二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Space is becoming more crowded. Quite a few low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites have been launched into the sky, which are designed to move around the Earth only a few hundred kilometres above its surface. SpaceX and OneWeb plan to launch LEO satellites in their thousands, not hundreds, to double the total number of satellites in orbit by 2027.

That promises to change things on Earth. LEO satellites can bring Internet connectivity to places where it is still unavailable. This will also be a source of new demand for the space economy. Morgan Stanley, a bank, projects that the space industry will grow from $350 billion in 2016 to more than $1.1 trillion by 2040. New Internet satellites will account for half this increase.

For that to happen, however, three worries must be overcome. Debris (碎片) is the most familiar concern. As long ago as 1978, Donald Kessler, a scientist at NASA, proposed a scenario (设想) in which, when enough satellites were packed into low-Earth orbits, any collision could cause a chain reaction which would eventually destroy all spacecraft in its orbital plane. Solutions exist. One solution is to grab the satellites with problems and pull them down into the Earth’s atmosphere. Another is to monitor space more closely for debris. But technology is only part of the answer. Rules are needed to deal with old satellites safely from low-Earth orbits.

Cyber-security is a second, long-standing worry. Hackers could take control of a satellite and steal intellectual property, redirect data flows or cause a collision. The satellite industry has been slow to respond to such concerns. But as more of the world’s population comes to rely on space for access to the Internet, the need for action intensifies. Measures will surely be taken to protect network security.

The third issue follows from the first two. If a simple mistake or a cyber-attack can cause a chain reaction which wipes out hundreds of billions of dollars of investment, who is responsible for that? Now the plans of firms, wishing to operate large numbers of satellites are being studied. But there is a long way to go before the risks are well understood, let alone priced.

As space becomes more commercialized, mind-bending prospects open up: packages moved across the planet in minutes by rocket rather than by plane, equipment sent to other small planets, passengers launched into orbit and beyond. All that and more may come one day. But such activities would raise the same questions as LEO satellites do. They must be answered before the space economy can truly develop.

【1】What can we learn about LEO satellites from the passage?

A.They will limit the space economy

B.They will increase in large numbers.

C.They will move beyond the Earth as far as possible.

D.They will monitor old satellites.

【2】What might be one of the purposes of launching LEO satellites?

A.To avoid network attack.

B.To make the Internet accessible to backward areas.

C.To lighten the financial burden of space firms.

D.To accelerate the development of bank industry.

【3】According to Kessler, an accidental collision could ________.

A.block low-Earth orbits with packed satellites

B.pull down satellites into Earth’s atmosphere

C.put the disposal of old satellites at high risks

D.bring destruction to spacecraft in the same orbit

【4】Which of the following statements might the author agree with?

A.It should be further confirmed for its ownership.

B.It should be continued because of its advantages.

C.It should be done carefully to avoid potential risks.

D.It should be stopped in the face of the space economy.

22、E

Speaking two languages can actually help offset(抵消) some effects of aging on the brain, a new study has found,

Researchers tested how long it took participants to switch from one cognitive(认知的) task to another, something that-s known to take longer for older adults, said lead researcher, Brian Gold, a neuroscientist at the University of Kentucky.

Gold’s team compared task-switching speeds for younger and older adults, knowing they would find slower speeds in the older population because of previous studies. However, they found that older adults who spoke two languages were able to switch mental activities faster than those didnt . The study only looked at life long bilinguals(会说两种语言的人) defined in study as people speaking a second language daily since they were at least 10 years old.

Gold and his team asked 30 people, either bilingual or monolingual(只僮一种语言 人) , to have a series of tests. They found that bilingual people were not only able to switch tasks faster they had different brain activity than their monolingual peers.

Kristina called bilingualism "a beautiful natural experiment”, because people grow up speaking two languages, and studies have shown that they get certain cognitive benefits from switching between languages and determining which to respond with based on what's going on around them.

Gold said he grew up in Montreal, where he spoke French at school and English at home, prompting relatives to question whether his French language immersion would somehow hinder his ability to learn English.

"Until very recently, learning a second language in childhood was thought of as dangerous," he said. "Actually, it's beneficial. "

1What-s the main idea of the passage?

A. Researchers found that speaking two languages is important.

B. Researchers found that bilingual people respond slowly.

C. Researchers found that bilingual people can slow down the speed or aging on the brain and respond fast.

D. Researchers found that bilingual people are great.

2Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Older bilinguals can-t respond faster in mind.

B. Older adults speaking a second language daily since they were at least 10 years old can respond faster than those who don't

C. Young bilinguals can respond faster in mind than those monolinguals.

D. Bilingual children respond slower in mind than those monolinguals.

3Kristina called bilingualism "a beautif'ul natural experiment" because

A. people grow up, benefiting from speaking two languages

B. people speaking two languages are natural

C. people speaking two languages are beautiful

D. people speaking two languages like the experiment

4We can learn from the last paragraph that learning a second language in childhood is________

A. dangerous to children

B. not beneficial to children

C.dangerous but beneficial to children

D. not dangerous but beneficial to children

23、Tipping, customers paying service workers, usually at restaurants, for services they receive, has been a regular part of American culture for well over a century, but the emergence of new technology and shifting expectations have shaken long-standing norms around the practice. That uncertainty, together with the pressure it can often create, has left some consumers feeling exhausted by the frequency with which they’re forced to decide which workers to tip and how much.

