21、It may sound a bit Dr. Doolittle,” but it turns out kangaroos can communicate with humans. Researchers found that kangaroos communicated with humans “on purpose”--a behavior that was thought to only belong to domesticated(驯养的)animals, like dogs, horses or goats.

Experts from London's University of Roehampton and the University of Sydney set up a task. This task was known as “the unsolvable problem task” During the task, they presented kangaroos with food trapped inside a plastic container.

After trying, and failing, to open the boxes, the kangaroos turned their gaze(注视)on a nearby human - and sometimes even pushed or scratched(抓) them to ask for help, researchers said.

“Their gaze was pretty powerful, co-author Alexandra Green said. "We've previously thought only domesticated animals try to ask for help with a problem. But kangaroos do it too. If they can't open the box, they look at the human and back to the container. Some of them use their nose to push the human and some get close to the human and start scratching at him asking for assistance.,,

Based on these new findings, the team believe kangaroos - considered social animals, like dogs and goats --may be able to change their behavior to interact with humans.

“Through this study, we are able to see that communication between animals can be learnt and that the behaviour of gazing at humans to get food is not related to domestication lead author Alan McElligott said.

Indeed, kangaroos showed a very similar pattern of behaviour we have seen in dogs, horses and even goats when put to the same test,“ McElligott added.

22、China’ s booming coffee business has made it the second most important market for global giant Starbucks, behind only its home U.S. market. But it’s also providing fertile ground for new and innovative (勇于创新的) players catering to local preferences. One of the latest in that group is Shanghai-based chain Manner Coffee, which, together with other similar homegrown names, are reshaping the country’s coffee drinking landscape.

This year alone has seen 16 financing events in China’s coffee sector, with more than 5 billion yuan ($784 million ) pouring into the space. Even the infamous Luckin Coffee, which was removed from the Nasdaq last year after being exposed for massive fraud (欺诈), is once again attracting investors’ attention.

Dubbed (被称作) as a seller of “street coffee” priced between 10 yuan and 20 yuan per cup, equal to $ 3 or less, Manner quickly became popular among young office workers for its less expensive price and high quality.

Manner and the other up-and-comers are thriving on a China coffee market that is growing at a healthy 15% per year. After expanding slowly in its first three years, Manner’s store count rose from just eight at the end of 2018 to 194 this year, with 165 in Shanghai and the rest in Beijng, Shenzhen, Chengdu and other cities. It plans to keep expanding outside of Shanghai by opening up to 100 new stores a year.

Meanwhile, Starbucks reported its same-store sales in the Chinese market grew by just 19% in its financial third quarter, down sharply from 91% growth in the previous quarter, due in part to weak year-ago figures from stores affected during early stages of the pandemic in 2020. The company forecast that growth would slow further still in the following years.

23、   Without reducing fun, anyone can host a birthday party on a tight budget. San Francisco, the East Bay, and South Bay in particular, are full of only-found-here locations that can make the day special. A day at Great America, tour of SBC Park and a baseball game or a private party at the Oakland Chabot Space and Science Center are experiences unique to Bay Area families.

These parties are the most fun because a budget forces you to be creative with what you’ve got. The key here is to find a spot that is free or cheap.

A few places to consider are public parks--find ones with age-appropriate play structures that are relatively safe. In the summer, locate a local pool with plenty of lifeguards and have those handy parents come along as guests. And as you plan, consider your guests’abilities and comfort levels. If your child loves to ice-skate but her friends hate it. maybe she can choose a different activity or mainly choose to do this as a family birthday outing.

Zoos are relatively inexpensive as well. The San Francisco Zoo charges $11 per adult and $5 for each child, ages 3-11, and $8 for 12-17. The Oakland Zoo admits adults for S9 and kids $5. 50 for ages 2-14.

Museums and aquariums (水族馆) often have a free admission day. You can take kids to the Steinhart Aquarium for free the first Wednesday of each month. The same goes for the Exploratorium, also in San Francisco. The deYoung Museum is also free for all visitors the first Tuesday of every month. It also charges all kids nothing, who are 12 and under daily. Organize your free museum days during school breaks or holidays, and you’ll save a lot.

1What can you do at the Oakland Chabot Space and Science Center?

A.Hold a party. B.Admire Great America.

C.Watch a national baseball game. D.Learn about the history of San Francisco.

2Which of the following is always free for a kid under 12?

A.The Oakland Zoo. B.The Exploratorium.

C.The San Francisco Zoo. D.The deYoung Museum.

3What type of writing is this text?

A.A budget report. B.A travel guide.

C.A book review. D.A museum brochure.

24、I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one – it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.

Nike

In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $ 35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.

McDonald’s

The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the archshaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.

Apple

There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓)of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.

Mercedes Benz

The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.

Adidas

The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.

【1】What does Nike’s logo stand for?

A.The goddess of victory.

B.The source of inspiration for soldiers.

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

25、   When 17-year-old Quattro Musser hangs out with friends, they don't drink beer or cruise around in cars with their dates. _____, they stick to G-rated activities such as rock- climbing or talking about books.

They are in good company, according to a new study showing that teenagers are increasingly delaying activities that had long been seen as rites of passage into _____. The study, published Tuesday in the journal Child Development, found that the percentage of adolescents in the U. S. who have a driver's license, who have tried alcohol, who date, and who work for pay has plummeted since 1976, with the most precipitous (急剧的) _____ in the past decade. The declines appeared across race, geographic, and socioeconomic lines, and in rural, urban, and suburban areas.

To be sure, more than half of teens still engage in these activities, but the _____ have slimmed considerably. Teens have also reported a steady decline in sexual activity in recent decades, as the portion of high school students who have had sex fell from 54 percent in 1991 to 41 percent in 2015, according to Centers for Disease Control statistics. u People say, 'Oh, it's because teenagers are more responsible, or more lazy, or more boring, ' but they're _____ the larger trend," said Jean Twenge, lead author of the study, which drew on seven large time-lag surveys of Americans. Rather, she said, kids may be less _____ in activities such as dating, driving or getting jobs because in today's society, they no longer need to.

According to an evolutionary psychology theory that a person's "life strategy" slows down or speeds up depending on his or her _____, exposure to a "harsh and unpredictable" environment leads to faster development, while a more resource-rich and secure environment has the _____ effect, the study said. In the first _____, "You'd have a lot of kids and be in survival mode, start having kids young, expect your kids will have kids young, and expect that there will be more _____and fewer resources, " said Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University who is the author of "iGen Why Today's Super- Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy-and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood."

In that model a teenage boy might be thinking more _____ about marriage, and driving a car and working for pay would be important for “ establishing mate value based on procurement of resources," the study said. But America is shifting more toward the _____model, and the change is apparent across the socioeconomic spectrum, Twenge said. uEven in families whose parents didn't have a college education. . . families are smaller, and the idea that children need to be carefully  _____ has really sunk in. ‘‘ The _____of 41 adult activities' could not be attributed to more homework or extracurricular activities, the study said, noting that teens today spend fewer hours on homework and the same amount of time on extracurriculars as they did in the 1990 s (with the exception of community service, which has risen slightly). Nor could the use of smartphones and the Internet be entirely the _____, the report said, since the decline began before they were widely available. If the delay is to make room for creative exploration and forming better social and emotional connections, it is a good thing, he said.
