21、Consumers in the US spend more money when doing the grocery shopping online, but spend less on sweets and desserts than when they shop in physical stores.
In recent years, online grocery shopping has grown massively. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount consumers spend through online shopping has more than doubled in the US.
Laura Zatz at Harvard University and her colleagues have looked at how people’s habits change when they’re spending in-store compared with shopping online. They hired 137 participants, who were regular consumers of two supermarkets in the US state of Maine. Each participant was the key shopper for their household, and they also had experience in shopping both online and in-store.
The researchers studied each participant for a total of 44 weeks and tracked what items they purchased. They collected data from a total of 5,573 transactions (交易), 1,062 of which were made online and 4,511 in-store. “They purchased more items when shopping online, both in terms of overall number of items but also a greater variety of unique items,’ says Zatz. On average, participants spent 44% more per transaction when shopping online than in-store.
The results show that people spent more money on sweets and desserts when shopping in-store, spending on average $ 2. 50 more per transaction. However, there was no difference in spending on sugary drinks.
It seems that in-store shopping attracts shoppers to unhealthier food choices. “When you’re shopping in-store, you’re facing all sorts of stimuli (刺激) that could make you more willing to buy unhealthy food groups when you might not have otherwise planned to,” says Zatz. Unhealthy food choices are often placed in supermarkets at the end of aisles(走道) and at checkouts, where you can easily see, touch or even smell the food.
“The findings could help consumers reflect on how to avoid unhealthy food purchasing choices, especially as complex marketing is coming online,” says Zatz. “Besides offering seemingly appealing discounts, online stores may follow physical stores in many ways. You can never be too careful when shopping online.”

22、 Harriet Lane and her friend Miss Brown stood in the doorway of the State Dining Room as the florists (花商) carried their large flower arrangements. “I’m sure the prince will be very impressed,” Harriet said. “This is my favorite part. To be honest, I love all the parts of being Uncle’s hostess at the White House. I love planning the dinners and checking the guest rooms. I love showing visitors the gardens.”
Miss Brown smiled. She had taken care of Harriet since she lived with her uncle James. Harriet was only nine when her parents died. Uncle James was often away from home. He was not married, so he asked Miss Brown to be his housekeeper caring for Harriet when he was away. As Harriet grew up, she and Miss Brown became friends.
When Uncle James became the government’s representative(代表) in England, Harriet and Miss Brown traveled there as well. Harriet became a friend of Queen Victoria and her family. Now that Uncle James was president, Harriet and Miss Brown were with him in Washington, D.C. Harriet did many of the jobs that a First Lady would do, even though she was the president’s niece. This was to be the most important party she had planned. Queen Victoria’s son, the Prince of Wales, was visiting the United States. He was coming to dinner at the White House tonight!
While living in Washington, Harriet did more than just plan parties. She worked hard to improve the lives of Native Americans all across the country. She also believed that there should be a national art museum in Washington.
Harriet’s Uncle James was president from 1857 to 1861. When his term of office was over, they returned to their home in Pennsylvania. After Harriet married Henry, they collected artwork all over the world. Later, she gave her collection to the National Gallery(展览馆) of Art in Washington, D.C. Harriet also started the first children’s hospital in the United States.
Harriet Lane is famous for being the only First Lady who was not married to a president. She did much more for our country than plan parties!

23、Los Angeles native Randall Bartlett sat under the rooftop of a traditional Chinese scholar’s studio, occasionally turning a page of his book. The scene was in the reopened Liu Fang Yuan garden at the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. For him, the garden brings to life the Chinese philosophies he learned from books.
Phillip E. Bloom, director of the Center for East Asian Garden Studies, said the idea for Liu Fang Yuan goes back to the 1980s with the initial aim of creating a collection of Chinese plants, but after research, they realized plants alone were not sufficient to demonstrate the essence of a Chinese garden. Eventually, it was decided to model a garden on 16th and 17th century scholarly retreats(隐居处)in Suzhou.
The decision was made partly due to the fame of Suzhou classical gardens, but also because similarities were found between the Huntington and Suzhou gardens. Bloom said that Henry Huntington, founder of the Huntington Library, was a successful US businessman who used his fortune to collect rare books, artworks and to create gardens. “Many Suzhou gardens were also created by rich people who tried to pursue a scholarly lifestyle,” he added.
To preserve the character of the Suzhou gardens, the Huntington Library sought help from Suzhou, giving rise to collaboration between US and Chinese architects, contractors and designers. In all stages of construction, artisans(工匠)from Suzhou came to work on details of the venue.
After three years of expansion from 2018 to 2020, Liu Fang Yuan reopened to the public with 4.6 hectares of new landscape, making it one of the largest classical-style Chinese gardens in the world. The additions include courtyards displaying penjing, a scholar’s studio, a pavilion(亭子)situated at the garden’s highest point, etc.
Now, it is meaningful to see how people from local communities interact with the garden. “A lot of volunteers come to different lectures and exhibitions about Chinese culture hat we hold regularly,” Bloom said. By exposing its visitors to arts and literature, Liu Fang uan goes beyond international boundaries and bridges the cultural gaps between the two ountries.
【1】What do we know about Liu Fang Yuan?
A.It used to be a scholarly retreat in Suzhou.
B.It was constructed by Suzhou artisans alone.

D.It promotes cultural exchanges between America and China.

A.The introduction to the founder.
B.The fame of Suzhou classical gardens.
C.The features of a scholarly lifestyle.
D.The reasons for modeling a Suzhou garden.
【3】What does the underlined word “collaboration” in paragraph 4 mean?

B.cooperation
C.inspiration
D.contradiction
【4】Why did Bloom mention local people’s interactions with the garden?

B.To detail its architectural features.
C.To promote its diverse activities.

24、If You've Got an Interview,Get Your Etiquette (礼仪) Right
INTERVIEWING for a job is like going battle. You need to be prepared. Just being polite may not be enough. 【1】 Here, 21st Century identifies the traps and shows you how to deal with them.
【2】 Even though your interviewer should already have one, they may still ask for a copy to test your preparedness.
Avoid arriving too early. Of course, it's not good to be late, but if you arrive too early you could give the impression that you cannot follow directions. Also, your early arrival could upset the interviewer's schedule, if he or she still has things to accomplish before meeting with you. 【3】 . You can spend time in a cafe or a shopping mall if your taxi or bus gets you there too early.
Hold your tongue in the waiting room. 【4】 Doing so could cause you to lose focus. Also, remember that your behaviour and conversation may be monitored by office staff. So, if another interviewee tries to talk with you, smile and ask for a few minutes to yourself.
When you accept a cup of water or tea, be careful that you do not spill it—on yourself or the floor. 【5】 Otherwise, you could accidentally spill the drink and cause yourself to feel embarrassed.
And, finally, after you get back home, it's important to take time to write a short letter or e-mail expressing thanks. Keep it brief. Do not ask about the interviewer's impression of you, or about your chances of getting hired. This might make you sound like a pushy (有企图心的) person!
A.Being on time is always acceptable.
B.Always bring an extra copy of your resume with you
C.You'd better not share your opinion with your candidates.
D.It's OK to take a few sips (小口喝), but set it aside if you are not thirsty.
E.Avoid chatting with other interviewees, even if you are friends.
F.It's best to arrive 10 or 15 minutes before the interview is scheduled to begin.
G.A few minor mistakes in etiquette can upset your chances of making a good impression.