A big reason for the growth of what is being called “tip tiredness” is the increasing presence of digital payment systems, which have replaced traditional cash registers at most businesses. Suddenly, rather than being given the chance to drop a dollar in a tip jar, customers are confronted with a tablet. 【1】 They have to tip for services they’d never considered tipping for in the past.

Tipping also makes labor laws more complicated. In all but a handful of states, employers are allowed to pay tipped workers below minimum wage. In some cases, the standard is as low as $2.13 per hour, as long as workers make enough in tips to earn the equivalent of minimum wage. 【2】 Many people are debating over whether tipping system need a repair — or even should be cancelled altogether. They say tipping needs to be eliminated and replaced by a fair wage for all service workers. The tipping practice increases the possibility that employees can’t get what they deserve. 【3】 In many cases, customers’ tip amounts are largely guided by factors other than quality of the service they receive, which makes the situation even worse.

However, defenders of the current arrangement say it’s still the best option. 【4】 It provides a chance for workers to have more control over their financial welfare. If a restaurant is doing well because it’s safely operated, properly managed and delivers great food, customers will usually tip. And when that happens, everyone — from the wait staff to the dishwashers — can share in the business’s success.

A.The frustration about such shifting wage payment has added new wrinkles to the controversy.

B.The diversity of tipping channels somewhat eases the conflicts in deciding the amount of tips.

C.No workers should have their livelihood depend on their customers’ mercy.

D.The popularity of digital point-of-sale systems has also meant consumers are being asked to tip more frequently.

E.Tipping, against many people’s wills, establishes a new customer-server relationship.

F.It’s believed that tipping is the ultimate profit-sharing plan.

24、   So you think that by staying at home you are safe from all the terrible kinds of pollution present outdoors? Recent research done at the University of Texas has shown that staying indoors may actually be more harmful to one’s health than being outdoors in smoggy cities.

The research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effects. These chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in such seemingly harmless activities as cleaning one’s house. These additives are released from water by daily actions like water running out of taps, spraying from garden hoses, or splashing in dishwashers and washing machines. As the water is agitated (搅动), these chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health harmfully.

Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of candles and incense release a lot of things which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near high density traffic. New rugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that “new smell”, which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly-applied paint, newly-purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers and their peripheral (外部设备) release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (空气流通), these chemicals can build up to become health trouble. Their toxic effects are only now being slowly recognized.

These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly-purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise precaution. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather to allow a flushing of stale air. Even one’s car needs to be ventilated as well as the garage.

Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that “there is no place like home”.

1According to the text, why is the local water supply unsafe?

A.Because it contains harmful chemicals.

B.Because it contains poisonous bacteria.

C.Because the activities of using water are harmful.

D.Because washing dishes makes the water polluted.

2The underlined word “toxic” in Paragraph 3 is closest to “________” in meaning.

A.long-lasting B.poisonous

C.obvious D.immediate

3What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4?

A.Present more detailed information. B.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

C.Introduce a new topic for discussion. D.Give some advice about the problem.

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A.Enclosed environment may have potential health risks.

B.Staying indoors is actually less risky than going outside.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was spring-the sun was shining, the flowers were blooming, and the birds were singing their beautiful songs. In a nearby basketball stadium, a basketball championship was going on. Kerr, like his elder brother Timmy, was one of the best in the competition; he scored most of his team’s points, but his team did not like that, because Kerr never passed the ball. His coach always told him that it was a team game and not a one-man show. “Kerr, pass the ball more,” insisted Coach Tyler.

“Coach, I am good. I can win this whole tournament by myself if I want to,” responded Kerr.

“Kerr, you need to learn to respect the game!” said Coach Tyler.

“I don’t need to respect anything,” said Kerr.

“Okay then, I don’t need you in my team, Kerr. Get out of here!” said Coach Tyler.

“Fine!” replied Kerr angrily.

At school Kerr’s friends Zack, Christopher, and Aaron were trying to calm down Kerr, who was still angry about what had happened the previous day. Kerr was usually good in school, but after he was kicked out of the team, his attitude changed. He started doing poorly; he got in trouble and failed classes. Kerr tried to join other basketball teams, but he could not because their list was filled or he was too young or too old. Finally, Kerr was recommended a team by Zack.

Five months later...

Kerr started passing the ball more, and he still averaged 26.4 points per game. Kerr enjoyed how he played, but he did not like that he was coming off the bench(替补). Kerr proved that he was a star on the court, but still the coach said that he was better coming off the bench.“Coach, I think I have shown that I can start the next game,” said Kerr calmly. “No, Kerr, you are not good enough,” responded the coach. “But...”said Kerr before the coach interrupted him. “No, Kerr!” Kerr started getting mad. “Coach, you need to let me start. I’m the best in this team,” said Kerr proudly. “Kerr, how about you just leave?” shouted the coach.
