二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、With golden sunshine and a gentle breeze (微风), autumn is the most beautiful seasons in the year. This is a great time to go outside and have fun. Go to a valley to see red maple trees , go and pick fruit in an orchard or find an open field to fly your kite in.

However, for many high school students, these great activities may be just a dream. With plenty of work to do, they spend all their hours indoors, struggling for a high mark in their exams. Of course, study is one of the most important things for teenagers. But life is definitely much more than that.

Sometimes we spend so much time studying that we forget how to make life wonderful. In doing so, we lose the real purpose of life —to be a valuable and happy person. To enjoy just how great it is to be alive, we have to put down our books and pens and look around us. Students, take some exercise to improve your health, talk with your parents and friends for understanding and walk around outside to refresh (振作) your body and mind.

Going out and enjoying the beautiful countryside often helps our creativity in our work. Chinese craftsman, Lu Ban created a saw to help woodworkers. But if he hadn't walked outside, he would not have been inspired by a kind of toothed (锯齿状的) grass. We could also suppose if Newton hadn't rested under that apple tree, then he wouldn't have been hit by an apple, and his classic (经典的) theories would not have come out.

Going out is not only a break from hard work, but a chance to add to life experience. So come on, give your brain a good rest. Step out of the books and get your bag ready for an autumn outing. We are sure you will get much more than knowledge from the exciting journey.

When Dekalb Walcott III was just 8 years old, his father, a Chicago fire chief, let him tag along on a call. Dekalb says a lot of kids idolized basketball player Michael Jordan when he was growing up in Chicago in the 1990s. Not him.

"I wanted to be like Dekalb Walcott Jr.," he says of his father.

So when his dad asked if he wanted to go on that call with him when he was 8, Dekalb was excited. "I'm jumping up and down, saying, 'Mom, can I go? Can I go?'"

The experience changed Dekalb's life, he tells his dad on a visit to Story Corps. "My eyes got big from the moment the alarm went off." the younger Dekalb says. "This is the life that I want to live someday."

Now 27, the younger Dekalb is living that life. He became a firefighter at 21 and went to work alongside his dad at the Chicago Fire Department. Before his father retired, the pair even went out on a call together—father supervising(监督)son.

"You know, it's everything for me to watch you grow," his father says. But he also recalls worrying about one particular fire that his son faced."

I received a phone call that night. And they said, 'Well, your son was at this fire.' I said, 'OK, which way is this conversation going to go? '" Dekalb Walcott Jr. recalls.

"And they said, 'But he's OK. And he put it out all by himself. Everybody here was proud of him.'

And the word went around, 'Who was out there managing that fire? Oh, that's Walcott! That's Walcott up there!' So, you know, moments like that, it's heaven on Earth for a dad."

Dekalb Walcott Jr. retired in 2009. The younger Dekalb says he's proud of being a second-generation firefighter. "You know, it makes me look forward to fatherhood as well, because I'm definitely looking forward to passing that torch down to my son."

23、Ways to Protect Yourself from Hackers Online

An increase in cyber-attacks(网络攻击) and identity theft make the Internet seem like a scary place these days. This raises a question: How can individuals protect or make it more difficult for hackers to access their information? 【1】

Make your password harder to hack

Hard passwords include upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. 【2】 They should also not spell out words easy for hackers to find, like your pet’s name or the name of a family member.

【3】

A very common mistake made by users is to create one hard password, but then never change it. Remembering a long list of complicated passwords can be difficult. But no password is unbreakable. Hackers are better able hack multiple accounts if those accounts all have the same password. A password management service, like Dashlane or Password Box, can help you keep track of hard passwords. These services permit users to easily store and secure their passwords.

Clear your browser history

This goes for all the devices you use in a day – your home computer, your work computer, or your friend’s iPad. Internet browsers like Firefox or Chrome keep track of where you’ve been and what you’ve done online. 【4】 Information about what you sent from or saved on your computer can be kept for days or weeks. It is very easy for anyone who sees that information to steal a detailed record of your online activities.

Do not use free Wi-Fi

【5】 Often, a user does not need a password to connect to these wireless networks. These services might be useful, but they’re also an easy way for hackers to access everything on your device. Unless you really need it, it is best not to use it.

A.Change your password regularly

B.They keep records of every site you visited.

C.They should be at least eight characters in length.

D.For many people, not using a public computer can be difficult.

E.They can also spread viruses easily across computers and networks.

F.Here are some tips that can help you protect against cyber-attacks.

G.An increasing number of public places now offer free wireless access to the Internet.

24、Around the world, honeybee groups are dying in huge numbers: About one-third of nests collapse each year. For bees and the plants they pollinate (授粉) as well as for beekeepers, farmers, honey lovers and everyone else who appreciates this marvelous social insect this is a catastrophe.

Honeybee collapse has been particularly worrying because there is no one cause, but rather a thousand little cuts. The main elements include the mixed impact of pesticides (杀虫剂) applied to fields, as well as pesticides applied directly into nets to control bugs, pests and diseases; nutritional shortages caused by vast acreages of single-crop fields that lack diverse flowering plants; and commercial beekeeping itself, which destroys groups by moving most bees around the country multiple times each year to pollinate crops.

The real issue, though, is not the volume of problems, but the interactions among them. Here we find a major lesson from the bees that we ignore at our risk: the concept of synergy (协同作用), where one plus one equals three, or four, or more. A typical honeybee colony contains remains from more than 120 pesticides. Alone, each represents a benign dose (良性剂量). But together they form a poisonous soup of chemicals whose interplay (相互作用) can greatly reduce the effectiveness of bees’ immune systems, making them easier to suffer from diseases.

Observing the death of honeybees should warn us that our own well-being might be similarly threatened, and the widespread collapse of so many groups presents a clear message: We must demand that our regulatory authorities require studies on how exposure to low dosages of combined chemicals may affect human health before approving compounds.

Bees also provide some clues to how we may build a more collaborative relationship with the services that ecosystems can provide. Bees could offer some of the pollination service needed for agriculture. People discovered that crop harvests, and thus profits, are maximized if some cropland are left uncultivated for bees. Meanwhile a variety of wild plants means a healthier, more diverse bee population, which will then move to the planted fields next door in larger and more active numbers.

【1Which of the following is NOT the cause that leads to bees dying?

A. Lack of nutrition from enough diverse flowering plants.

B. The pests and diseases of the bees.

C. The beekeepers’ destroying without intention

D. The pesticides applied to crops.

【2】By saying “one plus one equals three, or four, or more” in Paragraph 3, the author means that ____.

A. bees united mean they are much more powerful

B. bees united mean they are much more poisonous

C. pesticides mixed mean they are much more poisonous.

D. pesticides mixed mean they are much more effective.

【3】The lesson people can learn from bees dying is that ____________.

A. medicine is as powerful as pesticide

B. our health might be threatened by pesticides

C. we should protect bees by reducing the usage of pesticides

D. medicine may be harmful to us when used together

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A. Keeping a balance with nature is important

B. More plants mean more and healthier bees.

C. Bees are very important to agriculture.

D. Bees can bring in good higher profits to farmers
