二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、A crocodile (鳄鱼) in Uganda gently moves her babies into her mouth. Behind her frightening teeth, she carefully holds the babies and carries them to a nearby river. But what the crocodile doesn’t realize is that one of the babies in her mouth is not a real baby. It’s a robot with a hidden camera in one eye.

The robot is one of 34 lifelike creations designed to secretly record animal behavior (行为) for the PBS Nature miniseries Spy (间谍) in the Wild. Director John Downer says these spy cameras have taken people deeper into the wild than ever before. But he believes the series is more than entertainment (娱乐).

“It’s all about feeling close to wildlife,” Downer told TFK. By understanding their behavior, we can understand animals in a way that’s really good. It can help us to pay more attention to animals, and finally to take care of them.”

Downer worked with film-makers, scientists, and engineers to create the lifelike spy cameras. Each was built to make realistic (逼真的) movements and noises. This allows the robots to more easily infiltrate the animal world.

For example, Downer s team built a wild-dog spy that takes a bow when meeting other dogs. It’s a way of relaxing other animals.

According to producer Rob Pilley, their realistic appearance allows the spy cameras to catch surprising animal behaviors in the wild. “We see the animals doing things that scientists have never seen before,” he says.

In a filming first, a spy robot caught a chimp caring for an abandoned (丢弃的) baby cat. “The chimp tried to keep it and protect it against the other chimps,” says Downer. His team has shared such parts of the films with scientists. The goal is to help them to do the scientific research.

When it comes to Spy in the Wild for raising awareness about the natural world, Cullen Hanks, a biologist at Cornell University, says, “It’s taking people closer to wildlife and helping them connect with nature.”

【3】What does the underlined word “infiltrate” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

23、More than two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight and half of them are trying to lose weight. According to a recent study, led by Evan Forman, a psychology professor from Drexel University, a smartphone app called OnTrack can predict ahead of time when users are likely to give up their weight loss plans and help them stay on track.

People on weight loss plans often experience difficulties, which can prevent successful weight loss or even lead to weight regain, according to Forman. The study evaluated the effectiveness of the app among weight loss program participants and individuals(个人)attempting to follow an online weight management plan from Weight Watchers for eight weeks.

OnTrack uses advanced statistical methods — machine learning —to learn over time a user’s individual patterns of eating. Specifically, it learns patterns that are predictive of staying on one’s weight loss plan and patterns that are predictive of giving up one's plan. When the app detects the risk of giving up is high, it sends a special coaching message that matches the reasons someone is at risk. For example, the app can predict a person is eating late at night because of being bored at home with tempting(诱人的)food. The predictions get better over time as the app learns a user s behavioral patterns.

According to Forman, over the course of the study, participants averaged a 3.13 percent weight loss and reduction in unplanned giving up.

The next step is a clinical test to confirm the app's ability as a weight loss tool.

【1】What is OnTrack used to do?

A.To plan a route for its users.

B.To keep track of phones.

C.To predict possible mental diseases.

D.To remind people to keep dieting.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The main patterns of healthy eating.

B.The basic principles of OnTrack.

C.The development of machine learning.

D.The importance of weight loss plans.

【3】Which of the following would Forman agree with?

A.OnTrack is a clinically proven weight loss tool.

B.OnTrack does very well in predicting.

C.OnTrack may be double-edged.

D.OnTrack is popular among young people.

【4】Why does the author write the text?

A.To introduce a smartphone app.

B.To analyze what leads to the failure of weight loss.

C.To encourage people to keep fit.

D.To give tips on losing weight.

24、Austrian company Tec-Innovation recently unveiled smart shoes that use ultrasonic sensors (声波传感器) to help people suffering from blindness or vision impairment (损伤) to detect obstacles (障碍物) up to four metres away.

Known as InnoMake, the smart shoe aims to become an alternative to the decades-old walking stick that millions of people around the world depend on to get around as safely as possible. The currently available model relies on sensors to detect obstacles and warns the wearer via vibration (振动) and an audible alarm sounded on a Bluetooth-linked smart phone. That sounds impressive enough, but the company is already working on a much more advanced version that includes cameras and artificial intelligence to not only detect obstacles but also their nature.

“Not only is the warning that I am facing an obstacle relevant, but also the information about what kind of obstacle I am facing. Because it makes a big difference whether it’s a wall, a car or a staircase,” Markus Raffer, one of the founders of Tec-Innovation, told TechXplore. “Ultrasonic sensors on the toe of the shoe detect obstacles up to four metres away. The wearer is then warned by vibration and/or audio signals. This works very well and is already a great help to me personally.”

The current version of the InnoMake shoe is already available for purchase on the Tec-Innovation website, for 3,200 per pair. The advanced system is integrated in the front of the shoes, in a waterproof and dustproof case. It is powered by a heavy-duty battery that can last for up to one week, depending on use. The battery can be charged in just three hours, using a USB cable.

The next step for Tec-Innovation is to use the data collected by its system to create a kind of street view navigation map for visually impaired people. “As it currently stands, only the wearer benefits in each case from the data the shoe collects as he or she walks. It would be much more sustainable if this data could also be made available to other people as a navigation aid,” computer scientist Friedrich Fraundorfer explained.

【1】What does the underlined word “unveiled” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.Purchased.

B.Launched.

C.Evaluated.

D.Promoted.

【2】What is required when a person uses InnoMake?

A.An ultrasonic sensor.

B.A walking stick.

C.A smart phone.

D.A new camera.

【3】What can we know about Markus Raffer?

A.He himself is visually impaired.

B.He is faced with a lot of obstacles.

C.He is the founder of TechXplore.

D.He has different opinions from others.

【4】Where does the text probably appear?

A.In a lab research.

B.In a book review.

C.In a health magazine.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、请阅读下面的文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章

Researchers in the Netherlands report that children who get more exercise, whether at school or at other places, tend to have higher scores on standardized tests. In a review of 14 studies that looked at physical activity and academic performance investigators found that the more children moved? the better their grades were in school, particularly in the basic subjects of math, English and reading.

The data will certainly fuel the ongoing debate over whether physical education classes for senior three students should be reduced or even cancelled. The arguments against physical education have included concerns that gym time may be taking away study time. With standardized test scores in the US dropping in recent years, some administrators believe students need to spend more time in the classroom instead of on the playground. But as these findings show, exercise and academics may not be consequently exclusive. Physical activity can improve blood flow to the brain, memory, attention and creativity, which are essential to learning.

(写作内容)

1. 用约3个单词概述上述信息的主要内容;

2. 谈谈你是否赞成高三学生应该减少体育课时间,并用2-3个理山或论据支撑你的观点。
