22、Transport is undergoing a massive transformation so it can meet society’s demands for a low- carbon economy. Introducing electric vehicles (EV) and declining gasoline use are helping, but zero-carbon hydrogen can speed up both the transition (转变) and long-term decarbonization of transport.
In the US, transportation produces the largest share of all greenhouse gas emissions (排放) in the economy at 29%, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. More than 90% of transport fuel is petrol based, but if more vehicles used hydrogen, emissions of this kind would plummet.
However, hydrogen is not considered an ideal replacement for gasoline as an engine fuel for cars because it is harder to store safely. And while fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that turn hydrogen into electricity can compete with EV performance-and even out-compete them on range and refill time, extra energy is needed to produce the hydrogen needed for fuel. Also, finding investment for storage, pipelines and fuel stations is still a challenge for many nations.
Currently, governments worldwide are backing green hydrogen projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in heavy industries like freight (货运), steel, and energy storage. But hydrogen transport will need rapid production methods to create the fuel needed for the world’s road fleet.
Thankfully, research is advancing all the time. Nanoscale (纳米级的) thin films are applied to improving the chemical process to rapidly harvest hydrogen from the seawater. The same technology has been successfully used in solar power devices with higher efficiency-to-cost rates. Since hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and as seawater makes up about 96% of all water on Earth, there is a virtually limitless supply.
Even wastewater and solid waste can create green hydrogen. Researchers at Princeton University are using sunlight to separate hydrogen from industrial wastewater. Chemical plants that currently face high costs for cleaning wastewater could transform it into clean hydrogen supplies.

23、 Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five this mundane task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. He didn’t come home as much as he used to – just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Today, I’m no longer a kid. I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has got back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said, “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb?” I looked at him a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.
I passed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet.
After so many years, he still organizes his personal items in the same meticulous way. I guess some things never change. And for that, I’m glad.
【1】What caused the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me?
A.Generation gap.
B.Dad’s failure in business.
C.My ignorance of Dad.
D.Dad’s absence from the family.
【2】Which of the following can best describe Dad?
A.Gentle but strict.
B.Hardworking and caring.
C.Cautious and realistic.
D.Demanding but patient.
【3】Why did Dad ask his daughter to clean his comb before her birthday?
A.To give her a lesson.
B.To follow his old habit.
C.To fix their relationship.
D.To praise her helpfulness.
【4】Which saying concludes the text best?
A.Yesterday once more.
B.Let bygones be bygones.
C.Some things never change.
D.Like father, like daughter.
24、I’ve been wondering how kids themselves, especially young ones, define(定义) play. It turns out that there have been quite a few research studies in which young children are asked in various ways to distinguish between play and not play. In a review of 12 such studies, Natasha Goodhall and Cathy Atkinson (2019) concluded that even very young children have a rather clear idea of the difference between play and non-play. Most important for the present discussion, a key characteristic of play for children is that it is chosen and directed by the children themselves.
As one example of such a study, Justine Howard and her colleagues (2006) showed children pictures of other kids involved in various activities and asked them to judge each as “play” or “not play.” It turned out that the most reliable indicator for the children was the presence or absence of an adult. If an adult (generally seen to be a teacher) was present, the activity was most often judged as “not play,” even if the children looked happy and involved. Children were also more likely to judge an activity as play if there was more than one child involved than if a single child was doing something alone.
Howard and her colleagues (2006) also reviewed previous research on children’s understanding of play and concluded that, all in all, children consider an activity to be play if it (a) is controlled by the children, (b) is enjoyable, (c) has no preset goal, and (d) involves pretense. Yay! This list matches reasonably well with the list I generated based on the work of other play researchers and my own observations. I’m apparently not too far off the mark.
Unfortunately, many education specialists who have heard that play is good for children’s learning don’t understand what play is. They develop “play-based learning” programs that go against the first characteristic of play because they are chosen and set up by the teacher and are more-or-less forced upon the children rather than freely chosen by them. Once the first characteristic is destroyed, the others are also generally destroyed.
I think it is hard for teachers to provide much real play for children, because that means giving up control. Moreover, stepping back and letting the children do their own thing may look like laziness or negligence(疏忽) to adult observers.
【1】Which of the following is more likely to be regarded as play by children?
A.Activities filled with joys and sorrows.
B.Activities directed by children themselves.
C.Activities with the company of their parents.
D.Activities set up and monitored by a teacher.
【2】What does the underlined sentence “I’m apparently not too far off the mark” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.I am opposed to the mark.
B.I am in the wrong direction.
C.My finding is close to the truth.
D.My mark is beyond imagination.
【3】What is the problem with “play-based learning” programs?
A.Children can not choose them freely.
B.The benefits of the programs are ignored.
C.Not all the children are involved in the activities.
D.What children do goes against the rules of the games.
【4】What does the text mainly talk about?
A.How children define play.
B.Why play matters for children.
C.How specialists design play-based learning.
D.Why play-based learning is important to children.
