二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、It was dinner time for the Rangers, a group of mostly Indigenous (本地的) Australians who had spent a long day cleaning up the polluted beaches of the continent’s northern coast. Soon they would be eating freshly caught fish and seafood cooked under the stars on an open fire, as their ancestors did.

The Rangers are of more than 100 Indigenous groups spread across Australia who have taken on the job of protecting the land of their forefathers. In Arnhem Land, they are the protectors of 3,300 square miles of land and sea. They comb the beaches by hand, picking up as much rubbish as possible. The task is very difficult as each day it delivers waves of new rubbish.

For the Rangers, cleaning the beaches is more than a vacation. For a people whose culture is strongly tied to the land, protecting the environment is equal to preserving their history.

However, colonization forcefully broke their connection to the land generations ago. Indigenous people were displaced and their cultural practices outlawed.Tens of thousands of years of traditional land management ended, and as a result many parts of the country now face serious disasters from invasive plant and animal species, bush fires and land mismanagement.

In recent years, the government has restored more than 20 percent of Australia’s land to indigenous owners.Since 2007, the Indigenous Rangers Organizations have been at work protecting this land.

Luck, one of the few nonIndigenous employees working with the Rangers, said the combination of old and new techniques and an appreciation for the culture of indigenous workers has been critical to the program’s success.

“You are working with staff who see the world different to you, so there is a much higher focus on the cultural aspects of work and life,” he said.

“Being a ranger is a source of confidence. You feel strong,” said Terence, a senior ranger. “Here we still live on the land. The culture is still alive.”

A.The polluted land needs better management.

B.Their cultural practices were outlawed.

C.The people were too strong.

D.The land belongs to them.

【4】What can we learn from the last three paragraphs?

A.Not many employees are the Indigenous Australians.

B.Culture is important to the Indigenous Australians.

D.Both Luck and Terence are rangers.

22、   Due to a disease, Cillian Jackson, 2, can't walk. But the boy now motors around in style, thanks to some students at his local high school.

It all started when Cillian's doctor told his parents about a program called Go Baby Go, which provides modified (改进的) toy cars to children with limited mobility.

They looked into it, but there wasn't a Go Baby Go branch near the Jackson family's home in Farmington. And motorized wheelchairs can cost more than $1, 000. So the parents turned to the robotics team at Farmington High School and asked if the students would be willing to take on the project.

The students accepted the challenge. Using plans and models from Go Baby Go, they got to work, modifying a Power Wheels toy car to fit little Cillian and give him more freedom in his movements.

“Everything that we've been doing for robotics competitions could be directly related to this challenge,” robotics coach Spencer Elvebak said. “The students did the programming. They did all the wiring. They did all the work.”

“In education in general we tell students we're giving them the tools to apply in the future and do something with this,” Elvebak said. “Here's a perfect example. Students do have the skills to wire, code, program and approach an engineering challenge.”

The robotics students met Cillian last week after presenting him with his car last December. The toy car has been a success. Cillian's parents usually carry him around, they said. Now Cillian has more control over where he goes. “When he gets in his car, he can stop and look at all of these things he's never had time to explore.” said Cillian's dad, Tyler Jackson. Cillian's mom, Krissy Jackson, added, “It really helped with his sense of discovery and curiosity. Having the car has really given him the ability to make choices on his own.”

“The modified car allows Cillian to practice for when he finally qualifies to get a motorized wheelchair, which he will need to attend school.” his parents said.

【1】What did Cillian's parents ask Farmington High School to do?

A.Collect money for Cillian.

B.Join the program Go Baby Go.

C.Make a modified car for Cillian.

D.Allow Cillian to attend the school.

【2】What do we know about Farmington High School's students?

A.They won a prize for the project.

B.They gave up the project halfway.

C.They carried out the project as requested.

D.They had their teachers help with the project.

【3】What did Elvebak say about the project?

A.It was a waste of time.

B.It was too difficult for students.

C.It had nothing to do with what students had studied.

D.It was a golden chance for students to apply what they had learned.

【4】How did Cillian's parents feel about the modified car?

A.It needed to be improved.

B.It was much too expensive.

C.It helped a lot in Cillian's life.

D.It would be a hit in the market.

23、   Late one afternoon, Raphael Kaplan and his family were out walking near their home in Los Angeles, Calif., the second largest U.S. city.【1】

“They were ‘hanging out’”, he says, “just lying down and waiting for us to pass.”【2】The fourth grader says he sees coyotes all the time, often at that golf course. He's also seen them walking down his street.

Coyotes look like medium-sized dogs or small wolves with short gray and brown fur.【3】They will eat just about anything and can learn to survive in nearly any environment. Before 1700, coyotes only lived in the midwestern and southwestern United States and Mexico, but then people wiped out nearly all of North America's wolves because they sometimes kill farm animals. This opened up space for chores.

