21、Jerry was the kind of guy who was always in a good mood and always said something positive. One day I asked him,“I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?” Jerry replied,“Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices. To be in a good mood or bad mood.’ I choose the former.”
“Yeah, right, it’s not that easy” I protested.
“Yes it is.” Jerry said. “Life is all about choices. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. It’s your choice how you live life.”
Soon thereafter, I changed my job. We lost touch. Several years later, I heard that Jerry was robbed and was shot. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied,“Really good.” I asked him what had gone through his mind when he was taken to the hospital. Jerry replied,“I remembered I had two choices: I could choose to live, or die. I chose to live. The nurses kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses scared me. In their eyes, I read, ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.”
“What did you do?” I asked.
“Well, a nurse asked if I was allergic to anything,”said Jerry.
“Yes” I replied.
“The doctors and nurses were waiting for my reply…I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Bullets!’ Over their laughter, I told them, ‘Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’” Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live positively.

22、Interactive software that “reads” and analyses footprints left by black rhinos (犀牛)can be used to monitor the movements of the animals in the wild, giving conservationists a new way to keep watch on the endangered species and help keep it safe from poachers (偷猎者), according to a Duke University-led study.
The software, called the Footprint Identification Technique (FIT), uses advanced technology to analyze more than 100 measurements of a rhino's footprint. Because each rhino's footprint is as special as a human fingerprint, the analyzed images can be collected electronically in a global database of previously collected footprint images for matching.
“If you find a match, you can identify the individual animal who left the mark and, by plotting the locations of all the other places where marks have been seen, track its movements without disturbing it or coming into close enough contact with it,” said Zoe Jewell, a professor at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, who co-led the study and is co-creator of FIT.
“It's a cost-effective approach that not only protects the health of the rhino and the human, but also brings a centuries-old tracking skill into the 21st Century,” she said. Jewell and her colleagues are now working with Namibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism to train wildlife conservationists, land managers and local guides how to use FIT.
Namibia is home to an estimated 2,000 black rhinos, or about 90% of the species' total population worldwide. Though legally owned by the government, the animals are distributed geographically on private lands across the country.
The FIT software can also do a survey of footprints throughout the protected area and take measurements from each footprint to estimate the number of rhinos in that area. This can be useful information for calculation resource needs to monitor the animals effectively. This creates an interactive library that anti-poaching patrols(反偷猎巡逻)can use to search for animals at the highest risk, including those whose footprints haven’t been showing up in recent years.
【1】What is the purpose of the software?
A.To promote the development of technology.
B.To protect black rhinos from being hunted.
C.To analyze the footprints of illegal poachers.
D.To save endangered species across the world.
【2】What’s the advantage of the software?
A.It owns various functions.
B.It goes to the market.
C.It is perfectly practical.
D.It is more than popular.
【3】What does Zoe Jewell say about the approach?
A.It brings the best advantage for the lowest cost.
B.It helps increase the population of black rhinos.
C.It raises people's awareness of the environment.
D.It strengthens the tie between humans and nature.
【4】Which of the following best describes the future of rhinos?
A.Optimistic.
B.Hopeless.
C.Worrying.
D.Uncertain.
23、Sweet peas, cucumbers, grapes ---- what do you think they have in common?
None of these vegetables grow on trees. They all don’t have strong roots, big trunks or long branches, which makes it harder for them to get sunlight. But don’t worry. They have developed their own unique way of growing taller climbing!
Take sweet peas as an example. The plant grows as a straight stem until it finds something to hold onto, either a nearby tree or a stick. That is when the stem makes small coil(卷曲) that helps the plant hold the stick tightly.
How these plants are able to do this has been a mystery to scientists for years. Even Charles Darwin was interested in this question. But it is not until now that a Harvard research team has finally found the answer. The study was published in the Journal Science earlier this month.
The key, as it turns out, is inside a kind of thread-like cell called “g-fiber cell”, which has the ability to shrink or stretch. Each stem of the pea plant is made of several layers of g-fibers. Once the plant finds something to hold onto, cells on side of the stem start to shrink, forcing the whole thing to bend and coil, which is a bit like how our muscles get our bodies to move.
