21、A treasure trove hidden for centuries has been discovered in the underground vaults(墓穴)of a temple in southern India. The treasures include gold, diamonds and precious stones. The estimated value of the hoard is reportedly 22 billion US dollars.

Hundreds of armed police have been deployed around the temple. Meanwhile, a debate about how to use the money has also broken out across the country. After discovering the treasure trove in Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the southern Indian state of Kerala, the local government has assured  security of the temple.

Elaborating on the security arrangements, Venugopalan Nair, Additional Director General of the Kerala Police, says the latest security devices are being used to guard the temple.

Venugopalan Nair, Additional Dir. Gen. of Kerala Police, said, "We are trying to bring in the latest technology with regards to surveillance(监视) cameras, with regards to, you know digitalizing the various things which are available inside. We are keeping a constant sort of surveillance for every movement, which happens in the whole area surrounding the temple."

According to temple authorities, the crowd at the temple has increased steeply after news of the discovery of the treasure trove. And the Administrative Officer of the Temple says the government has initiated appropriate steps to control the curious crowds visiting the temple.

Over the last week, a seven-member team of investigators broke into five secret subterranean vaults, and discovered jewels that have been lying untouched for hundreds of years.

23、In early August, Hilary Krieger, now 44, was sitting in her parents’ Boston home when her friend accidentally squirted (喷射) himself with an orange slice. She said, “Oh, the orange just orbisculated.” And he said, “It did what?” The two made a five-dollar bet, and Hilary gladly grabbed the family dictionary but found the word “orbisculate” was not in it! Hilary burst into her dad’s study and told him the shocking news. Looking awkward, her father admitted that he had made up the word “orbisculate” as the action that happens “when you dig your spoon into a grapefruit and it squirts juice directly into your eye”.

At first, Hilary was mad. But she quickly came to see her dad’s made-up word as a gift. It speaks to his creativity and the idea that, even when something is painful and annoying, like getting grapefruit juice in your eye, you can laugh and have fun with it.

Hilary’s father Neil Krieger died in April 2020, at age 78. Since the Kriegers couldn’t have a proper funeral, Hilary who now lives in New York, spent a lot of time on the phone talking with friends and family, and the “orbisculate” story kept coming up.

“I began to think ‘orbisculate’ is such a great word; it should be in the dictionary!” says Hilary. She called her younger brother Jonathan, who lives in Boston and runs an online company. Their goal is to put the word to use publicly enough that it has a chance of becoming acceptable. Encouraging people to use “orbisculate” in a wide variety of contexts will leave a compelling (令人信服的) trail of evidence for lexicographers (词典编纂者) to follow.

It has been more than two years since Neil’s death and his children are still struggling from the loss. But their campaign to get their father’s word into the dictionary has helped them win back a little of the joy that has been missing from their lives. “I could picture him being really excited,” Jonathan says. “And not until that day did I know my father had created many ‘words’ that we wouldn’t see in the dictionary.”

【1】What made Hilary find “orbisculate” doesn’t exist?

A.A piece of shocking news.

B.The latest dictionary.

C.Her father’s strange reaction.

D.An accident between her friend and her.

【2】Which of the following can best describe Hilary’s father?

A.Strict and stubborn.

B.Optimistic and creative.

C.Flexible and reliable.

D.Determined and hardworking.

【3】When did Hilary decide to get the word “orbisculate” into the dictionary?

A.After her father’s death.

B.When her father told her the truth.

C.After her brother’s request.

D.After she put the word to use publicly.

【4】What will probably be talked about in the following part?

24、   Scientists Diego Kersting and Cristina Linares have found that some coral species are able to recover from harmful warming events through a unique survival strategy (策略)—known as “rejuvenescence” (新生)—among corals in the Mediterranean Sea. The findings represent some rare good news for corals around the world, which are facing numerous severe threats—most notably, climate change.

“The main threats are climate change, overfishing, pollution and coastal urbanization,” Kersting said. “But currently, climate change is probably the one causing the most coral cover declines. Warming stresses corals up to a point that may cause death. Some corals bleach (白化) before dying. Other corals do not bleach but die directly.” He went on, “Our findings are significant because this survival strategy was only known from fossil corals that existed hundreds of millions of years ago. It is the first time that it has been found in a living coral. Thanks to our findings, we know now that some corals are able to recover, but unfortunately this is not enough in the current climate change context.”

For their research, Kersting and Linares monitored 243 colonies of the endangered reef-building coral Cladocoracaespitosa in Spain’s Columbretes Islands Marine Reserve over 16 years, starting in 2002. The monitoring revealed that Cladocoracaespitosa in the Mediterranean uses rejuvenescence to cope with warming events. This process involves the polyps — or the individual coral animals in a colony—shrinking inward and abandoning their skeletons (骨骼) during warm periods, before rejuvenating at a later point. “What happens is that some polyps in a coral colony—sometimes just one— reduces completely its dimensions and partially retreats from its skeleton,” Kersting said. “Once the stressful event is over, the shrunken or rejuvenated polyp recovers its size and builds up a new skeleton. Eventually, it begins to reproduce itself through budding and begins to cover the dead colony surfaces.”

He continued, “The results were very surprising because I started to observe colonies that were dead years ago, that were showing living parts many years after their death.”

C.City growth. D.Climate change.

2What can we learn about the survival strategy?
