About it

In 1983, Simon’s Rock of Bard College began offering a three-week writing workshop for high school students. It is now part of the National Writing and Thinking Network, the largest association of summer writing programs and camps in the country. Former participants have gone on to colleges like Amherst, Harvard, Kenyon, Princeton and Yale.

About its staff

The staff are skilled teachers and writers with a special interest in the theory and practice of the nationally recognized Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking. They are selected for the Simon’s Rock workshop camp because of their record of teaching excellence and their familiarity with the needs and abilities of younger writers.

22、   We believe that the more you get out into the world, the better place it'll be. But getting out into the world shouldn't mean leaving a footprint.1 By following those, your destination will be better after you leave.

Don't hold back. The best way to know a new place is to talk to the local people. When you're staying with them, tell them about who you are, why you're there, what you want to see and what you love about bringing yourself to new place.2

Dive right in. What's the point in travelling outside of your home country if you don't also get out of your comfort zone? 3 If you want to sky dive and just have had that chance, do it. You'll go home with a story, and will leave locals with a story of their own of a brave traveler who conquered their fears.

Do your homework. 4 Try to learn more about local customs, traditions and manners so that you'll arrive well equipped to enjoy your time and communicate with locals without any bad impressions.

5 We all travel for different reasons. Don’t forget what drove you to hit the road. Sometimes, the best memories happen when you least expect them. If you open yourself up to the world, you’ll never know how the world will change you!

23、Most teenagers are still trying to find their passion and purpose in life. However, not Gitanjali Rao. The 15-year-old sophomore at STEM School Highlands Ranch has been coming up with innovative solutions lo worldwide problems since she was ten. It is, therefore, not surprising that the youngster was selected from 5,000 equally impressive nominees—aged 8 to 16—for TIME Magazine’s first-ever “Kid of the Year.”

The young girl, who knew she wanted to bring change and positivity to her community since 3rd grade, was just ten years old when she heard about the lead-tainted (含铅的) water in Flint, Michigan, in 2015. After spending two months researching how the area’s drinking water became polluted, Rao began designing a device called Tethys, which attaches to a cellphone and informs the resident via an APP if their drinking water contains traces of the harmful metal. The prototype (模型) earned her the Young Scientist Challenge Award in 2017. A start-up entrepreneur is working with scientists and medical professionals to test Tethys’ potential and hopes the device will be ready for commercial use by 2022.

In 2019, Rao took on another social issue—opioid addiction. The app she designed won the Pillar Prize at the Innovation Student Challenge, which helps to catch drug addiction in young adults before it’s too late. Rao said. “I wanted to come up with a way to diagnose such addiction at an early stage so you can take action earlier.”

More recently, the teenager has created another inspiring app. “I stared to hard-code (编写硬编码) in some words that could be considered bullying, and then the computer search engine took those words and identified words that are similar. You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able to pick it up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the option to edit it or send it the way it is.” Rao told editor Angelina in an interview. “The goal is not to punish. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.”

【1】How is Gitanjali Rao different from most teenagers?

A.She is trying to find her passion and purpose in life.

B.She is a sophomore at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

C.She has put forward creative answers to worldwide problems.

D.She applied to be “Kid of the Year” of TIME Magazine.

【2】What can we learn about Tethys from Paragraph 2?

A.It is a device for residents to research the drinking water.

B.The traces of the harmful metal will be presented on it.

C.Its phone APP tells users whether the water is polluted.

D.A start-up entrepreneur has put Tethys on the market.

【3】What does the underlined expression “opioid addiction” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Internet addiction.

B.Drug abuse.

C.App innovation.

D.Health diagnosis.

【4】What is the goal of the app against cyberbullying?

A.To give a punishment for bullying.

B.To guide users to send proper words.

C.To withdraw bullying messages.

D.To help find more accurate expressions.

24、In the 1940s, young male Royal Air Force pilots held needles as they waited for their next mission. Wartime pilots suffered a lot and knitting helped rebuild dexterity (灵巧) in wounded arms while also helping to settle wounded minds.

Today, millions of people around the world employ the same technique. “I know that if I haven’t knitted for a few days, I really miss it. It’s like meditation.” says Janine Smith, who owns a store in Sydney selling supplies for knitting.

Research supports Smith’s statement. Physiotherapist Betsan Corkhill and occupational therapist Jill Riley were part of a team from Cardiff University that, ten years ago, surveyed more than 3,500 knitters and found that the more frequently people knitted, the calmer and happier they felt.

Or as Jannie Smith puts it, “That rhythm of making stitch after stitch is like deep breathing. It’s a flow where you don’t have to stress about it, you’ve got the rhythm happening.”

“Flow” is a concept first named by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. As he wrote in his book, “The best moments in our lives are neither the passive nor relaxing times. The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”

The Cardiff research team found that many respondents described feeling calmer and in a better mood after knitting, and the majority of respondents who suffered from depression “perceived that knitting made them feel happier.” For respondents who suffered from chronic pain, almost nine out of ten said that knitting gave them a sense of accomplishment and a means of coping with their pain.

Interestingly, more than half of those surveyed said that knitting pushed them to develop other skills, like building furniture. Because knitting is so accessible — at its heart it’s two sticks and one stitch — it helps people build confidence in their abilities. After all, if you make a mistake, you can just pull it all out and start again.

【1】Why does the author mention young male Royal Air Force pilots in paragraph 1?

A.To give an example of a knitter.

B.To show the heavy burden on pilots.

C.To demonstrate the technique of pilots.

D.To introduce the healing effect of knitting.

【2】Which can be called as the best moment according to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi?

A.Watching TV together with friends.

B.Taking physical exams.

C.Playing chess with a great opponent.

D.Reading funny comic books.

【3】According to a research of Cardiff University, which statement about knitting is true?

A.It motivates people to stretch their bodies.

B.It enables people to build furniture.

C.It helps people to get rid of chronic pain.

D.It allows people to build confidence to learn other skills.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.Active Hands, Calm Minds

B.Healthier Attitude, Longer Life

C.Easy Knitting, Skill Building

D.Mind Calming, Flow Finding