【4】Some considered them to be pests. During the middle of the 20th century, the U.S. government poisoned around 6.5 million coyotes. Killing them is still legal in most U.S. states. Hunters and trappers kill hundreds of thousands every year.

Encounters with coyotes happen regularly across the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico and parts of Central America. In Chicago, Illinois, for instance, coyotes once lived on the top floor of a parking garage across from Soldier Field, the home stadium of the Chicago Bears football team. In 2015, New York City police officers in trucks, cars and helicopters chased a coyote through Riverside Park in Manhattan.【5】After three hours, they gave up the chase. The coyote had simply hidden itself too well. Occasionally, coyotes may bite or attack people or their pets. However, coyotes mostly avoid people. Raphael is glad he's gotten to see them so many times. He's also helped study them.

A.Coyotes are kind and beautiful.

B.People tried to get rid of coyotes, too.

C.But they are a separate species, Canis latrans.

D.Are coyotes moving into your neighborhood?

E.They aimed to move the animal out of the city.

F.This wasn't an unusual experience for 10-year-old Raphael.

G.He looked through a fence surrounding a golf course and saw two coyotes.

24、Guide to Hiking on the Appalachian Trail

How do I “Leave No Trace on the Appalachian Trail?”

At about 2,189 miles, the Appalachian Trail is the longest single unit of the National Park System. With the number of people visiting this place increasing each year, the chances are great that any of us may damage the natural environment along the Trail and affect the experience for others. So please do your part by following these hiking and camping practices, and encourage others to learn about and adopt these techniques.

1. Plan ahead and prepare.

Evaluate the risks associated with your outing, identify campsites and destinations in advance, and use maps and guides. Prepare for extreme weather, dangers, and emergencies — especially the cold — to avoid impacts from searches, rescues, and campfires. Learn when areas are most crowded and try to avoid those times.

2. Dispose of waste properly.

Pack out all trash and food waste, including that left behind by others. Don’t bury trash or food, and don’t try to burn packaging materials in campfires. Use the privy (茅房) for human waste only. Do not add trash. If there is no privy, dispose of human waste by burying it in a hole, a hole at least 200 feet (80 steps) from campsites, water sources and shelters, and well away from trails.

3. Leave what you find.

Leave plants, cultural artifacts (器物) and other natural objects where you found them for others to enjoy. Do not damage live trees or plants; green wood burns poorly. Collect only firewood that is dead, down, and no larger than your wrist. Leave dead standing trees and dead limbs on standing trees for the wildlife.

4. Minimize campfire impacts.

Use stoves for cooking — if you need a fire, build one only where it’s legal and in an existing fire ring. Keep fires small. Never leave your campfire unattended, and drown it when you leave. Do not try to burn trash, including plastic, glass, cans, tea bags, food, or anything with food on it. These items do not burn thoroughly. They create harmful fumes (烟雾), and attract wildlife like skunks and bears.

5. Respect wildlife.

Don’t feed or disturb wildlife. Store food properly to avoid attracting bears, varmints, and rodents. If you bring a pet, keep it leashed (用皮带系住).

【1】Before you hike on the Appalachian Trail, you are advised to ________.

A.leave your pet dog at home

B.bring some food for the wildlife there

C.prepare for bad weather and emergencies

D.avoid crowded periods and book a hotel in advance

【2】The underlined phrase “dispose of” probably means ________.

A.collect

B.store

C.make use of

D.get rid of

【3】If you need a fire on the Appalachian Trail, you should ________.

A.collect firewood that is larger than your wrist

B.keep it small and drown it when you go away

C.burn or bury your trash before you leave

D.use it to drive away wildlife like skunks and bears

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I first got the bird, it must have only just been hatched. Its mother had disappeared, leaving it alone and shivering in the face of the north wind. I decided to take it straight back and build it a new home.

At that time, we grew a great many flowers in our house. Next to one hanging orchid (兰花) I hung another empty flowerpot and it was in this pot that the bird was to have its new home. When Dad got home, he immediately discovered the new addition to our family. Without saying a word, he turned around and left the house. After some time, he returned and I saw that he had a handful of grass and pine needles. Obviously, Dad thought the nest I had made was far too rough and so he had decided to decorate it himself.

“A bird born at this time of year won't survive the winter.” In spite of this prediction on the bird's future, Dad very carefully fashioned the nest himself. Soon I found “Nuo Nuo” (Dad had named him) had started to grow feathers. They looked like such fine little hairs that you could only notice them if you looked really closely. I only discovered them because every day I would cup him in my hands and look at him.

Dad probably realized that he had been a little cruel in his prediction. You see, he had already started training Nuo Nuo to walk. As you know, Nuo Nuo lived in a flowerpot, not a cage or anything. When he had nothing else to do, he walked around his little home. There were times when he was a bit naughty too and he jumped down onto our dining table.

注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右。

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

It was obvious that Nuo Nuo didn't realize he was a bird.
