But he had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop the floor. “I was tired of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing () out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, There s gotta be a better way.

How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markers.

Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷)buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed. Mangano was sure it would sell if they’d let her do the on-camera display. She said, “Get me on that stage, and I will sell this mop because it’s a great item.”

So QVC, a multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping, took a chance on her. “ I got onstage and the phones went crazy. We sold every mop in minutes.”

22、Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.

Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person's thoughts.

In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.

“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.

The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.

Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”

He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.

1BCI is a technology that can ________.

A. help the disabled to recover

B. control a person's thoughts

C. help to update computer systems

D. link the human brain with computers

【2】How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?

A. By talking to the machine.

B. By controlling his muscles.

C. By using his mind.

D. By moving his hand.

【3】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

B. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled

C. New Findings About How the Human Brain Works

D. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center

23、Four Tips to Improve Your English Vocabulary

Learning vocabulary is a big part of learning a language. The more English words you learn, the better you can communicate your needs, ideas, thoughts and feelings to others in English. 【1】 Here are four tips for better vocabulary learning.

●Write down new words.

It’s a really good idea to write down useful new vocabulary. 【2】 Plus, lots of people learn better when they see things written on paper, rather than just hearing them.

Revise new vocabulary regularly.

So, you’ve got an English notebook full of useful vocabulary to remember. But did you know that if you don’t look again at the new words and phrases, you only remember on average 20-25 percent of them? 【3】

So make five minutes each day to revise your English vocabulary. The more you look backwards, the faster you go forwards!

●Learn from context.

“Context” means the text that comes before and after a particular word. 【4】 It helps you guess the meaning of words you don’t know, it shows you how a word is used in a sentence, and it helps you remember the word for longer.

This means learning vocabulary by reading and listening is more effective than trying to study word lists. It also means that it’s better to make a note of how a word is used in a sentence rather than just the word on its own.

【5】

Researchers have found that you need to see or hear a word on average ten times to remember it. But you learn it much faster when you’re actively using a word.

So, besides getting as much exposure to English as you can, take every opportunity to communicate in English with other people.

A.Use it or lose it!

B.See or hear a word more times.

C.New words are usually hard to remember.

D.That’s a shocking waste of time and effort!

E.It also refers to the situation in which a word is used.

F.The act of writing the words helps you remember them better.

G.So what can you do to build your English vocabulary quickly and effectively?

24、You’re looking for a holiday with a difference? It’s on offer right here! Come with us on a very special tour of the great southern continent Antarctica. It’s the only untouched wilderness left on our planet. For 10 months of the year, the continent is inaccessible by ships. Consequently, our tours are conducted in the brief period in late spring when the ice has melted and we can reach Antarctica.

So why should I go there?

Antarctica may lack man-made attractions, but its natural beauty is breathtaking. You’ll want to tell your grandchildren about this trip in years to come. Ninety-eight percent of this continent is covered with ice, which contains 70 per cent of the world’s fresh water, although it receives very little rainfall.

What kind of things could I see and do there?

Our tours are conducted in summer, but you have to remember that summer is six months later in the Southern Hemisphere. Apart from the Arctic region, Antarctica is one of the two areas on earth where you can enjoy 24 hours of sunlight. To get there, we have our own ship, which is equipped with a helicopter and a landing pad. Once there you’ll be able to observe penguins and birds, and even watch whales and seals in the ocean.

Do your tours damage the environment?

No, not at all. We don’t disturb the wildlife, and we remove all the rubbish that we produce. We strictly follow the guidelines contained in the 1991 Antarctica Agreement, which bans oil exploration and protects wildlife.

How long does a tour last?

That depends on which tour package you choose. You can visit the Antarctic region for as long as a month or, if you depart from Australia, you can see the Antarctic continent from the air in just one day. We will fly you over the continent so you can see it from the comfort of your seat on one of our aircraft. The exact route depends on the weather on the day of the . tour, but normally the flights pass over the Antarctic coastline and then head inland over vast landscapes formed by ice and dramatic mountain ranges.

That sounds really interesting. How do I make a booking?

South Pole Tours are based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Call us on 25674874 today!
