21、“Cook for yourself like you would for a guest.” This advice comes from Claire Lower in an article for Lifehacker. It seems to be good advice for people who live alone and can’t be bothered to cook delicious food when there’s no one else to enjoy it. Yes, they can gorge themselves on popcorn and call it a night without fear of judgment, but Lower argues that this “wears on the soul” over time.
Every meal is a chance to work on good table manners, including the art of dinner conversation, eating tidily, and using cutlery properly. You can try to use nice dishes and real glasses in order to create an appealing atmosphere that encourages everyone to take the meal more seriously.
At the same time, it is a parental duty to cook a range of interesting and delicious meals to help train children for the unavoidable day when they actually are at a fancy restaurant or a friend’s house and faced with a strange soup, an unusual salad, or an unrecognizable main course. That way, they’ll know what to do and how to do it politely.
Eating gives shape and meaning to our days, not to mention flavour, nutrition and energy. Just as boring, repetitive meals wear on the soul, delicious ones can bring happiness, hopefulness, and peace. So, don’t give up on cooking well, whether it’s just for you or for a group of children, even if it’s just a few times a week and the dishes are simple. It does get easier and better, and you’ll learn to look forward to it.

22、Engineers and scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas get clean drinking water.
They developed a low-cost gel film (凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate (气候). Just one kilogram of gel can collect up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity (潮湿), one kilogram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.
Researchers have harvested fresh water from fog and dew before, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air require lots of energy and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a big improvement from earlier water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate.
“This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said GuihuaYu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people without access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices (取水装置) at home that they can easily operate.”
“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” the paper’s lead author, Youhong “Nancy” Guo said. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the production, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.
【1】What do we know about the gel film from paragraph 2?
A.It can increase the humidity of the air.
B.It can harvest drinking water from the air.
C.It has been widely applied in desert areas.
D.It costs lots of money and energy to produce.
【2】What is Guihua Yu’s attitude towards the new water-harvesting method?
A.Unconcerned.
B.Doubtful.
C.Objective.
D.Hopeful.
【3】What does the underlined word “straightforward” in last paragraph mean?
A.easy.
B.funny.
C.good.
D.cheap
【4】What will scientists plan to do next?
A.Develop a thicker gel.
B.Produce the gel on a large scale (规模).
C.Raise money for further research.
D.Teach people to make the gel at home.
23、Tips on Presentation Skills
Even with a snappy (漂亮的)opening, after 10 minutes, most audiences will lose 75 percent of their listening capacity. 【1】Effective speakers use a variety of presentation skills to deliver a message attractively all the time.
Effective speakers understand that wandering presentations are impossible to understand and are guaranteed to lose an audience. Behind every powerful speech is a solid outline matching with the goal of the presentation. One basic structure is an “open, body and close” approach. 【2】 If the goal is persuasion,Motivated Sequence (激励序列)is a technique of presenting information that involves an audience in both a problem and a solution.
【3】Practice and relaxation are the best ways to improve voice tone and pace. Being well prepared and relaxed can help a speaker deliver speech confidently. Not everyone is born a good presenter. Skills and techniques can be obtained by practice including an appealing voice tone at a proper speed when presenting.
Nonverbal communication, such as dress and gestures, can dramatically influence the acceptance of a presentation. A speaker's dress should match his audience and the significance of the event. For example, a speaker presenting to a corporate audience should wear a suit. Dress specifics will vary from speaker to speaker, but the key is choosing clothes that enhance(增加),not distract, from the message. 【4】
【5】 PowerPoint is a popular, but often misused, presentation technology. Like nonverbal communication, the key to PowerPoint success is designing slides to enhance, not take over, the presentation.
A.If used correctly, technology can help keep audience's interest.
B.This can't happen if a speaker is too worried about his/her own reaction.
C.If the goal is to inform, information may be structured by cause and effect
D.Voice tone and speed are well-known topics when it comes to presentation skills.
E.It means a speaker must work throughout the speech to draw listeners into the presentation.
F.Message acceptance is a two-way communication process and requires audience agreement.
G.And keep movement close to the body to ensure gestures are emphasizing key points but not distracting from the message.
