二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Be Slightly Funnier

How would you feel if a colleague suggested you take a comedy class to improve your sense of humor? I felt embarrassed.

At home that evening, I asked my other half whether he thinks I'm funny. 【1】 . "Of course you are," they all ensured me. What else could they say? And anyway, I'd already made up my mind. Some people just aren't funny, and I'm one of them.

Yet, according to Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas-authors of the book Humor, Seriously and experts on the subject, humor is not something you are born with or without. 【2】 . What's more, finding our funny sides makes us appear more competent and confident, strengthens relationships, unlocks creativity and makes us more likable. It helps in any life situation.

This undoubtedly explains why future masters of the universe are eagerly signing up for the humor course Aaker and Bagdonas teach at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. They agreed to teach me how to find my funny bones, too.

【3】 . As you would hope, they are very amusing. They begin by sending me a questionnaire about what I find funny, what I don't, and how I attempt to make others laugh. The results will apparently reveal my humor type.

In our first call, Aaker, a social psychologist (心理学家), explains that many of us leave humor behind when we arrive at adulthood: A four-year-old laughs up to 300 times a day. 【4】 .

Next, we discuss the common misunderstandings that stop many of us in our comedy tracks. The first, Aaker says, is the belief that humor has no place in certain situations, especially at work. 【5】 . However, 98 percent of top executives say they prefer employees with a sense of humor and 84 percent of bosses believe those employees do better work.

A.Rather, it's a muscle you can strengthen

B.Then there is the idea that it is too risky

C.We worry about not being taken seriously

D.My first interaction with the pair is over e-mail

E.Then I texted my best friend and my sister-in-law

F.But a 40-year-old takes ten weeks to laugh as much

G.It is far more important to show you have a sense of humor

22、I often hear some of you saying, "I don't care what other people think! I do whatever I want!" There is a strong wish for independence in adolescence(青春期)and you say you only care about your own opinion. But be honest—don't you care about what certain people think? Most teenagers have a circle of people who can influence them. They care very much about what this circle of people think, especially about them.

Most teenagers want to be independent, but they don't want to be alone. They don't want to stand out, away from the crowd. They want to have connection to other people, especially other teenagers.

During adolescence, friendships with other teens become very important. They care about what other teenagers think because they want to be accepted and they are afraid of what other people think. Fear makes them care.

Some teenagers are leaders and some are followers. You might think that teenage leaders don't care what other people think, but that is not true. After all, a leader really isn't a leader unless other people follow. If leaders don't care about what followers think, those followers may leave and follow someone else, Followers care about what the leader thinks because they want to be part of the group.

There is a famous playwright(剧作家)named William Shakespeare. In one of his plays, Hamlet, the character Hamlet said, "To thine own self be true." In other words, whatever you do, always be true to yourself. Sure, teenagers can care about what other people think of them, but the most important thing is what they think of themselves. This is one of the most important tasks that teenagers should have.

【1】What do we know about teenagers from the text?

A.They value friendship.

B.They have difficulty making friends.

D.They keep themselves away from others.

【2】What can we know from paragraph 4?

A.Teenagers prefer to be leaders.

【3】What suggestion does the author give to teens?

A.Think of others around you.

B.Make friends whenever possible.

C.Do what you think is right.

D.Go easy on yourself and others.

【4】Why does the author mention William Shakespeare?

A.To introduce his play Hamlet.

B.To state he is a famous playwright.

C.To add some humor to the article.

D.To help illustrate the author's view.

【5】What is the best title for the text?

A.Teenagers: follow your heart

B.Teenagers: believe in yourself

C.Why do teenagers want to be independent?

23、   When it comes to being fit and healthy, we're often reminded to aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. This can be a frustrating target to achieve, especially when we're busy with work and other commitments.

The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called "Manpo---kei, which translates to "10,000 steps meter". This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. It's even included in daily activity targets by popular smart-watches, such as Fitbit.

In ancient Rome, distances were actually measured by counting steps. In fact, the word "mile" originated from the Latin phrase mila passum, which means about 2,000 steps. It's suggested the average person walks about 100 steps per minute---which would mean it would take a little under 20 minutes for the average person to walk a mile. So in order for someone to reach the 10,000---step goal, they would need to walk about five miles a day, nearly two hours of activity.

Researchers have investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. The fact that some studies have shown this step target improves heart health, mental health, and even lowers diabetes risk, may, to some extent, explain why we have stuck with this arbitrary number.

But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it's uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it's one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.

【1】From which does taking 10,000 steps for walkers initially come?

A.Ancient Rome.

B.Fitbit.

C.Mila passum.

D.Manpo-kei.

【2】How many steps will you take on average to cover two miles?

A.2000.

B.2700.

C.4000.

D.7500.

【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The more you walk daily, the healthier you will be.

B.7,500 steps or so a day is the ideal number for women.

C.To be healthy you'd better walk ten thousand steps.

D.The number of effective steps is the same for men and women.

【4】What does the underlined phrase "leveling off" refer to?

A.Remaining steady.

B.Increasing greatly.

C.Decreasing sharply.

D.Disappearing suddenly.

24、Criticism is judgment. A critic is a judge. A judge must study and think about the material presented to him, accept it, correct it or reject it after thinking over what he has read, watched or heard.

Another word for criticism is appreciation. When I criticize or appreciate some object or another, I look for its good points and bad points. In reading any printed or written matter, I always have a pencil in hand and put any comments in the book or on a separate paper. In other words, I always talk back to the writer.

That sort of critical reading might well be called creative reading because I am thinking along with the author, asking him questions, seeing whether he answers the questions and how well he answers them. I mark the good passages to store them in my memory piece of writing; where, how and why could or should I improve upon it?

You might think that doing what I suggested is work. Yes, it is, but the work is a pleasure because I can feel my brain expanding, my emotion reacting and my way of living change.

Reading exercises is a great influence on a person. If pictures, still or moving, accompany the reading, the memory will retain the material for a long time.

Just as evil books can corrupt, so also can good books gradually work a change on a corrupt person.

Let's get back to the beneficial effects of thinking while reading. It helps us to enlarge our minds. We understand more about the universe, its people and many of its wonders. We learn to think and observe in new ways. We certainly do get a feeling for the language we are reading. All good writers in any language have been readers who read critically and continuously.

【1】According to the writer, creative reading is ________.

A.raising questions and answering them for the author

B.reading and giving comments on the materials one has read

C.thinking in the same line with the author

D.storing up facts in one's memory
