are no bare hills around Gombe anymore. Where places have been destroyed, there are incredible projects going on. The last reason for hope is the indomitable human spirit.

Prince Harry: You founded the global youth program Roots & Shoots in 1991. Specifically, what’s your greatest achievement?

Dr. Jane Goodall: Empowering young people so that they understand that they can make a difference. When I was ten years old and wanted to go to Africa, everybody laughed at me. It was only my mother who said, “If you really want this, you’ll have to work really hard and take advantage of every opportunity.” And I wish she was around to know the number of people who said, “Jane, thank you. You’ve taught me because you did it. I can do it, too.”

【1】According to Dr. Jane Goodall, she remains hopeful about the survival of mankind because of________.

①the brilliant mind of humans

②the ordered harmony of nature

③the ability of nature to recover

④the youthful generations

⑤the global youth program she founded

⑥the great perseverance of people

A.①②⑤⑥

B.①③④⑥

C.①③⑤⑥

D.②③④⑥

【2】According to the article, Dr. Jane Goodall moved on to focus on people and the human issues________.

A.when she found that chimpanzees were destroying their only home

B.when she saw all the similarities between humans and chimpanzees

C.after the global youth program Roots & Shoots was founded in 1991

D.after realizing that she could not help the chimps without helping the people

【3】Which of the following statements is true according to the article?

A.From her studies of chimpanzees, Dr. Jane Goodall has learned that they have inherited their aggressive tendencies from human beings.

B.In 1986, Prince Harry organized a conference to bring scientists together to learn about comparative chimp behavior in different environments.

C.The locals from Gombe State had been struggling to survive since the 1960s because their home was a tiny island surrounded by completely bare hills.

D.As far as Dr. Jane Goodall is concerned, her greatest achievement has been helping young people to realize that they can have a significant impact on the world.

22、It was a hot, humid day, and my brother Walt and I had decided that the only way to survive it would be to go swimming in a deep swimming hole across Mr. Blickez’s pasture(牧场) and through some woods.

The only problem with our plan was that this pasture was guarded by a huge, mean Hereford bull.Mr. Blickez had told us that Elsie was the meanest bull in the township, maybe even the county, and we believed him.But the hotter it got, the more we thought there was something fishy about his claim. For one thing, we remembered Mr. Blickez liked telling tall tales; for another, Elsie seemed like an odd name for a bull.

Finally, I talked Mom into asking permission for us to walk through the pasture, but then another problem surfaced.Mom said she would talk to Mr. Blickez if we would take our cousin Joanie along with us. Joanie was almost two years older than me and a head taller. If her teasing ever got around my grade school, it would be all over for me.In fact, I still had a headache from a quarrel with her that morning.“I’m not going swimming with that dumb girl cousin.” I told my mom.

“Either Joanie goes with, or you stay home alone,” Mom said in her serious tone. I gave in and we set out.On our way across the pasture, Walt yelled suddenly.Elsie had approached him quietly and was licking(舔) his back.Joanie and I dove under the wire fence, but while I was on the ground I looked up and saw that Elsie wasn’t a big mean bull after all. She was going to keep licking my brother’s back as long as he stood still.

We had many good days growing up and visiting our secret swimming hole guarded by the so-called “big mean bull”.And as it turned out, for a girl cousin, Joanie hasn’t been too bad. She’s been one of my best friends over the years.

23、Eastern barred bandicoots (袋狸) once were a common sight in the plains of western Victoria and into South Australia. But by the 1980s, just one population of between 150 and 200 bandicoots survived.

In 1988, the Victoria state government formed a recovery team that brought together government agencies, Zoos Victoria, volunteer groups and other people. That year, scientists removed 40 bandicoots from this population to form a captive breeding (圈养繁殖) program. Soon after, eastern barred bandicoots disappeared from the wild in Victoria. The only remaining breeding population existed in small pens at Woodlands Historic Park. “Without the captive program, the species would be extinct.” Scientists say.

Breeding was one thing. Re-establishing wild populations was altogether more difficult. Six times captive-born bandicoots were set free into the wild. All six reintroductions failed when foxes killed the bandicoots.

What changed everything was the reintroduction of bandicoots to Phillip Island in 2017 and French Island in 2019. Fox-free French and Phillip islands offered just over 70 square miles of bandicoot habitat, and the bandicoots have already begun breeding and expanding (扩大) their range across these islands.

After scientists had established populations on islands, researchers looked to expand their efforts to open grasslands. In 2015, David Williams began training his Maremma dogs. The idea worked this way: Because bandicoots live alone, the Maremmas would look after sheep in large open grasslands where bandicoots lived. As long as there were sheep in the bandicoots’ territory (领地), the Maremmas remained, and as long as the dogs were around, the foxes were far less likely to remain.

Over the past two years, the recovery team has reintroduced 40 bandicoots into two places in western Victoria, with two to three Maremmas and hundreds of sheep at each site to keep them company. Scientists can’t yet say whether the experiment is working. But some of the bandicoots have bred, and initial camera-trap evidence suggests that foxes, if they pass through the area at all, rarely stay for long.

【2】What led to the failure of all 6 bandicoot reintroductions?

A.Food shortage.

B.Lack of habitats.

C.Threats of natural enemies.

D.Insufficient captive-born bandicoots.

【3】Why did William train Maremma dogs?

A.To take good care of his sheep.

B.To keep bandicoot out of fox territory.

C.To help dogs and bandicoots live in harmony.

D.To reintroduce bandicoots to the open grasslands.

【4】What can be inferred about the program in western Victoria?

A.It has completely failed.

B.Its result remains to be seen.

C.It turns out an instant success.

24、China’s existing COVID-19 containment strategy, characterized by firm and rapid response to cut its transmission and block new outbreaks, should be sufficient for dealing with the new Omicron variant(变种)of the novel coronavirus, health experts and officials said recently.

They added that the country’s dynamic zero-case policy should continue to be enforced this winter and spring, as new modeling shows that dropping it prematurely would risk causing “a huge outbreak”.

Wu Zunyou, a chief epidemiologist, said the new variant appears to be more contagious(传染的)than the Delta variant due to its exceptionally high number of spike mutations.

“But no matter how the virus mutates, regular public health measures, such as wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and washing hands, will be effective against all variants,” Wu said.

Zhang Wenhong, a well-known doctor from Shanghai, said China’s current “rapid response and dynamic zeroing of new infections” can deal with all variants.

The strategy has also enabled China to win a window of opportunity in terms of building up scientific support to fight the virus, he said. Ongoing work includes increasing reserves of vaccines(疫苗)and drugs to support the global battle against the pandemic, and boosting inventories(存货)of China’s public health and medical resources.

According to Wu Zunyou, China’s overall epidemic situation remains stable and under control against a backdrop of surging infections globally. “This remarkable outcome is largely due to the central approach of interrupting the spread of the virus, blocking new outbreaks and implementing quarantine(隔离)for incoming travelers,” he said.

“By the most conservative estimates, the strategy had avoided 47.8 million COVID-19 infections and 950, 000 related deaths in China,” he said.

As the outlook for the pandemic remains serious for this winter and spring, Wu said these measures should continue to be enforced.

“Adjustment(调整)of virus control measures should be done extremely carefully and with every detail and procedure being taken into consideration, so as to avoid making mistakes or taking the wrong path,” he said.