What’s more, a pea’s coil is not exactly like that of a spring. If you look closely, you may find that a spring coils all in the same direction, but a plant’s coil is in two opposite directions, like a telephone line. This means that the stem can stay soft when pulled gently but become strong enough when pulled harder.
“You want the plant to have a little bit of flexibility(柔韧性) so that if the wind blows or an animal disturb it, it doesn’t break,” explained Sharon Gerbode, author of the study. “This structure allows the plant to easily accommodate small movement, but then if something really serious happens it can become strong and protect itself.”
【1】 According to the article, coiling happens in sweet peas plant to allow the plant to .
A. form a straight stem
B. grow strong roots
C. develop g-fiber cells on the stems
D. climb itself up toward the sunlight
【2】According to the article, which one is true about “a sweet pea’s coil”?
A. to be like that of a spring
B. to bend all in the same direction
C. to make the stem hard break
D. to make the stem get soft when pulled hard
【3】When the sweet pea plant finds something to hold onto, .
A. g-fiber cells on both sides of stem, forcing the stem to bend and coil
B. g-fiber cells on side of stem shrink, forcing the stem to bend and coil
C. g-fiber cells on the stem start to stretch, forcing the stem to bend and coil
D. there are more g-fiber cells on the stems
【4】What’s the purpose of the writer in the passage?
A. To tell us why the sweet peas can climb the tree or stick.
B. To display new research allows scientists to understand more about climbing plants.
C. To show us new scientific research about the role of “g-fiber cell”.
D. To tell us the mysterious natural phenomena of some plants.
24、 The genetics of human eye color is much more complex than previously thought. according to a new study published recently.
An international team of researchers led by King’s College London and Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam have identified 50 new genes for eye color in the largest genetic study of its kind to date. The study, published in Science Advances, involved the genetic analysis of almost 195,000 people across Europe and Asia.
These findings will help to improve the understanding of eye diseases such as pigmentary glaucoma and ocular albinism, where eye pigment (色素) levels play a role. In addition, the team found that eye color in Asians with different shades of brown is genetically similar to eye color in Europeans ranging from dark brown to light blue.
This study builds on previous research in which scientists had identified a dozen genes linked to eye color, believing there to be many more. Previously, scientists thought that variation in eye color was controlled by one or two genes only, with brown eyes dominant (显性的) over blue eyes.
Co-senior author Dr Pirro Hysi, King’s College London, said: “The findings are exciting because they bring us to a step closer to understanding the genes that cause one of the most striking features of the human faces, which has mystified (使困感) generations throughout our history. This will improve our understanding of many diseases that we know are associated with specific pigmentation levels.”
Co-senior author Dr Manfred Kayser, Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, said: “This study delivers the genetic knowledge needed to improve eye colour prediction from DNA as already applied in anthropological (人类学的) and forensic (法医的) studies, but with limited accuracy for the non-brown and non-blue eye colours.”
【1】What does Paragraph 3 talk about?
A.The result and significance of the new study.
B.The key role eye pigment plays in eye discases.
C.The detailed progress of the newly-published study.
D.The difference in eye colors of Asians and Europeans.
【2】What’s Dr. Pirro Hysi’s attitude towards the new findings?
A.Critical.
B.Disappointed.
C.Skeptical.

B.Dr. Manfred Kayser identifies that the study can be applied to all eye colors.
C.Published in Science Advances, the study analyzed about 195,000 people globally.
D.The research which identified 50 new genes for eye color is the biggest of its kind so far.
【4】What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Eye pigment levels are inked most eye diseases.
B.A new study found eye colors may be inked with many genes.

26、Culture in general is concerned with beliefs and values on the basis of which people explain experiences and behaviors, individually or in groups. Generally speaking, culture refers to a group or community with which you share common experiences that shape the way you understand the world.
The same person, thus, can belong to several different cultures depending on his or her birthplace, nationality, ethnicity, family status, gender, age, language, education, physical condition, religion, profession, place of work and so on.
Culture is often at the root of communication challenges. Exploring historical experiences and the ways in which various cultural groups have related to each other is important in opening channels for cross-cultural communication. Becoming more aware of cultural differences, as well as exploring cultural similarities, can help you communicate with others more effectively. Next time you find yourself in a confusing situation, ask yourself how culture may be shaping your own reactions, and try to see the world from the others’ point of view.
