21、4 sustainability tips for Earth Day
On this Earth Day, sea turtles are thriving on Florida beaches and the air in Los Angeles is cleaner than ever before. But these events are the result of the coronavirus pandemic, when there are fewer cars on the road, planes in the sky, and factories at full production. With most people at home, nature is prospering. Few believe these improvements will continue when people are able to head to the office again. 【1】.
Help the environment while eating healthier. 【2】. Using ingredients that have a much smaller environmental impact compared to using animal products. While you're in the kitchen, instead of throwing away your bits of onion, celery, and garlic, scoop up the scraps and try re-growing them for your own garden.
Time for spring recycling. A lot of people are using their extra time at home to remove their clothes they'll never wear again and birthday cards from a decade ago. Instead of throwing it all away, there are several companies and nonprofits that will accept these items, turning them into new products or recyclable materials. The Crayon Initiative takes discarded crayons, melts them down, and remanufactures them, with the new crayons then sent to children's hospitals. 【3】.
【4】. Here's a smaller decision that can make a difference: When recycling a bottle, make sure you first take off the bottle cap and throw it in the trash. Also, when cafes are back open again, choose a reusable thermos or enjoy your drink in one of their mugs because paper to-go coffee cups are lined with a plastic film that can't be recycled.
Properly dispose of prescription drugs. In order to keep the no-longer- necessary prescription drugs away from kids or anyone else who shouldn't get into them, some people flush them down the toilet. 【5】. Most communities have a safe place to dispose of old and unused prescriptions, with pharmacies and hospitals often accepting the drugs.
A.Collect as more bottle caps as possible.
B.Throw away those bottle caps.
C.However, there are still a few things we can do for the planet.
D.It is a great way to deal with old and unused prescriptions.
E.This can change the water supply and affect water wildlife.
F.Lockdown is a good time to try more plant-based recipes.
G.Even old birthday, Christmas, and thank you cards can be made new again, thanks to St. Jude's Ranch for Children.
22、High school programs at the National Gallery of Art value depth over breadth, exploring original works of art through a single specific question or theme.
High School Studio Workshops
Single museum visit, 2.5 hours
These half-day art workshops include an in-depth examination and discussion of works of art in the galleries, followed by behind-the-scenes access to the Education Studio, where students create a related art project.
During the workshop, National Gallery of Art educators will encourage students to look carefully at works of art and then share their responses and develop theories based on their observations.
Students will have the opportunity to create a work of art in the studio inspired by what they have in the galleries.
Museum Marker: Exploring Art and Museums
The Museum Makers program explains how museums operate and what they have to offer. It gives upper-level high school students the tools to experience, understand and interpret art. Participants will gain an insider’s view of how and art museum works.
Students meet for seven Saturday sessions from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Completion of the program requires attendance of all seven sessions.
Creative Writing in the Galleries
Students will provide a voice for their personal responses to art through creative writing while looking at a selection of artworks in the galleries. Using close observation, group discussion, and personal reflection, they will be guided through exercises that use different writing forms, including free-form poetry.
A maximum of 30 students will be accommodated at each session.

23、 Disease-carrying mosquitoes can spread diseases without affecting themselves. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito-borne illness each year, which results in over one million deaths. Humans experience continuous pressures from disease-carrying mosquitoes in many parts of the world, so we have to find ways to fight against those insects because they keep getting scarier.
Even though DEET remains the most commonly used, and most powerful, mosquito repellent ever developed, scientists are actively pursuing effective products based entirely on plant oils. While DEET is an effective contact repellent, many people dislike the oily feel and smell on their skin, and sometimes some people are sensitive to it. Consumers are always interested in alternatives to DEET and other synthetic repellents, so there are numerous natural repellents on the market.
In his lab at Iowa State University, Dr. Joel Coats and his team have successfully tested these repellents against three species of dangerous mosquitoes. The first group of the new repellents act through the air. These chemicals have a vapor action that provides protection, and they are called “spatial” repellents, since they act through space. These are potentially most useful in backyards, parks, and houses. The other group are the classic ones that stop insects from standing on a treated surface, such as human skin, clothing or tents; collaborators at the USDA-ARS and BioGents have conducted testing with humans to confirm the effectiveness and identify the very best ones.
The new repellents were designed and made from the natural materials in plant essential oils. They maintain many of the advantages of the natural repellents: They are fully biodegradable, with no ecological concerns or environmental wastes, and generally considered safe like the thousands of types of plant essential oils used in the flavor and perfume industries. However, thorough testing will be conducted to determine if they are truly non-poisonous because there is still no enough evidence.

A.It won’t be effective for long.
B.It can’t be applied universally.
C.It causes discomfort to the users.

【3】What can we learn about the second group of the new repellents?
A.They can kill mosquitoes indirectly.
B.They are mainly used in the open air.
C.They are more effective on human skin.
D.They can prevent mosquitoes from contacting users.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude to the new repellents?
A.Subjective.
B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.
D.Disapproving.
24、You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100years?
Jane Addams (1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. Rachel Carson (1907-1964)

Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law company because she was a woman. Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
On December 1,1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott.
