二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The world is changing so fast that English, perhaps the most worldly of languages, is struggling to keep up.

Learners in the future are likely to be much younger. Young children are often said to be better at language learning than older learners but they also have special challenges. Young children dont usually have the kind of instrumental motivation and determination for learning English that older learners often have. English lessons must therefore be fun and rewarding.

The reasons why people learn English are also changing. Globalization is bringing together more people than ever who speak different languages and who are turning to English as the means of communication. The English learners of the future may be less worried about sounding exactly like a native speaker and more concerned about how to use English effectively in cross-cultural communication. We may be hearing more non-native speakers in dialogues and a wider range of the New Englishes now used around the world.

Technology will allow English to come to you, rather than you having to go to a special place to learn English.

Learning English has always involved both pain and pleasure, private effort and social activity. Traditional learning provided take-it or leave-it mixes of these as well as of content but in future learners will be able to choose a plan which suits their cultural and psychological dispositions(性情), or their particular needs at that moment. They, rather than their teachers, will decide how, what and when they will learn.

Above all, learning English is about communication and an important benefit of learning English is being able to exchange views and make friends with people all over the world. Despite the growing independence of learners, trusted institutions and brand names will remain important.

22、With more than 46,000 of them in the UK, convenience stores used to be a feature on almost every residential corner—but the number of corner shop is in decline. The growth of the corner shop was prevented by the cruel march of the Big Four supermarkets’ formats when Tesco bought the T&S group of convenience stores. Even more significantly, corner shops are starting to change hands as their original owners retire- So can the tradition be saved?

Sure, there’s always a way out. Far from a struggling corner shop, Wigston Fields News & Deli is becoming a lighthouse for food lovers across the region. Pratik was named Local Food Hero by the regional Great Taste Club in their annual awards in 2019 and his customers value what News & Deli offers.

“I feel proud to continue my parents’ legacy, ” says Pratik. “I barely set foot in the shop until my mother passed away in 2012, but then it became important for me to continue the work she loved. I am proud to take the flag from her and continue to serve my community. ”

At present, he is well on his way to achieving a commercial as well as community success. On the shop’s popular Facebook page customers share orders for special menus of locally produced food and enjoy the wonder about Pratik’s samosa (萨莫萨三角饺) consumption. These samosas are held to be the best in the city, so the tiny shop sells nearly 900 samosas a week, up from just 50 a week 3 years ago.

“I hope our success will inspire others and show that shop-keeping is a rewarding choice, not a dead-end job, ” Pratik says. “We work hard, and our customers have become like family to us, so I can’t imagine enjoying any other job quite as much. ”

This is one of independent corner shops whose fortunes are on the rise. Surely, we’ll see more in the future.

23、The rechargeable lithium-ion (锂离子) battery market is worth more than $50 billion. Lithium-ion batteries, whose demand continues to go up day by day, are used in a wide range of electronic devices. They are made of four main components, and cathode (阴极) is one of them. The cathode’s active material type is what determines the capacity of a battery.

A recent study, led by Wang Yan, a material scientist of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, finds that lithium-ion batteries made with recycled cathodes work better than those with new cathodes.

“ The battery industry is expected to soar in the next decade. This high demand has led companies to go to extremes, like increasing deep-sea mining, to gain access to the minerals used in lithium-ion batteries, ” Wang said. “ Mining minerals will have environmental impacts. Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries offers a way out. ”

But until now, the prospect of using recycled materials in lithium-ion batteries has some manufacturers (制造商) worrying that it could impact performance. Thus, lithium-ion batteries are still not widely recycled. Aware of decreasing resources and environmental impact. Wang and other researchers set out to find a way to make recycling lithium-ion batteries economically practical. Through experiments, they could recover more than 90% of the key metals from spent batteries. These recovered metals became the basis of the new recycled battery’s cathode’s active material.

In tests between Wang’s team’s recycled batteries and brand-new batteries of the same composition, the recycled batteries outperform (胜过) the new ones in their ability to maintain capacity. It took 11,600 charge cycles for recycled cathode batteries to lose 30 percent of their original capacity. That was about 50 percent better than the 7,600 observed cycles for new cathode batteries, the team reported. Those thousands of extra cycles could translate into years of better battery performance, even after repeated use and recharging.

【1】What can we learn about lithium-ion batteries from the first paragraph?

A.They are high in price.

B.They are in great demand.

C.They are limited in use.

D.They are simple in composition.

C.Serious environmental problems.

D.Difficult recycling techniques.

【4】Which of the following details best supports the main idea of the text?

C.Scientists can recover key materials from spent batteries.

D.Recycled batteries outperform new ones in charging circles.
