Dear Colleague
Re: __60___
I am writing to make you ware of some forthcoming changes to the payment dates for your salary. During the past few weeks, we have been discussing with your trade union representatives our intention to change the frequency of the payment of your salary from monthly to every four weeks. The reason for this change is to enable us to improve the efficiency of the payroll system and to make it easier for you to understand what you have been paid.
On Thursday 30 August, you will be paid your monthly basic pay up to and including 31 August. The last Thursday in the month is the normal monthly pay day. On 13 September, you will be paid basic pay up to and including 14 September. You will then be paid again 4 weeks later on 11 October, for time up to 12 October. The timetable of 4-weekly payments for the remainder of the financial year is listed
below: |
| |
8 | November | 31 January |
6 | December | 28 February |
3 | January 2021 | 28 March |
I understand that the transfer to a four-weekly pay cycle may cause some of you disruption to your monthly pay routines, for example mortgage(按揭)or rent repayments. In recognition of this initial disturbance and to assist you through this time, we are offering a-loan facility for a maximum of three weeks' wages (net pay), for those who may find it difficult to budget for this change. I have enclosed a form detailing this loan. Please ensure you complete and return the form by 30 June if you wish to take advantage of this offer. If you choose to use the loan facility, this will be paid on 13 September.
Of course, should you wish to discuss the contents of this letter, your line manager will have further information. If you still have any concerns or you have a personal query you wish to discuss, then from 13 June until 1 July you can call the following number: 01204 249259.
I hope that this letter clarifies the changes for you and would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your co-operation. Further information to explain how your new payslip will look will be available over the coming months.
Yours sincerely
Tina Grey
Group General Manager, Personnel Services

22、Some films to watch in 2022
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse pioneered its own pop-art visual style, and introduced the film world to the concept of different Spider-Men in different universes—a concept that has since been borrowed by Marvel’s live-action Spider-Mon: No Way Home. It is the first one in a two-part story, which makes it rare in the world of cartoon films.
To be released(发行)internationally on 7 October.
Avatar 2
There are two things we know about James Cameron: he can’t be rushed, and he loves the ocean. Those qualities come together in Avatar 2, the first of a four planned sequels(续集)to his 2009 movie Avatar. The new film returns to the planet of Pandora, where Neytiri and her human husband Jake are now parents, and Earthlings still haven’t solved the climate crisis. Most of the action takes place underwater and was shot in a 900000-gallon tank.
To be released internationally on 16 December.
Top Gun: Maverick
This Top Gun sequel was on our list of films to watch in 2022, and before that it was scheduled to come out in 2020, but we’re still optimistic that lovers of supersonic acrobatics(特技飞行)will finally get what they’ve been waiting for this year. It was back in 1986 that Cruise last played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a trainee fighter pilot in the US Navy.
To be released internationally on 27 May.
Elvis
It’s been almost a decade since the release of Baz Luthrmann’s The Great Gatsby, but the Australian writer-director is back at last. Never one to shy away from a big, risky project. Luhrmann has made an Elvis Presley biographic film about the life of The King of Rock and Roll.
To be released internationally on 24 June.

23、 The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. Let’s meet some of the great women who have left their mark on the country’s highest court.
Margaret Brent
In the early years of our nation, women were generally prevented from practicing law. However, there were some exceptions. One such exception was Margaret Brent, who settled in Maryland with her sisters in 1638 and became a wealthy landowner. Brent appeared before courts several times to file lawsuits( 诉 讼 ) against people who owed her money.
Lucy Terry Prince
Lucy was well -known for her skills as a public speaker, and in 1796 she became the first black woman in America to argue before a Supreme Court justice. The case arose from a land dispute, and Lucy argued against two leading lawyers. Chief Justice Samuel Chase , who oversaw the case, said that Prince “made a better argument than he had ever heard from a lawyer in Vermont.”
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, Ginsburg attended Cornell University and Columbia Law School. Between 1972 and 1978, she argued six cases before the Supreme Court concerning laws that kept women out of certain occupations. She won five of them. In the spring of 1993, Justice Byron White retired from the Supreme Court. President Bill Clinton then picked Ginsburg to be his replacement.
Myra Bradwell
In 1872, the Illinois Supreme Court denied Myra Bradwell’s admission to the Illinois Bar despite the fact that she had passed the state bar exam. Bradwell then asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn(撤销) the Illinois court’s decision. Unfortunately for Bradwell, the tables weren’t turned. 24、I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable (好客的) and friendly.
However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US , where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality first - hand on a crowded railway carriage travelling from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was scolded in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat - it had not been “spare” after all, I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too realized my genuine (真诚的) mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the rest of the journey. The other passengers smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome among them, I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.
Transport also showed the differences between English and American culture. I few to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to interrupt someone else's privacy. However, when I travelled across the
United States, whether by plane or. Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.
【1】What do we know about the passengers when the author was travelling in Italy?
A.They were all on the side of the gentleman.
B.They all laughed at the author for his mistake.
C.They would not bear a mistake like the author's in public.
D.They all showed their understanding of the author's mistake.
【2】What does the underlined word “scolded” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.shouted.
B.surprised.
C.praised.
D.blamed.
【3】Why did English passengers sit in near silence according to the last paragraph?
A.They were too tired to speak to anyone.
B.They were all strangers to each other.
C.Privacy was a valued tradition in England.
D.Everybody was deeply lost in thought.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Different Ways of Hospitality and Politeness.
B.My Unforgettable Travelling Experience Abroad.
C.Co - understanding Each Other.
D.The Importance of Privacy.

I’m not suggesting patients should be ______ from the reality of the risks they’re taking. But if the decision to have an operation can’t really be ______, what’s the purpose of stressing the ______? It’s just common sense to say, “Get well soon, and how can I help?”
