二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、If you look up in the sky, you probably see, at some point, an aircraft. And behind that aircraft are white, fluffy streaks (条纹). And that's what we call a contrail. Contrails are made up of ice crystals that form when aircraft engines emit exhaust (废气) that hits the cold air.

The ice crystals reflect incoming light from the sun back into space, which has a cooling effect on the atmosphere. But the contrails also stop heat coming up from the ground from escaping into space. It is reflected back down toward the ground. And so that's a warming effect. Stettler, an engineer from Imperial College London, says, on balance, contrails warm the atmosphere more than they cool it. And that's mainly because the cooling effect due to reflecting of sunlight can only happen during the day, when the sun's shining, whereas the warming effect due to trapping of outgoing heat happens all of the time.

How long do contrails last? This depends on the atmospheric conditions at the altitude where a plane is flying. Some contrails can form clouds that last for up to 18 hours. During that time, they spread out, trapping even more heat. This process allows contrails to warm the planet about as much as the carbon dioxide emissions from aircraft.

But when Stettler and his team analyzed flight data they obtained of Japan airspace, they found that most contrail warming was caused by just 2 percent of flights. And most of those flights originated in the late afternoon because as the sun goes down, cooling can no longer offset (抵消) the warming. And the warming effect continues to exist throughout the evening into the night. But what if the contrails that contribute the most to warming could be got rid of?

【1】What does "it" in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.A cooling effect.

B.Heat from the ground.

C.Light from the sun.

D.Exhaust hitting the cold air.

【2】What can be learned about contrails?

A.They can easily disappear in the air.

B.They actually contribute to global warming.

C.Their cooling effect happens all of the time.

D.Their warming effect is usually overlooked.

【3】What is most likely to be talked about next?

A.A future plan for Japan airspace.

B.The negative influence of contrails.

C.Other potential causes of contrails.

D.A possible way to remove contrails.

22、The shadow play is a typical traditional entertainment that has survived and thrived over the centuries. It is taken as an earliest ancestor of modern cinema.

Legend has it that more than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very depressed about the death of his favorite concubine. To help him get over his sadness, a minister made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the concubine and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see. The show brought the emperor some comfort. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover's spirit. This is thought to be the beginning of the shadow play.

One mouth tells stories of thousands of years; a pair of hands operate millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works. Nicknamed “the business of the five”, a shadow play group is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a suona and a yueqin, one plays the banhu, one is in charge of percussion instruments, and one sings.

During performances, “actors” are held close to a white curtain with their colored shadows cast on it by a strong light from behind. The operator plays five puppets at the same time, each of which has three threads. Ten fingers handle fifteen threads. Moved by guiding sticks, the puppets play roles with musical accompaniment, The popularity of the shadow play in some way lies in the equipment being light and easy to carry, the small number of people needed for a performance, and the flexible requirements for performance places. The plays can be quite dramatic and, when it comes to myths or kung fu stories, the “actors” may be made to ride on clouds or perform unusual feats, to the great enjoyment of the audience, especially children. The audience can tell a figure's character by seeing his mask. Like the masks in Beijing opera, a red mask represents loyalty and bravery.

Nowadays, the shadow play has been industrialized and developed a series of tourist products for the promotion of Chinese culture and tourism.

【1】What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.A love story of Emperor Wu of Han.

B.The origin of the shadow play.

C.How to please an emperor.

D.How to make a cotton puppet.

【2】According to the author, the audience may take great pleasure________.

A.when roles are played without music

B.because the equipment is light to carry

C.because the number of the operators is small

D.when the puppets give lively performances

【3】What is the author's attitude towards the future of the shadow play?

A.Positive.

B.Friendly.

C.Doubtful.

D.Negative.

【4】What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?

A.To promote the shadow play.

B.To explain the art of shadow play.

C.To teach people to operate the shadow puppetry.

D.To enjoy the traditional characters and masks in Beijing Opera.

23、A new study finds that our brains are wired to make music-color connections depending on how the music makes us feel. Mozart’s “Flute Concerto No.1 in G Major” is most often associated with bright yellow and orange, whereas his “Requiem in D Minor” is linked to bluish gray, the findings revealed.

US researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, enlisted nearly 100 subjects for a study on music and color. With 37 colors, the UC Berkeley study found that people tend to pair faster-paced music in a major key with lighter, more vivid, yellow colors, whereas slower-paced music in a minor key is more likely to be teamed up with darker, grayer, bluer colors.

“Surprisingly, we can predict with 95 percent accuracy how happy or sad the colors people pick will be based on how happy or sad the music is that they are listening to,” said lead author and UC Berkeley vision scientist Stephen Palmer.

In three experiments, the subjects listened to 18 classical music pieces that varied in pace (slow, medium, fast) and in major VS minor keys. In the first experiment, participants were asked to pick five of the 37 colors that best matched the music to which they were listening. Separately, they rated each piece of music on a scale of happy to sad, strong to weak, lively to dull, and calm to angry.

Next, the research team plans to study particiapants in Turkey where traditional music employs a wider range of scales than just major and minor. “We know that in Mexico and the US the responses are very similar,” Palmer said. “But we don’t yet know about China or Turkey.”

1What can we know about Mozart’s “Flute Concerto No. 1 G Major”?

A. It is fast in pace.

B. It is slow in pace.

C. It makes us feel upset.

D. It makes us feel optimistic.

2What did the US researchers find from the result of the new study?

A. There are colors that do not match any music.

B. People tend to connect happy colors to slow-paced music

C. There is a one-to-one connection between music and color.

D. People nearly do the same in picking colors for different music.

3How did the researchers do the research?

A. By making predictions.   B. By researching journals.

C. By conducting experiments.   D. By studying famous musicians.

4According to the text, the research mainly deals with __________

A. how colors or music influence our emotions

B. how emotions affect music-color connections

C. why we have different feelings towards music

D. why we have different feelings towards colors

24、My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago. We have a yard a “rock garden”. There the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish. Very often when we have more flowers, Denise or I would plant them between the rocks, just to bring some color to the area.

Last summer I found, in the rock garden, a tiny little plant that I could not immediately recognize. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could find out what it was.

Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. It looked thin and tall with only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed (除草) around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

If a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for growth.

We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what we are, then other things will begin to support us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks” in order to realize our goals.

【1】The family planted flowers in the yard ________.

A.to attract visitors

B.to remove the rocks

C.to please their neighbors

D.to make the area colorful

【3】The author think the sunflower was unusual because ________.

A.it was very thin and tall

B.it had only one head on it

C.it grew on top of a big rock

D.it began to grow under a rock
