二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Children grow quickly, especially their feet. But many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites(寄生虫) from the soil.

Kenton Lee, an American man invented The Shoe That Grows. He explains, "It grows in three places: the front, on the side and on the back. It can last up to five years. The bottom is rubber(橡胶) like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather(皮革)."

Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. "I just remember a little girl who wore a pair of small shoes. The shoes were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet."

However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise.

A pair of shoes, he says, gives more than protection. It gives a child self-worth(自我价值) and more chances to succeed. "Because it's a small thing that really does make a big difference to keep them healthy and happy and having more chances to succeed."

23、   King's Point (Canada) (AFP) — At dusk, tourists arc amazed at the breakdown of an iceberg at the end of its long journey from Greenland to Canada's cast coast, which now has a front row scat to the melting (触化)of the Arctic’s ice.

While the rest of the world nervously eyes the effect of global warming, melting icebergs have breathed new life into the far coastal villages of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Once a center of cod (鳕鱼) fishing, the province now plays host to large groups of photographers and tourists hoping to sec the breathtaking ice melt. As winter ends, iceberg finding begins. The increase in tourism around here in the past 10 to 15 years has been unbelievable. Last year, a total of 500,000 tourists visited Newfoundland and Labrador, a number almost as large as the province's total population. Those visitors spent nearly $433 million, government numbers show. The tourism boom has helped solve the decrease in the regions traditional fishing industry, which is in crisis (危机) because of overfishing at the end of the last century.

But under the shiny surface of economic success is the dark truth that the area is in part profiting from global warming. The Arctic is warming three limes faster than the rest of the world. In mid-July, record temperatures were recorded near the North Pole. In recent years, the icebergs have traveled further and further south. For now, tourists arc enjoying the view and the experience while they can.

Laurent Lucazcau, a 34-year-old French tourist, said seeing an iceberg was upsetting. “It is a picture of global warming to see icebergs making it to these places where the water is warm,” he told AFP. “There’s something mysterious and impressive about it, but knowing too that they arc not supposed to be here makes you wonder, and it’s a little scary.”

1What can we learn about the tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador?

A.It benefits local economy. B.It bothers local people.

C.It prevents global warming. D.It hurts the fishing industry.

2Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The total number of tourists is the same as the province's total population.

B.The shiny economic success is more important than global warming.

C.All of the tourists arc enjoying the view along Canada's cast coast.

D.In mid-July, the Arctic is much warmer than ever before.

3What can be inferred from Laurent Lucazcau's words?

A.Summer is coming to an end in King's Point.

B.New icebergs will form along the Canadian coast.

C.Visitors don't know why icebergs come down south.

D.The view is a sign of serious environmental problems.

24、The traditional British pub is part of the scenery of British life. At a recent count, there are around 50000 of them in the UK, some of which date back to as far as the 5th and 6th centuries. The oldest---Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St. Albans---was established in 795.

Because of their abundance, the names pubs take were designed to be memorable---but more than that, they were designed to be visual. Outside any traditional pub worthy of its title, you’ll find a hanging signboard with a unique illustration(插图)that represents the name of the business. The practice is so well established that even new pubs copy it. But why do they exist at all?

The first British pub signs were created in the 12th century and were simple representations of beer containers and other brewing-related equipment used to inform passersby that establishments sold beer. This was Britain in the dark ages, when education was in short supply. Since most of the population were unable to read, pub signs were used to inform would-be customers that they could find a drink inside.

The earliest uses of pub names would reference the sign directly. People would arrange to meet “at the sign of the Eagle and Child” rather than “at the Eagle and Child.”

Today the tradition remains unchanged largely out of respect for the past, but many pub signs do have some functionality. Remote country pubs often use signboards to point the way to their doors from more trafficked(可贩卖的)paths. It’s a part of British culture that’s rapidly disappearing---more than 20,000 pubs have closed since 1980—but for now there are still more than enough around that you can take a moment to appreciate the history and symbolism behind a pub’s sign the next time you see one.

1What is special about British pub signs?

C. They have unique pictures   D. They include the history of the pub

2The first British pub signs were mainly used to ____.

A. inspire passersby   B. inform passersby

3Modern British pub signs are different from the earliest ones in ___________.

C. material   D. purpose

4What is the text mainly about?

B. The importance of British pub signs
